Swimmers set records at state meet Saturday

Coach Tim Caldwell’s Wawasee swimmers had their best times of the season, breaking five school records, at the state swim meet at Indianapolis Saturday. The times were much faster than thought possible going into the meet, Caldwell said. “We didn’t score like we thought we would, but we swam a lot faster than we expected,” said Caldwell. Several state records were set at the meet, in large part due to the engineering of the new IU-PU natatorium. Andy Wysong finished in the top 12 qualifying times when he set a Wawasee record 48.77 time in the 200 freestyle. Wysong’s time didn’t last very long, however, when in the next

Wawasee High School was the site Saturday, Feb. 26, for a junior high wrestling tournament in which 423 boys participated. The Lakeland area had seven boys who placed first at the tournament. Wawasee girls take lead in gymnastics sectional

heat Tony Boyer broke Wysong’s record with a 48.55 time. He knocked Wysong out of the scoring as a result of the quick time. In diving, Greg Day finished 12th with a 49.45 score. He broke his own school record with the score. Tim Crum set a new school record with a 57.38 time in the 100 backstroke, finishing 16th overall. The freestyle relay team of Wysong, Boyer, Crum and Bob Galloway, placed 10th with a school record 3:21.0 finish. The Warriors compiled eight team points in the meet, finishing 31 out of 44 teams scoring points. “I’m very happy with what happened,” said Caldwell. “When we can go down there and have every kid swim lifetime bests, that’s super.”

Athlete of the week

For coach Tim Caldwell’s swimming program, records fall nearly every time his swimmers race. Senior Andy Wysong established school record marks in the state meet only to have it erased by teammate Tony Boyer. Wysong has also established records in the sectional meet in the 100 freestyle with a 49.9 second-place time and in the 200 freestyle compiled a 1:49.1 time. Wysong is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Richard Wysong of Syracuse.

Caldwell will be graduating seven seniors this spring, four of whom advanced to the state. “You’re talking about some of the better kids in the state... It’s not really fair to say that next season will be a rebuilding year for us,” he explained. Day. Wysong. Crum and Boyer are all seniors. Caldwell said the all new swimming facility assists in making for faster times because the water is not as disturbed while swimming. With a depth of seven feet throughout, a swimmer does not have to fight his own water turbulance as much. In most high school pools, the depth varies considerably anywhere from three feet to 12 feet in depth causing more turbulance problems.

The entire winning team will also qualify to compete. i After the first round North Wood is in third place with 15.45 and Elkhart Memorial is fourth with 14.8. Plymouth had 7.7 and both Concord and Tippecanoe Valley failed to score. The regionals will be held next Saturday at Valparaiso beginning at 6 p.m. CST.

Clouse competed with a record field of 302 runners in the eighth annual event. He finished with a 63:59 time in the 10-mile course. Other local runners competing in the fivemile course were John Longenbaugh, Jerry Xander, Don Bokhart and Paul Hasse. Milford’s Dan Schwab also competed, finishing the 10-mile course. Defending champions were victorious with Dexter Lehman of Goshen winning the 10-mile event in a record 50:49 mark and Tom Loucks of Ossian taking the fivemileracein2s:ll.
