UM lay leaders are 'worth their weight'
(EDITOR'S NOTE Re* David W Widmoyer is pastor at Hastings Island Chapel United Methodist Church, r 2 Milford. and he wrote the following explanation about the church appointed lay leader Larry Haney, r 2 Milford holds the position at Island Chapel) By DAVID W- WIDMOYER The United Methodist Church provides for many offices an 4 positions within the congregation to expediate a better Christian ministry. One of the unique officers of the church is the lay leader. The lay leader may be a man or woman who is elected to that office because of his or her dedication and loyalty to the congregation. The lay leader, by virtue of office, serves on many of the important boards, commissions and committees of the church as an ex-officio member. In that capacity, he is able to coordinate the activities of the several committees as they seek to achieve a specified program or project which requires joint cooperation among the committees. A mistaken concept of the description of a lay leader is that he or she is representative of the average member in the congregation. This is not true.

Unique Individuals Every good lay leader maintains a sense of Christian calling which places him above the average. The skills required in the performance of his office require a total dedication to working in several areas of church life at the same time. Consequently, a great demand of time sacrifice is required of each leader. Larry Haney serves our congregation ♦ Hastings Island Chapel United Methodist Church) in this capacity, and people in the community are aware of Larry’s work in CROP and the Gideons in Kosciusko County. At the same time, Larry spends many extra hours in his role as lay leader. Another service of the lay leader is his ability to serve as a liason between the members of the congregation and the minister and staff of the church. We are all aware of instances in which we have felt that the minister was going in one direction and the people were aimed in a different direction. A sensitive lay leader can avoid this confusion by blending the efforts of clergy and people into one united campaign. Often times, programs which are implemented beyond the local church structure, i.e. district and conference

programs, need to be interpreted and explained to the local congregation. Again, we call upon the lay leader to define these programs. Examples could be camping opportunities, district retreats and seminars and special meetings called to examine problems within the Christian community. It is the task of the lay leader to promote the educational and training opportunities for the people of the church. Community Liason We depend upon the lay leader to serve as a liason with the community. Community needs are a very important aspect of the ministry of each church but often these needs are not reported to the church for consideration or action. The leader must bring the outside needs to the attention of

the program of the church. The lay leader should analyze the direction and emphases of the church program and suggest alternative actions or goals for the consideration of the leadership of the church. Churches have a habit of “getting in a rut” and need a reinterpretation of goals and projects so that they may become more viable to the world as the Body of Christ. Finally, the lay leader must be ready to till the vacancies when other officers or church staff are absent from their duties. This service as a “substitute” requires knowledge of the various duties of officers, an awareness of on-going programs, and certain skills and abilities in public speaking and leadership roles. All in all, a good lay leader is “worth his weight in gold. ”

We will be remembered best for the joy we radiate
Esßjvery popular man recently passed away, following a lengthy illness whose terminal nature was known to him from the outset; and in spite of which he continued to do the work he loved as long as possible. He was a brilliant writer and a patriot, but neither of these qualities would have caused the tremendous outpouring of affection during his illness, or the massive turnout at his funeral. What endeared him to everyone was the constant joy that emanated from him, with a ready smile and an uncomplaining cheerfulness in his speech and writings that he maintained even while knowing that he had little time left. He was a pleasure to be near and an inspiration to others, who found their own spirits uplifted by his presence. At your House of Worship you can acquire this habit of exuding joy, and the satisfaction of being able to brighten someone else’s day as a result of it.
