Syracuse Lake Condo project faces major hurdle at BZA

By GARY LEWIS When the Syracuse Board of Zoning Appeals meets in a special session tomorrow (Thursday) evening, several issues must be decided before the board can grant a variance and special exception for the proposed Syracuse* Lake condominium project. Tuttle under investigation in reported AFNB scandie

In the Sunday edition of the Indianapolis' Star, Syracuse resident Thomas M. Tuttle, coowner and operator of the South Shore Golf Course, was implicated in complex real estate dealings that resulted in the firing of the president of Indiana’s largest bank company. According to the copyrighted story, Tuttle was alleged to have been involved with dealings culminating in the firing of Larry J. Hannah, president of the American Fletcher National Bank. Tuttle’s assistant, former Syracuse South Shore Golf Club Pro Steve Roderick, was reportedly involved with plans to skim money from the Deer Creek * Pro Shop, part of the Deer Creek condominium development in Deerfield Beach, Fla. The article said Tuttle entered into an arrangement with Hannah to take over the financial management of the Florida properties. In a telephone interview Wednesday morning, South Shore Golf Pro Jeff Bridgeford said he was certain that Roderick is still \ employed at the Deek Creek \Country Club in Deerfield Beach, Fla., despite recently published detailing Roderick’s / involvement. The Star also reported Tuttle came under investigation when 60 golf carts came up missing from the Florida golf course. According to the newspaper

An optimistic view of marriage

By GAIL WIDMOYER I Marriage is virtually universal and will remain so in our society. There is an awareness now that marriage doesn't have to have permanence if it isn't working out according to the desires and expectations of the people involved. It can be ended and reentered. Newsweek A pessimist would say 50 per cent of all 1983 marriages are going to end in divorce while an - optimist would say 50 per cent of all marriages will be successful. In an optimistic way, I interviewed nine couples in the Lakeland area to discover their views on marriage versus divorce. And while some of their statements coincide, others differ greatly, which proved to me two things. 1. People’s views on marriage versus divorce differ as much as the individual person or couple. 2. People have to work at a marriage to make it last. As I ventured out to discover ‘'the secret to a lasting marriage,” I had two precepts in mind: divorce is a prevalent part of our society, “Newsweek” says 10 per cent of the total American population is divorced; and marriage is universal, nine out of 10 young adults will marry sometime in their lives.

Westfall named NIPSCo manager

Robert F. Westfall, 35. has been appointed as the Syracuse manager of the NIPSCo office, it was announced last week. Westfall served as the assistant to the division manager of NIPSCo in Fort Wayne. Westfall replaces the retired Jay Peffley, who has worked at NIPSCo for the past 44 years. Peffley served as manager in Syracuse for 20 years. Westfall received an engineering degree from Purdue University. He has worked in the manager’s office in Bluffton, Decatur and Columbia City on a relief basis in his job as assistant division manager. Born in Chicago, he moved to Fort Wayne to work for NIPSCo. He and his wife Pamela have purchased a home in the Honeycutt Park Addition in Syracuse. Westfall admits it will be a challenge to take over Peffley’s position. “It’s going to be difficult to fill his shoes,” Westfall said.

The Couples Before more conclusions are drawn about the state of marriage in the Lakeland community, it might be a good idea to introduce the couples. “I really love my wife,” said O. Rex Lindemood, pastor at the North Webster United Methodist Church, “and I want everyone who reads The Mail Journal to know that.” Lindemood and his wife, Verna, have been married 31 years and have three children. Allegoriclly, Lindemood compared marriage to a lump of clay. A union created at the altar is the same as when a pink and a green lump of clay are mixed. In the lump, you have green and pink clay, but they can’t be pulled apart. “I do not think the average couple has any idea how different it’ll be when they walk back down the isle,” he commented. Paul and Reba Johnson, Oakwood Park, are both retired from Purdue University and believe working is an important part of marriage. “Some mothers are better mothers if they work,” she said. He confirmed her statement adding work helps a person to “gain responsibility.” They have been married 43 years. Ralph and Doris Kammerdiener, Syracuse, believe marriage is a personal adjustment for each individual. The

Todd says he needs the 30-units in order for the project to be a success. “If we had less than 30 units, then the project wouldn't be leasable," said Todd. His efforts in Jaycees were dedicated to community development. “It’s so new. Kammerdieners have been married 28 years, raised five children and both work, he for Dana and she as a school bus driver. Judy and Paul Tinkel, Milford, have been married 30 years and have raised three children. “I have proof in 30 years that marriage is something that has to be worked at and with in order for it to be successful,” commented the First Brethren minister. “I didn’t really learn anything I hadn’t thought about,” said Harold Young who has been married to his wife, Flora, for 56 years. The two have raised three children under the philosophy that “people need to be able to accept responsibility” in order for a marriage to be successful. Eldon and Nola Sorensen, Milford, summed up the job behind marriage, “Marriage’s something you’ve got to work at. It doesn’t come easy and it’s not a fairy tale. He is employed by Phend and Brown Construction and she is a Tupperware dealer. Together they raised four children and have been married 30 years. Another working couple, Joe and Betty Lou Shock, North Webster, have been married 38 years and raised three children. Both enjoy private times together when they can camp and fish. the BZA agenda The first is the most obvious — whether or not to allow a multi-family unit in a residential district. Every multifamily unit developed in a residential zoned area must be granted a special exception by the BZA. The town board’s decision last week allowed for the zoning of the proposed condo units, located at the site of the Syracuse Enterprises factory, to be changed from light industrial to residential. That change upheld a prior decision by the Kosciusko County Area Plan Commission. The town voted 3-2 in favor of the February 4 APC determination after tabling the issue in its regular meeting this month. The second case is a request for the variance for the short setback requirement from the lake’s edge. Another major issue of the BZA will involve the county’s requirement for 10.000 square feet minimum lot area The ordinance says that all lots in a residential zoned area must have a minimum lot area of 10.000 square feet if the property is on public sewer. In their years of marriage, they have raised seven children and they believe, “All of the basis for life comes from the Bible, especially marriage. ” Franklin Harvey and Norma Henwood live near North Webster and have been married 49 years. They “haven’t had much time to fight,” since they have had “kids to take care of since we were married.” The Henwoods have raised three children, have 12 grandchildren and three greatgrandchildren. Adjusting A universal thought on marriage was expressed by the Henwoods when they said, “You’ve got some adjustments when you’re living together.” At least one member of each couple interviewed had some type of personal adjustment to make when they were first married. For Mrs. Shock, marriage was a challenge while Mrs. Sorensen had to “adjust to living with men,” which by the way turned out to be “rewarding.” On the other side, Rev. Lindemood had to re-evaluate a male chauvinistic concept that “I was going to lose my freedom.” Fortunately for his wife, this

Property assessment underway

Personal property assessment began in Kosciusko County March 1. All residents owning trucks with a declared gross weight exceeding 11,000 pounds, truck bodies (including pick-up campers), trailers ( including fold down campers) recreational vehicles, snowmobiles, and all other vehicles not subject to the motor vehicle excise tax or which are not reported in a business are to be reported for personal property assessment on Form No. 101.
