Lent: A time to pause and ponder
By SHARON STUCKMAN The 40 days leading to Easter is a time known as Lent. Many Christians observe this special religious season by performing some form of self-denial. Ministers often suggest special scriptures for their congregation to read each day during Lent. Many people fast during Lent or abstain from something. Luke 4:1-4 reads “And Jesus being full of the Holy Ghost returned from Jordan, and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness. Being 40 days tempted of the devil. And in those days he did eat nothing; and when they ended, he afterward hungered. And the devil said unto him, If thou be the Son of God, command this stone that it be made bread. And Jesus answered him saying, “It is written. That man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word of God." On Sunday, Feb. 20, a community Lenten service was held at Saint Andrews United Methodist Church. Syracuse. Other community services are being planned for the Easter season and several churches

special pitch-in dinner on March 13 at the church. Rev. Philip Frew has suggested a list of scriptures for the congregation to read each day and made some suggestions that persons might use for abstinence. One item, which might be difficult for some to give up for one day, would be caffeine. At North Webster United Methodist Church Lenten Services will be held each Sunday evening at 6 p.m. The first service was February 20 and featured the Warsaw Church of God puppets. On February 27 Rev. Larry Ray from Kendallville Trinity church will be preaching, with a Hymn Sing. On March 6, at 4:30 p.m., there will be a family carry-in dinner and at 6 p.m. Ernie Johnson, magician, will be presenting the special service.
The Newspaper DIDLE WHY WORRY? THERE’S A BETTER WAY! Jesus said, “Don’t worry about whether you have enough food to eat or clothes to wear. For life consists of far more than food and clothes. Look at the ravens — they don’t plant or harvest or have barns to store away their food, and yet they get along all right —for God feeds them. And youare far more valuable to him than any birds! “And besides, what's the use of worrying? What good does it do? Will it add a single day to your life? Os course not! And if worry can't even do such little things as that, what’s the use of worrying over bigger things? “Look at the lilies! They don’t toil and spin, and yet Solomon in all his glory was not robed as well as they are. And if God provides clothing for the are here today and gone tomorrow, don’t you suppose that he will provide clothing for you, you doubters? And don’t worry about food — what to eat and drink; don’t worry at all that God will provide it for you. All mankind scratches for its daily bread, but your heavenly Father knows your needs. He will always give you all you need from day to day if you will make the Kingdom of God your primary concern. “So don’t be afraid, little flock. For it gives your Father great happiness to give you the Kingdom. Sell what you have and give to those in need. This will fatten your purses in heaven! And the purses of heaven have no rips or holes in them. Your treasures there will never disappear; no thief can steal them; no moth can destroy them. Wherever your treasure is, there your heart and thoughts will also be.” Luke 12:2-34 BIBLE VERSE

March 13, at 6 p.m. the Sunday School will present a play and on March 20 the Steve Jordan Quartet will be at the 6 p.m. service. In preparation for Lent Rev. David Maish of Calvary United Methodist Church, Syracuse, has suggested that his congregation think on the following: “We go to the art gallery, there is a certain painting that we wish to see to get from it all that we can of meaning and inspiration. Do we do that by just rushing past it? No, we have, literally, to wait in its presence, to sit down in front of it, to let it speak to our innermost soul.” “So it is with God, We have to open our souls to him, to let his personality invade ours. In this Lenten season, let us find occasions to be still and come to know God.”

The huge treat, complete with cherry, was served to the congregation following the evening service. (Photo by Ron Baumgartner) FAITH SHOWS THAT THE RIGHT PRAYERS WILL BE ANSWERED ® kd Jr i| 1 V <'• XWfaf ' childhood, most of us have experienced the * disappointment of not getting everything that we have prayed for; particularly when our prayers would degenerate into a shopping list, as though we perceived God to be just a form of Santa Claus. Moreover, if we did not outgrow this unfortunate habit, the results in later years were even more< devastating. There are some good lessons to be learned about prayer at our House of Worship, and we find them clearly stated in the Bible; to the effect that God is already aware of our needs, and that if we ask Him for the wrong things we are not likely to receive them. The real purpose of praying is to thank God for the blessings that we have, and to ask for guidance as to how we may best serve Him. The answer to this prayer will bring us more true happiness than all the material possessions on earth. ’
