Brannock's team is ready for sectional war

By GARY LEWIS Finishing the regular season with only two losses in the year is quite an accomplishment for any basketball team in Indiana. But if you're a Wawasee Lady Warrior fan, chances are it's going to take a little bit more to be completely satisified with Wawasee’s season. The two losses were bitter ones — Goshen and Bremen — and cost Wawasee a conference championship But a new season is about to get underway, and for coach Dale Brannock its a new beginning. Picked as the favorite with their sparkling regular season finish. Brannock hopes to get his squad fit and trim for Thursday’s contest with Tippe Valley. “There's no sure winner in a situation like this. We could very easily go in and get bumped off. It's a second season, nothing we’ve done in the past counts for anything. " he said. That includes losing as well Brannock believes his club will

rebodhd from last week’s disaster at Bremen, but he’s aware of the fate of all who participates in Hoosier Hysteria — “One slip and you’re gone. " After the loss at Bremen, Brannock said adjustments would be made. “We talked about it in the locker room. We know what the situation is and what we have to do.” “We re in the same situation. They called us a favorite last year (and) we should be, on the basis of our record and what we’ve done. There’s no added pressure, or anything like that, as far as I’m concerned. ” Brannock says sectional preparation is a little tough at times, because a team can’t look ahead. “You can’t look ahead, but you’ve always got to plan ahead, " he said. And that's exactly what

Brannock and assistants Barb Brouwer and Jim Hite have been doing lately. They’ve made their picks of the regional favorites and if the Lady Warriors make it that they’ll be better prepared. Tippe Valley features a strong outside shooting squad, led by guard Tammy Cooper ( 8.3 ppg) a 5-6 senior. Brannock doesn’t know for sure, but he thinks that Valley coach Bill Leininger may slow things up a bit and try holding the ball. In a game on December 7, the Lady Warriors won in a lobsided 53-28 affair. So Leininger’s possible plans for holding the ball could make sense. Tippe Valley is the only team in the Warsaw tourney with a losing record at 8-10. The Bremen game was a learning experience for Brannock and his team, and one he’s confident his players have learned from. After the loss at Bremen, Brannock said adjustments would be made. “We talked about

it after the ball game in the locker room. We know what the situation is and we know what we have to do. I have enough confidence in the kids that they’re going to bounce back,” he said. If the Lady Warriors come out a winner in Thursday’s contest, they’ll play the winner of the Triton-Warsaw game to be played at 8 p.m. that night. Brannock said the TritonWarsaw clash should be an interesting contest. Warsaw is 11-7 on the season and has improved considerably since Wawasee wiped them out 63-29 in both club’s first game. Coach Mary Hurley’s team scored an impressive 60-57 over Goshen at the Tiger Den. Triton is 12-4 on the season and the Trojans rely on 6-0 junior center Lori Feldman to do most of the team’s scoring. She averaged 23.1 points per game and is by far the most potent scorer of all four teams.

Bremen ends Lady Warriors' NLC chase

Bremen was certainly not Warrior country last Thursday as both the varsity and junior varsity squad came up empty. The varsity loss was the second of the season and the JV loss was the first. ' The varsity lost to Bremen's Lady Lions, who are now the Northern Lakes Conference champions, 50-46. The Warriors end up in second-place in the conference, thanks to an earlier loss to arch-rival Goshen. Fouls were a contributing factor in the game. The Lady Warriors were whistled for 27 while Bremen had only 12 personals called. Bremen’s girls scored 24 of their 46-point total from the charity stripe and never missed a free toss, ending the game with making 73 per cent of their free throw attempts. A disappointed coach Dale Brannock said the free throws were the difference. “We got beat at the free throw line. We got outhustled. “We will make some adjustments and we’ll be okay,” he said. Wawasee out rebounded Bremen 33-19. At the half.

“We know what we have to do. I have enough confidence in the kids that they’re going to bounce back,” — coach Dale Brannock. In head-to-head competition. Warsaw beat Triton by four points early in the season and coach Larry Wattenbarger is preparing his team for just about every kind of defense. Warsaw will be corning out with something special to shutdown Feldman and Triton’s reaction to the pressure could be the key in this contest. Wawasee will not be at full strength in this week's contest and coach Brannock’s starting line-up could change before game Intermediate gymnastics team wins On Thursday, Jan. 217, the Wawasee gymnastics team traveled to Concord. Concord did not have an optional team but Wawasee’s intermediate team won by a score of 77.6 t 069.35. Placing for Wawasee were Michelle Leffler, first on beam; Gretchen Huffman second on floor and beam; Michelle Berger, third on floor; Raeni Rinker first on bars and third on vault; Marcia Taylor second on bars; and Stephanie Crow second on vault.

Wawasee owned a 28-27 lead and rarely got a trip to the charity stripe thanks to only three Bremen personal fouls. Bremen’s comeback at the charity stripe put them ahead 36-30 late in the third quarter and from that point on Wawasee could never get the lead back. Katie DeSantis led Bremen, with 17 followed by 15 for Chris Jones and 10 for Beth Eckert. Dee Stump played a fine game, scoring 14 followed by Grace Stichter’s and Maude Packer’s 10, In the JV contest, coach Barb Brouwer’s team led 18-11 at the end of three quarters but another Bremen comeback, again at the free throw line, ended the Lady Warriors’ hope for an undefeated season when the Lady Lions scored the winning bucket with :03 to go for the 23-21 win. time. Brannock wouldn't say who’s feeling the worse, but did say that “several are not feeling good.” But despite it all, the recently poor performance and the flu, Brannock thinks the Lady Warriors can win. “We re going to be alright ... I think some people will get a shock with the play in the sectional. I hope it’s a good shock because were ready.”
