Drug awareness program presented in area schools

Defective Sergeant Bill Essex will be presenting a drug attitude awareness program to Lakeland Community Schools on March 24 and 25. On Thursday, March 24, Essex will present a program at Wawasee High School from 10 a.m. until 12 noon; and on Friday, March 25, the program will be presented at North Webster Junior High from 8 a.m. until 9:15 a.m.; at Syracuse Junior High from 10 a.m. until 11:15 a.m.; and at Milford Junior High from 1:30 p.m. until 2:45 p.m. Area adults are encouraged to attend any of the listed programs. Essex attended Indiana University prior to becoming an Indiana State Police Tropper where he served seven years as a uniformed trooper and 64 years as an undercover investigator. He has been educated in and has developed an expertise in drug investigations and has also been educated in homicide and sexcrime investigations. Approximately 14 years ago, Essex developed an educational program for adults that deals with society’s attitudes about the use and abuse of drugs. The above mentioned program also

Heidi Musser - spelling champ

On Tuesday, March 1, 20 finalists from the fifth through the eighth grades participated in the Syracuse School Spelling Bee. After one hour of continuous spelling, eighth grader, Heidi Musser, was the school’s champion speller. Heidi is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Bill Musser and ho* language teacher is Russell Sonafrank, 11. Heidi earned the honor of representing Syracuse in the seventh and eighth grade County Spelling Bee Championship at Warsaw on March 21 at 7 p.m. Finishing second to Heidi was seventh grader Beverly Begley, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Richard Davis. Mr. Sonafrank is also her language teacher. Winning in the fifth and sixth grade division was Shawn Kaiser, fifth grade daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Steven Kaiser. March 21 date for F FA slave auction Wawasee’s FFA chapter has been working on the annual slave auction slated for March 21. Members will be auctioned off to do field work, yard work or general labor for interested persons in the community. The auction will he held in the cafeteria annex.

"Heaven Can Wait" premiers this week end

Wawasee senior Sean Shanahan will play the lead role in the Wawasee High School production of “Heaven Can Wait” to be presented this Friday and Saturday night in the Wawasee Auditorium. Hie play begins at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are available at the door or by contacting Terry Iden at the high school. “Heaven Can Wait” is a production by the high school’s drama club and is based on the Broadway play twice made into a movie. The most remit motion picture of “Heaven Can Wait” starred Warren Beatty. David Baumgartner is directing the play which involves a boxer named Joe Pendleton who is summoned to the pearly gates by mistake when he survives a plane crash. Shanahan plays Pendleton with Darci Gilbert as Ms. Jordan. Pendleton (Shanahan) is sent back to earth to inhabit another

Essex served as an advisor to the president’s White House Conference on Substance Abuse as well as the governor’s committee on Children and Youth. With the cooperation of the Indiana State Police superintendent, Essex has presented these newly developed programs to more than 120,000 residents of the state.

Supporting roles are played by Jon Dixon as 7013; Cindy Knotts as Julia Farnsworth; Jeff Impey as Tony Abbott; Tamy Noel as Bette Logan; Bill Dixon as Max Levene; and Rick Pena as Lefty. Others in the cast include: Therrian Hinesley as Mrs. Ames, Cathy Cobbum as the nurse, Lisa Pedersen as Susie, Angie Smith as Ann, Mark Walker as Inspector Williams, John Brito as the doctor, Julie McDaniel as the first escort and Shelley Sanders as the second escort. This is the first production for Baumgartner, who minored in drama at college. He has acted in several plays and musicals at the Enchanted Hills Playhouse. He is assisted by Mrs. Max Ellen Medich and Iden.

Beer best judge Randy Beer led a Wawasee FFA livestock judging team to a first place finish in the swine division of the annual Purdue University Livestock Judging contest by placing as top individual in the swine competition. Beer scored 241 points out of a possible 250 to capture the individual honors. Joining with Beer to bring home the top swine team trophy were Marie Schafer, Ken Schafer and Troy Moneyheffer. In the overall competition, Wawasee placed 11th. Others competing from Wawasee were Jon Haab, Todd Roberts, Deb Whitacre, Kent Nulf and Troy Harney. The contestants had to place market and breeding classes in swine, beef and sheep. They also judged two classes of keep and cull breeding stock and answered questions on three sets of livestock. Over 150 teams and nearly 600 individuals competed in the contest. Ron Roberts accompanied the group.
