Regional victory for wrestling team

By SHARON STUCKMAN While wrestling doesn’t carry with it the following that Hoosier Hysteria does, the regional championship won by the Warrior wrestlers on Saturday is no less important than the title won by the girls. The boys have every right to be proud of their accomplishments. In what coach Richard Welborn terms as “the greatest effort the team could give,” the Warrior wrestling team captured the regional victory at Fort Wayne Carroll Saturday. Wawasee has four wrestlers qualified for the semi-state, which will be held Saturday at Fort Wayne North Side. The Warriors have one regional champion and three runners-up. David Melendez won the regional crown at the 126-pound class. Melendez defeated Jon Spaw of East Noble 9-5 in the final round of the regional. The same two wrestlers met in the final round of the sectional on Saturday, Jan. 29, at East Noble, where Melendez won 7-4. Wawasee compiled 86 pounts to win the championship. DeKalb was second with 72 1 2 . The leaders were followed by Fort Wayne Harding with 69’2, Elmhurst with 65, East Noble with 59 1 ?, Concordia with 54, Northrop with 46 * 2 , Homestead

THE TIMING COULD NOT HAVE been any better for last Saturday night's traditional sectional championship celebration following the Lady Warriors’ victory over Warsaw. AH who attended was part of a special moment when coach Rich Welborn’s wrestling team stepped in for some welldeserved recognition. The Wawasee wrestlers had just stepped off of their bus from Fort Wayne when Coach Dale Brannock reached a stopping point during his postgame remarks. It was a special night for Coach Welborn and his wrestling program. Wawasee won the Regional championship with two third place finishers, one champion — David Melendez — and three runnersup. With one of the most balanced teams in the Regional. Wawasee’s performance can be attributed to good coaching. The Warriors won the match, as it ended up, easily. Melendez and the three runner-up finishers will compete in Saturday’s Semi-State at Fort Wayne North Side. Coach Welborn said this year’s team gave the best effort he’s ever seen. That’s quite a compliment from a man whose seen many wrestling teams. A BASKETBALL FEAST IS IN STORE for Wawasee fans this week end. The main course begins Friday with Coach John Wysong’s boys team in a crucial NLC match-up with North Wood The Panthers will present another tough challenge for Wawasee. The North Wood game places the Warriors in the forefront of the NLC chase. A win Friday would put the Warriors in the driver’s seat and, if Goshen knocks off Plymouth, could put Wawasee in strong contention for sole ownership of the conference title. A big crowd Friday would be a big boost for the Warriors. Even Wysong, who usually says little about the crowd, hopes for a large following. North Wood fans are known to make their presence felt, both at home and asay. On probation for an

Yellow Jackets advance

The Syracuse Yellow Jackets eighth grade boys’ basketball team advanced to the second round of the Camelot Tourney with a convincing 52-37 defeat of Pierceton. The girls’ team was defeated by Pierceton 30-11. Tim Mangas took command of the game in the first quarter, scoring 10 points and rebounding at both ends of the court. Mangas finished the game with 21 points and 16 rebounds. Throughout the first three quarters the Yellow Jackets would build a lead only to watch the Cubs fight back. Syracuse had 20 field goals to the Cubs 12,

incident involving an upset fan, Nappanee’s dedication to its team is now well documented. THE REAL BIG GAME of the week, of course, is Saturday’s Warsaw Girls’ Basketball Regional. Action begins at 11 a.m. with Columbia City and East Noble followed by WHS and Culver Military Academy at 12:30 p.m. This season’s Regional slate is exactly the same pairings as last season’s. But this time around, all three teams are down from last season, except for the possible exception of Culver. At 10-1, the Eagles’ record is nothing to sneeze at, no matter what teams they played. Brannock expects a run-and-gun style offense and full-court pressure on defense; although. Coach Jerry Thomas for Culver wouldn’t admit what he’ll use Saturday. If there ever is such a thing as a “golden opportunity” to make it to Fort Wayne, the Lady Warriors could have it this season. Wawasee looks to be better than all three teams on paper, but all Hoosier Hysteria veterans know that records go out the window in tourney play. The most important aspect of Saturday’s contest will be the mental preparedness of Brannock’s team. Visibly upset by the fate of their injured teammate, Dee Stump, the Wawasee girls need to put all of that behind them to win Saturday. If the Lady Warriors can eliminate those outside influences, Principal Howard Hull will get his picture taken with another Wawasee’s Regional winter sports champions. Loyal Wawasee backer Derk Kuhn, who helps this reporter with keeping stats, wore a three-piece suit at last week’s championship game. Saying a “class team deserves a class act,” Kuhn promises to wear a tuxedo to the state tourney if the Lady Warriors make it that far. If that catches on, then the Lady Warriors will have a well-dressed, in addition to loyal, following.

with 41 1 / 2 , Carroll with 38, Columbia City with 22, North Side with 19, West Noble with and Eastside with 11. The 112-pound match, according to Welborn, “was a good draw, and the performance of Rob DeSomer was a big deciding factor.” DeSomer lost the final match to Dalen Spaw of Homestead 19-2. At 132 Mike Hernandez lost the championship round in a much closer match than the 8-1 score indicates. At the beginning of the third period Hernandez’s opponent, Alan Druhot, was leading 31. ' i Hernandez put in a hold taking Druhot to the mat for possible takedown and back points, but the wrestlers were ruled off the mat and no points given. Chuck Cotton, the other regional runner-up for the Warriors lost the championship round 6-2 at the 105-pound class to Barney Ulrich of Harding. Two Wawasee wrestlers placed third for the Warriors after losing the first round of their respective weight classes to the champion in that class. These third place wins were “important to help the team gain victory,” said the coach. Third place winners for the Warriors at regional were Juan Roa and Todd Reiff.

but, Pierceton hit 13 of 18 free throws to stay in the game. Mangas hit three field goals at the start of the fourth quarter to up the Syracuse lead to 12 points and from then on the game was never in doubt. Seeing action were 11 Yellow Jackets with eight of them scoring. Todd Roberts and Jeremy Corson contributed eight points each and combined for 17 rebounds. The Yellow Jackets, as a team, hit over 40 per cent of their shots from the field and 12 of the 17 free throws. Girls* Game The Syracuse girls’ team was not as fortunate, as the Pierceton team dominated the game for the second time this year. This is the first time in three years that the Syracuse girls have not made it to the finals of the Camelot Tourney. Tourney finals will be held in Milford on Thursady, Feb. 10, with the girls’ game beginning at 6:30 p.m. followed by the boys’ game.

Warriors — Panthers in key NLC game

It’s showdown time in the NLC. Elkhart’s TV 28 picked the Goshen-Plymouth clash as the area's “game of the week’’ but if you want the real battle in the Northern Lakes Conference. Wawasee High School will be the place to be Friday night. With Wawasee’s 4-1 mark in loop play, and the Panthers’ two losses in NLC action, the Wawasee-NorthWood clash is the only game between two teams in contention for a piece of the conference crown. The Redskins are pretty much out of contention and if the Warriors win both this Friday’s game and the Bremen game next week, the best Plymouth can do is tie with Wawasee for the crown. And since the Warriors

Wawasee 59 Rochester 53

ROCHESTER - Wawasee had to overcome a poor three quarters but managed to get things together in the final stanza, downing Rochester 59-53. From the outset, things did not look all that good for the Warriors to win their 12th game of the season. A few quick whistles and some turnovers resulted in a 4-0 Rochester lead with the game just a few minutes old. Coach John Wysong helped the Zebra cause when he was whistled for a technical foul in an attempt to gamer the official’s attention. That early lead proved to be the biggest lead Rochester could muster in the contest that was big in defensive plays but short on offensive fireworks. Wawasee’s defense was as tough as ever, holding Rochester to 22 points in the second half. But the offense was a sharp contrast to the hot-shooting, slick-passing club that won seven straight two weeks ago. The Warriors built leads of three-to-five points throughout the second quarter despite the laxadasical effort on the offensive end.

defeated the defending conference and state champions already, everyone knows who the. real conference champs would be. It certainly isn’t time to start engraving the NLC trophy with Wawasee’s name, though, because the Warriors will have another tough battle Friday night. Sounding like a broken record, coach Jam Wysong said his team must do what it's done in all of the 12 wins, play hard, block out, crash the boards, and play defense North Wood comes to town fresh off a big win against Goshen last week end and its big guns are capable of destroying the Warriors inside the paint. If the

A Rochester scoring spurt moments before halftime put the Zebras back into lead. Using a full-court press, Rochester forced Wawasee into several turnovers and disrupted what little offense the Warriors had working for them. The Rochester pressure, coupled with Wawasee errors, resulted in a 31-26 halftime lead forRHS Wawasee came back in the second half with a fresh Jon Vitaniemi, who was benched early in the game due to foul trouble, and some crucial free throw shooting. Vitaniemi connected on a move inside to give Wawasee a 34-33 lead. Things shifted back in Rochester’s direction a moment later, but the Warriors’ man-to-man pressure started to wear down the Rochester regulars. Trailing by three with 1:45 left to go in the third period, Wysong called time and the Warriors promptly got back within a point on four straight free throws by Jeff Atwood and Vitaniemi, cutting the Zebra margin to 43-42 Wawasee jumped ahead on a

Panthers so choose, they can start with three 6-6 kids up front Fa the first time this season, coach John Wysong admitted his team's chances for a win look long. “We’ll have to play a little over our heads, but I think we can doit,’saidWysong. After a discussion with Wysong about the Panthers, one would think he's their public relations representative. ““They have good talent, good skills and the Crist kid plays a good post. ” In order for the Warriors to win, they must cover all facets of the game. A tall task against a team that's surpised several opponents. Currently 9-7 on the season, the Panthers look to be in top form at this point in the season. ““It all boils down to

layup by Vitaniemi at the beginning of the final stanza and the Warriors never trailed from that point on. Wawasee’s ability to hit free throws keyed the Wawasee domination in the fourth as the Warriors ordered their own full-court press. Atwood converted on three of four charity tosses in'the final seconds to give Wawasee the winning margin. Brian Walls was the leading scorer with 17 for Wawasee. followed by Vitaniemi s 14. Ron Spunar added 11. with eight blocked shots. Spunar’s defense kept the Zebras from mounting any serious attack. John Paulik led Rochester in scoring with 14, followed by Rusty Triplett with 13 and Brian Johnson with 12. The win put the Warriors into contention for the NLC crown with a 4-1 record in loop play. The Warriors could win at least a share of the conference crown with wins in their final NLC games, both at home, and could win the title outright depending on what defending champion Plymouth does against Goshen this Friday
