Nappanee firemen
devote 25 years
Three members of the Nappanee Volunteer Fire Department were recognized at a banquet on Wednesday, March 2, for 25 years of voluntary service. Glenn Reed and Warren Freed received commemorative watches and Bud Miner will receive his watch when he returns from an out-of-town trip. The banquet also served as a thank-you to the firemen's wives for their support of their husbands and the department. The Nappanee Volunteer Fire Department adopted "Smokey Stover” as an emblem and have used the name ‘ ‘Smokey Stovers’' to represent their units since 1963. Cartoonist and former Nappanee resident, Bill Holman, design the character and gave the department permission to use the emblem. When the three men joined the volunteer service 25 years ago, there were only 14 men on the department. Today, 23 volunteers serve the community. At the banquet. Freed remembered his first three fires — all industrial buildings that burned to the ground. Earlier Reed commented, “It used to be Kern involved in accident at Milford- *- Syracuse road Friday A Friday morning accident on the Milford-Syracuse Road resulted in SI,OOO of property damage and completely destroyed a 1973 Chevrolet Nova, driven by Daniel J. that we were just trying to get fires out, now we try to see how fast we can get them out. ” Reed also stressed the importance of being fully equipped for any emergency remembering one time when he was flipped by the fire hose pressure, “I still have the helmet and the scratch 1 got from the fall. THE SIGN W POST W — By Phil Beer — 457-4495 Tha Sunny Day Syndrome It happens every Spring — the snow is gone, 3 or 4 warm, sunny days in a row and the week end looks promising. People pick up the phone and make appointments to see some real estate. The house they are in is blamed for the cabin fever theyThave and only another home will cure it. It is a great boost for business after the winter doldrums. It does emphasize something practical and that is Spring is a good time to sell. Get the place picked up, raked up and wasßecTdown and you are more likely to get a buyer than any other time of year. Also the price you receive will be higher, simply because there are more lookers, more competition between buyers. Give the Beer Bunch a call. WE RE SEILING HOUSES.
Reed feels fortunate to serve on a force for 25 years where no lives were sacrificed. In an earlier interview. Miner stated another reason for 25 years of service, “It is kind of an honor to be a volunteer fireman. But the excitement eventually wears down and we keep on because of our close relationship and our desire to serve the community.”
