Keeping sewing help from becoming o hinderance
By PATRICIA M. RATHBUN Extension Agent. Home Ec The new sewing marking pens and pencils can be a help or hinderance. It depends on how you use them. Water erasable marking pens are available in colored or white ink so there is one available for all colors of fabric. All inks used in these pens are water soluble. ’ but some inks set with heat. Therefore, be very careful not to steam press the fabric until after the marks have been removed or the steam may set the marks permanently. Make very small marks and mark as lightly as possible. Avoid marking on the right side of the fabric unless you have tested the pen on the particular fabric and are positive the marks will be removable. Then, remember to never press until the marks have been removed completely, not just dimmed. Wax marking pencils may or may not have small brushes attached for removing the marks. These pencils can be sharpened to a fine point so

precise marks are easier to obtain than when using traditional tailor's chalk. Like waxy tailor’s chalk, the mark may not brush out completely from some fabrics, so experiment on a scrap of fabric before marking the garment. Also, the stiff brush may damage the surface of some brushed or napped fabrics. Pens with disappearing ink can also be a help or a hinderance. These pens contain ink that fades witfan 48 hours. Thus, the ink is both air and water soluble. They are fine for marking and sewing immediately, but sometimes the marks fade very quickly. Thus, these pens are not for the home sewer who takes days to finish a project. Remembering which pen is which once the cardboard packaging has been removed may be a problem because many pens are identifiable only by the trade name. This may mean storing them in their original package or taping a label to the pen. All in all. marking pens and pencils are still great time savers and useful sewing tools. No hotels If you’ve got persistant roaches at your place, try this: Sprinkle boricacid powder or borax along baseboards wherever roaches roam. Repeat every six months.
I LOUISA’S LETTER S Dear Louisa.
Why is it that so many people can be nice in public and so mean when they get home? 1 have watched my parents and when they are out among strangers they are so polite and considerate to everyone and to each other. Many people remark on what a lovely couple they are and how happy our home must be. But 1 could tell them some things that might change their minds. They say mean things to each other after they get home and each one tries to blame the other for everything that goes wrong. It gets me all worked up inside. Why do people act like that? -Unhappy—Mass. Answer: Well, unfortunately, some people seem to think that they can relax in the privacy of their homes and let off steam and irritations that have been repressed while they were among other people whom they were trying to impress. 1 think you can be happy for one thing, however, and that is the fact that they are polite and considerate to each other when they are out in public. There is nothing worst than seeing a wife or husband snipping at each other and belittling their mates to outsiders.

But they are doing a great deal of harm to each other and particularly to their children when they create an unhappy feeling in the home. Statistics show us that many juvenile delinquents are those that come from broken homes or from tension filled homes. Parents teach more important things to their children by the example they set in the home of devotion and lack of fear than by all the teaching, preaching and punishment that can be used. To develop moral stability a child must have a feeling of security and this is not possible if he is never sure of what one or the other parent will do or say—or whether they will be there to answer questions when he gets in trouble or is beset by problems. Your parents need to learn control. They could do well to read the following verse from an unknown writer: We flatter those we scarcely know We please the fleeting guest And deal full many a thoughtless blow To those we love the best.
