Five Wawasee swimmers qudlify for state meet
For coach Tim Caldwell’s swimming team, last week’s second-place finish in the Elkhart Central Sectional was a mild disappointment. Expected to battle Central for the rights of second in the tournament, highly-favored Goshen was already a shoe-in for first, Wawasee couldn’t recover from a poor performance Thursday to make a dent in the team scoring. As a result, Wawasee finished 11 points behind the Blue Blazers. But in the all-important individual standings. Wawasee placed a solid second with five individuals in five events advancing to the state meet in Indianapolis this Saturday. Finishing the season with a sparkling 14-2 mark and a second-place conference finish, Caldwell was satisfied with his team’s efforts. Finishing third in the sectional was “the only goal we didn’t get.” Caldwell explained. “We swam as we wanted too.” Andy Wysong won the 200 freestyle, Tim Crum the 100 backstroke and the Warrior 400 freestlye relay team,- Tony Boyer, Wysong. Crum and Bob Galloway, won with a statequalifying time. Greg Day finished second in the diving competition, just missing the winner. Dave Rose of Memorial, by a few points. He finished with a 49.9 score. As is the case in almost every Wawasee swimming meet, school records were shattered. Wysong broke three school marks, with a 1:49.1 time in the 200 freestyle, a 49.9 second-place time in the 100 freestyle and was a member of the the freestyle relay team whose 321.9 time bettered the old "record of 3:23.2. Wysong beat his previous, record of 50.2 in the freestyle. Day surpassed his former championship diving record of 427.2, set in the NLC meet. Going into the sectional. Day
Beer shines at Air Force Academy
Freshmen at most major colleges usually don't get much varsity playing time. At the Air Force Academy, military life makes the role of a freshman even more insignificant. But. for Nappanee resident Todd Beer, playing in a varsity sport as a freshman in the Air F’orce Academy has become a part of his life. Beer, the son of Mr. and Mr. Bernie Beer of Nappanee and the grandson of Mr. and Mrs. Theo Beer of Milford, has earned his way to the starting five of the Falcons basketball team. His appointment to a starting role is partly due to his talent and good timing. The Air Force is short on experience this season, with only four seniors on the roster. So the coach needed someone on the squad to fill the fifth spot — someone who could play defense and help out on offense
Athlete of the week
Wawasee basketball fans have noticed someone who’s really been coming around of late. This week’s Mail-Journal “Athlete of the Week” has just about established himself as one of the area’s top shooters. In the last few contests. Senior Kevin Smith has scored in the 20s while leading his team's offensive charge. On defense, Smith is the perfect candidate for coach John Wysong’s old-fashioned hardnose player. Always ready to dive on the floor for a loose one, Smith can be seen all over the floor. Smith, a returnee for coach

will be seeded ninth, Wysong 20th in the 100 freestyle, Crum 18th in the backstroke and the relay team is touted for 10th in the state. Wysong was seeded 12th in the 200 freestyle. The Warriors will feature Wysong, Tony Boyer — who finished second in the 200 freestyle behind Wysong — Day in diving. Wysong in the 100 freestyle, and Crum in the backstroke at the state meet. The freestyle relay team will also advance. The relay team narrowly missed setting a new sectional standard with its 3:21.89 time.
Beer wasn’t an instant success — he started out on the junior varsity squad — but he has more than fulfilled a personal goal. When he entered the academy, he wanted to make it on the JV squad after making it through basic training. “I wasn’t exactly expecting everything that happened to me when I first came here,” Beer said in a local newspaper in the area. “It was a culture shock for somebody from a small farm town.” He quickly got over his culture shock, though, and started to juggle his classes, practice and military training. “I know classes come first and the military second,” he said. “It’s tough getting in after a couple hours of practice and then having to study, but I’m doing pretty good sofar.”
KEVIN ‘ SMITH ~ Myron Dickerson’s baseball team, is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Smith of Syracuse.
If the Warriors do as well as their seeded, only Day, Wysong and the relay team will advance to the finals Saturday. Caldwell is confident, however, that Wawasee will be better represented than that. “I think we have one more time drop left in us,” he said. The state meet will be held this Friday and Saturday at the new Natatorium Building on the Indiana University-Purdue University campus. Other finishers for Wawasee were: Brent Atwood, Bret Hite, Ken Herman, John Morgan. Brad Overmyer, Benji Reed, Jon Shoemaker and Todd Smith, fifth in the 200 medley relay; Phil Zachary, fourth in diving; Galloway fourth in the 200 individual medley, 10th in the 500 freestyle; Crum seventh in the Frosh drop two Coach Galen Hersberger’s freshmen were defeated twice last week, by Bremen 48-47 and Warsaw 40-32. The Warsaw contest was the first contest of the NLC tourney and the final game of the season for the Warriors. David Kistler scored 13, Rod Aaron 10 and Jon Evans seven in the losing effort. Evans had eight carems in the game. Wawasee led 16-14 at the half, but Warsaw’s size and physical play tired the Warriors in the second half. Warsaw featured some big guards in addition to an inside game and penetrated throughout the second half. At Bremen. Wawasee outscored the Lions from the field but lost it at the charity stripe. Bremen outscored Wawasee 6-1 from the foul line. “We were ahead by one with 45 seconds remaining, but we allowed them three shots and they scored with six seconds to go,” said Hershberger. Evans and Kistler both had 14 and Jeff Taylor scored 10 for the Warriors. Evans was the leading rebdunder with six rebounds. Wawasee ended the season with a 5-12 record. Girl gymnasts suffer close loss to Plymouth The Wawasee High School gymnastics team traveled to Plymouth where the girls lost a close match, 85.6-83.15. Outstanding individuals for the Lady Warriors were Gretchen Z Huffman who placed first in vault and first in floor exercise; and Rani Rinker who placed first in parallel bars. The next girls’ gymnastic meet will be Monday, Feb. 28, at East Noble*.

Packer, Stichter all-conference
Wawasee High School was well represented in the recent balloting by the Northern Lakes Conference coaches for the allconference team. Senior Maude Packer and Grace Stichter were unanimous choices to the conference first team. Packer shot 40 per cent from the field and 65 per cent at the charity stripe in NLC play. She hauled in 60 rebounds. Stichter hit 35 per cent from the field and 50 per cent from the free throw line with 17 assists and 11 steals. Named on the honorable mention list were two other Wawasee starters — junior Dee Stump and senior Carol Walker. Stump averaged 2.6 assists per game this season and nearly
Hernandez loses at state finals
Although Mike Hernandez lost in the first round of the state wrestling tournament, held last week end at Market Square Arena, Indianapolis, in the words of Coach Welborn, “We are all very proud of Mike.” Hernandez’s opponent for the first match in the 132-pound class changed after weigh-ins at Indianapolis because Jeff Miller of Northridge was three pounds over the weight class. Miller’s inability to wrestle placed Hernandez in the bracket of a second place semi-state winner rather than third and matched him against Nick Gregory of Pike High School.

Gregory defeated Hernandez by a score of 6-5 in overtime, putting Hernandez out of the tournament. Darren Grim wood of Evansville Harrison, undefeated this season, defeated Gregory and won the 132-pound championship. Hernandez, a junior at Wawasee, is expected to play an important part in the Warrior wrestling program next season. According to Coach Welborn and others at the state tournament. the trip to Market Square is an inspiring experience for anyone and will not soon be forgotten.
