FIELD TRIP REPORTS — First graders at Milford Elementary School visited the sugar camp at Carlton Beer's home near Millord where they watched and tasted sap running from maple trees; watched the boiling process; and tasted the final product. Each participant was required to write a report on the field trip and each teacher chose a student from her class who wrote the best report to appear in the picture. First graders observe maple sugaring process

First graders from Milford Elementary School took a field trip on Monday to Carlton Beer ’s where they learned the maple syrup-making process. Students had the opportunity to watch and. taste the sap as it ran from the trees; watch the boiling process; and taste the final product. After the students returned to school, each first grader was required to write a report or letter on the field trip. Then, each first grade teacher picked the best article from her class for a picture in this week’s paper. Rachel Henshew from Carol Landrigan’s class wrote: Dear Mr. and Mrs. Beer The farm you had was neat. It was fun to see the sap. 1 liked it there. 1 liked that stuff from the tree. 25 first place winners

Wawasee High School students won a total of 25 first-place medals at the ISSMA sponsored auditions held at Butler University in Indianapolis. Soloists who placed in first-place were Julie McDaniel, piano; Lisa Bushong, piano; Lori Keim, vocal; Tammy Jessop, vocal and Chris Vanderveer, vocal. Wawasee had two soloists place second in the piano competition — Gina Hurd and Brian Popenfoose. Wawasee had three vocal ensembles place first. Music Festival on March 11 lakeland Community School Corporation’s Music Festival will be presented to the public on Friday. March 11, at S pun. in the Wawasee High School gymnasium. The program will include vocal and instrumental students from grades four through 12 presenting "What Would We Do Without Music?” The annual music festival provides an opportunity for students from Milford Elementary and Junior High, North Webster Elementary and Junior High, Syracuse Elementary and Junior High and Wawasee High School to combine their talents for a public musical performance. The public is invited to attend “What Would We Do Without Music?” as guests of the school corporation. Juniors ACT and SAT tests soon Juniors are asked to mail ACT and SAT college entrance tests registrations by April 1. Juniors planning to take the spring college entrance tests can sign up for the SAT preparedness workshop on April 25, 26 and 27 and May 2 and 3 by contacting the guidance department. The deadline is March 18 for these workshops.

Toby Harney enjoys acting and music

Eleven-year-old Toby Harney, son of Mr. and Mrs. Donald Harney, Milford, has been chosen by Donna Pollen, music teacher at Milford Elementary School, as the March Music Student of the Month. Toby is a fifth grade student who enjoys singing and dramatics. TOBY HARNEY In third grade, Toby played the pari of ’’Scrooge” in the musical “A Christmas Carol.” Asa fourth grader, he played the lead role in “Peter Pan,” and last summer, he competed against 57 children in his age group at the Mermaid Festival Talent Contest and won the first place trophy. Toby is a member of the fifth grade special choir and plans to continue in music in both choir and band in junior high and high school.
