Passover: Foreshadowing Jesus

By GAIL WIDMOYER The celebration of Passover is first mentioned in the Bible when Moses and his people were part of the mass Exodus from Egypt to the Promised Land. Since Christ’s coming, Passover has become a part of the Easter celebration and is the New Testament fulfillment of the Old Testament prophecy. God warned Moses and his people that on a designated day, “I will pass through the land of Egypt that night, and I will smite all the first-born in the land of Egypt, both man and beast; and on all the gods of Egypt I will execute judgments...” Exodus 12:12 RSV Each Jewish family was ordered to find a year old, male lamb without marks and gather together in the evening to kill the animals. God further instructed His people to apply fresh blood to the doorposts and lintel of the houses where they would eat their feast. The feast was to be eaten hastily, and any of the meat left was to be burned. No one was allowed out of his home until the following morning. The blood on the notified God which homes belonged to His people so when “ . . . I see the blood, I will pass over you, and no plague shall fall upon you to destroy you, when I smite the land of Egypt.” Exodus 12:13 RSV Therefore, Passover in this sense became a commemoration of the deliverance of God’s people from the Angel of Death. The celebration and practices separated God’s people from the Egyptians. In the New Testament, not only does Jesus celebrate the Passover with his disciples, but the entire Last Supper is a fulfullment of the Old Testament prophecy.

In the Old Testament Passover account, the lamb can be seen as a foreshadowing for Jesus Christ. Deliverance from plagues and death depended (hi the lamb just as deliverance from sin and death for Christians is dependent on Jesus. The lamb’s slaying refers to Christ’s sufferings and death and the blood on the doorposts is Christ’s blood shed for His people. To further the comparison, Moses and his people were delivered from a sinful country by God and celebrated the Passover throughout their history. In a similar manner, the Christians were delivered from a hostile life through Jesus and continue to celebrate the Passover as part of their Christian beliefs. Christ’s Celebration Christ entered the city of His death on the same day the Passover lamb was to be sacrificed. Symbolically, Christ substituted bread for his body and wine for His blood, all on the day of the feast of the lamb. As Christ and his disciples partook of the Passover, also known as the Last Supper, He changed the Old Testament festival into His sacrament. This is not to say Christ has substituted His celebration for that of Moses, instead, Christ is fulfilling the practices of the Old Testament, “Think not that I have come to abolish the law and the prophets; I have come not to abolish them but to fulfil them. For truly, I say to you, till heaven and earth pass away, not an iota, not a dot, will pass from the law until all is accomplished. ’ ’ Matthew 5:17-18 RSV

TWO JOYFUL CELEBRATIONS BEGAN WITH A SACRED FEAST

tenet of our faith portrays The proper way we should proceed To celebrate two holidays; Because, according to our creed, The Savior died on Calvary And then was risen from the dead; Or Moses set the Hebrews free, For which they ate unleavened bread. Your House of Worship will reveal. Whatever you may celebrate, The reason for that sacred meal Which Christ and His disciples ate. And so there is, in either case, A joyful message to be found, That history will not erase; For everyone the world around. —Gloria Nowak

Alone he waits, quiet and still — ready to offer His life for the lives of men. And yet, even in the face of death. He doesn't make a sound. The Bible says, “Worthy is the Lamb who was slain to receive power . . . and wealth .. . and wisdom .. and strength .. . and honor . . and glory . . . and blessing." Revelation 5:11-12 Along with the choir members, Dick and Carol Fehnel, and Carl Shearer will participate in the cantata. The public is invited to attend the dramatic presentation. To show film on March 30 t)n Sunday, March 20, at 7 p.m., a film entitled “One Who Was There” will be presented at the Wawasee Lakeside Chapel as part of the community Lenten services.
