Warriors pound Panthers

After a game like last week’s blasting of NLC-rival North Wood, Wawasee’s basketball team answered a lot of questions in addition to establishing itself as the leader in the conference. The final score was a complete surprise to everyone in the conference. With North Wood’s highly-praised frontliners, the 97 Panthers were expected to give the Warriors all they could handle. But the Warriors completely dominated all phases of the game in eliminating North Wood from the ranks of contender in theNLC. Coach John Wysong had nothing but praise for his team in last week’s game. He said everyone contributed and executed, but he mentioned three important keys in the 85-55 win. (For more details, see related article below) “I thought one of our biggest keys was Kevin Smith’s play in the first half.” Smith’s play was a bit of a surprise to most. In the Rochester win, a game the Warriors were lucky to come out a winner, Smith was not up to par. But Wysong said he “always felt like he would come back.” Smith scored 22 points on 11-of-15 from the floor and was diving, blocking and generally being a pain in the neck for the Panthers’ offensive plans. Ron Spunar, Wawasee’s 6-10 senior center, had his best night of his career. He didn’t score many points, but his 19 rebounds was another difference in the contest. “Another big key is that Ron established himself inside. He was going to bother them inside on the defensive end and he was going to shoot on the offensive end of the floor. Maybe he wouldn’t hit ’em. but he was going to shoot it. ’ Junior Jon Vitaniemi scored 10 points and had seven rebounds despite missing more than half of the game. “He came out rippin’, took it right in to Crist (NorthWocd’s Todd “Noy with Spoon shooting from one side and Vito from the other, with Walls and Smith banging in everything they shoot,” Wysong said, the Warriors had just about it all. And to top it off, reserve guard Kim Zurcher came into the contest and “kept things gding,” he said.

Wawasee 85 North Wood 55~

They call the Panthers home court “the Pit.” But Wawasee's gymnasium could be called “the Buzzsaw” based on last Friday night’s performance. It was nothing less than a masterpiece. Wawasee saved its best effort of the season for the biggest NLC game so far for North Wood’s Panthers. Described as “too close to call” by most area basketball enthusiasts, the Warriors played a near flawless game in the NLC clash, taking it to the Panthers 85-55. Despite the Panthers 9-7 record on the season, everyone, even Wysong, expected North Wood’s outstanding size to give Wawasee fits all night long. But an awesome effort by 6-10 senior center Ron Spunar, and some high-class shooting out of Kevin Smith and Brian Walls, quickly ended any thoughts of a North Wood win. The Panthers led 2-0 in the opening seconds of the contest, a lead that proved to be the Panthers’ last, before the Warriors started their rout. Wawasee jumped out to an 8-2 lead early and built up to a 2212 lead at the end of the first stanza. The Warriors never let up in the second quarter, scoring 26 more, to take a 48-24 lead at the half. The Warriors continued to dominate in the second half, using position to gain a decisive rebounding advantage. The Warriors ran the fast break to near-perfection, kicking the ball out long to a streaking Smith or Walls. Wawasee was deadly from the perimeter and forced North Wood into bad shots. Wawasee was red hot from the field, rebounding from a poor showing at Rochester with nearly 50 per cent shooting from the field while holding North Wood to 36 per cent. Ron Spunar scored 12 and grabbed 19 rebounds, by far his best effort of the season. North Wood, with several players 6-6 or better, was one of the biggest front lines Wawasee had to face all season. Kevin Smith was 11-of-15 from the field for 22, followed by Walls with 20. Jon Vitaniemi scored 10 and was a major factor early despite getting into foul trouble in the early going. Reserve guard Kim Zurcher scored 11 on a nifty 4-of-6 from the floor. For North Wood, Todd Crist .scored 14, Chip Stump 12,

to do it again, which they did, 5542. Neither team sewed in the first two minutes but the Bulldogs then scored twice. Syracuse bounced back for seven straight points and led 12-11 at the end of the first quarter. South Whitley had three starters over six foot and the

followed by Jim Mast and Jeff Jones with 10. When Vitaniemi was benched with three fouls, Joel Rhoades came off the bench and played exceptionally well in a reserve role. The loss drops the Panthers out of contention for the NLC crown at 3-3 and 9-8 overall. WAWASEE (85) — Smith 11-15 0-01, Zurcher 4-6 3-3 4, Doll 0-1

Yellow Jackets were battling a height disadvantage as well as playing on the Bulldogs home court. But Tim Mangas and Todd Roberts fought them off in the first half, combining for 19 points. The Yellow Jackets trailed by one point at halftime, 22-21, but coach Tom Jones’ crew was ready for the second half.

Wed., February 16,1983 — THE MAIL-JOURNAL

With two games remaining. Northfield this Friday and Bremen the following week, Wawasee is in a great position to make their season the most wins since the 1971-72 basketball season. At 14-2, two more wins in front of the home folks could drastically change the complexion of the Wawasee basketball program. “We were really pleased with Kevin because he needed that big game and got it. Rhoades (Joel) came in and did his job. ” With Vitaniemi saddled early with three quick fouls, Rhoades came off the bench and kept things going Wawasee’s way inside. His crucial rebounds and performance keyed the Wawasee win. Probable starters for former Wawasee assistant coach Gary Baker are two senior cousins, DukK.Deeter and Bryan Deeter. Duke, a 6-3 forward, averages 12 points a game and Bryan, a 5-9 guard, averages nine points a game. Mike Rees, a 62 junior, scores around seven points per game and 6-5 senior Todd Miller in their center at 11 points per game The other starter is 5-10 junior Brian Reed. The Norsemen will be coming off a 72-59 loss to Marion Bennett and are 3-15 on the season. Baker said he is not surprised by the Warriors success this season. Baker coached almost the entire Wawasee starting five on the JV team last season. So Baker should have his team wellprepared for the Warriors. Furthermost in Wysong’s mind right now is to continue what he’s been doing all season with his ball club. After a big win the week before, most people will expect the Warriors to have a letdown. Wysong isn’t sure how his team will react, since North Wood was the first real blow-out this season. will never be overconfident. I never underestimate a team. I expect the unexpected, so we just play,” said Wysong. Wysong admits, however, that this week’s contest has the perfect ingredients for an upset. “We are in a perfect position to get beat, with a title game coming up the following Wysong admitted. \ “We are going to hone in this week on what we re going to do and do it. We’ll try to do it a little better, but we ll keep drilling on the things we’ve been drilling on all season long and emphasizing the points we’ve been emphasizing on all season.” said Wysong.
