i —— I WAS TALKING TO MAIL-JOURNAL publisher Arch Baumgartner the other day about the M-J sports pages, when the idea came up about a sports column every so often on these pages. He said it would give my sports reporting a 1 personal touch, something that’s been missing from ! The Mail-Journal. After all, with the success Wawasee High School has been enjoying lately, there should be plenty of things to write about. Being in a community for only six months, though, surely doesn’t qualify one to be an expert on local high school sports. So this column won’t be written by someone who thinks he knows more 1 about sports than the rest of the community. It will be written by a reporter, an interpreter at best, who will write about the events and the people surrounding athletics at Wawasee. Hopefully, it will add insight and entertainment for the reader and will benefit the coaches and athletes it recognizes. This is by no means a closed column. It’s open to suggestions and to criticism. Occasionally, a guest columnist will write these paragraphs. It might not appear every week, but it will appear frequently in an effort to improve the sports coverage of this newspaper. So, here it goes,!he first edition of Side Lines: WAWASEE’S BASKETBALL PROGRAM took it on the chin last week, with coach John Wysong’s boys’ team dropping two in a row and the girls’ disappointing loss at Bremen Thursday. But another successful winter sport, wrestling, won a big match last Saturday, winning the East Noble sectional easily with seven champions. A big story was the super-effort senior Todd Reiff displayed. The bruising fullback for coach Myron Dickerson’s football team went out for the sport his junior year —a rather late start for most wrestlers. Battling a 104-degree temperature, Reiff defeated his opponents and ended up the 177-pound champion. He paid the price for his efforts later this

Michael Hernandez won the 132-pound class by defeating Wade James of East Noble in 4.55 in the championship match. In the final round of the 145-pound class Tony Blackburn defeated Eric Ray by pin in 3:14 and Todd Reiff defeated Douglas Roe in the championship round of the 177-pound class 75. Tim Fraser won the 185-pound class by defeating Clint Williams of West Noble 10-6 in the final match of that weight class. DeSomer lost the championship round of the 112-pound class in overtime to Mike Rudolph of East Noble by a score of 6-2, and Steve Yoder lost to East Noble’s Les Nivens in the final match of the 138-pound class by a score so 5-3. Coach Richard Welborn said the Warriors are “ready to go to the regional and give them our best .” Wawasee will wrestle at Fort Wayne Carroll on Saturday.

week, and is currently suffering from a doctordetermined virus in one of his lungs. Welborn said Reiff will probably be prepared for the regional this Saturday. “He’ll be back,” said Welborn. If dedication has anything to do with it, then Reiff will return. HAVE YOU MADE YOUR PICKS yet for the girls’ sectional this week? A few weeks ago, Wawasee would have been the hands down favorite to walk away with its second consecutive sectional crown. But a greatly-improved Warsaw team, who upset Goshen, has thrown a kink in picking the “favorite.” But the recent loss to Bremen hasn’t dampned the spirits of head coach Dale Brannock. He still considers his team the favorite, but he knows anything can happen. The first game gets underway at 6:30 p.m. Thursday against Tippe Valley. Valley is the only team with a losing record in the tourney field while Warsaw’s much-improved team faces Triton in the second game at 8 p.m. The recent loss at Bremen brings up a lot of question marks for coach Dale Brannock’s club. But not for Brannock. “It’s a second season,” he said, one that he believes his girls will be prepared for. “We’re going to be alright.” Look for some surprises in tomorrow’s matchup. In addition to a brand-new starting line-up, Tippe Valley may just try to slow things down. Wawasee has been battling the flu bug lately, and as of Tuesday, Brannock was not sure who will have a green light to play. Wawasee demolished the Lady Vikings two months ago, so chances are Tippe Valley will attempt a few tricks to insure that it won’t happen again. Triton’s got Lori Feldman in the 8 p.m. contest with Warsaw, and the Lady Tigers could have their hands full. If Brannock’s confidence is any indication, then the Lady Warriors will do just fine this week and will make another regional trip.
defeated Jim Cramsie 9-3. Todd Reiff won the 177-pound class by pinning Shawn Swartzendruber in 4:49. In the 185pound class Wawasee won another match by pin when Tim Fraser pinned Jeff Anglemyer in 1:41. In the heavyweight division Wawasee took its second loss as Fairfield’s well known wrestler Herb Hofer pinned Pat Inks in 50 seconds. Wawasee’s season record is 8-2 overall and 5-2 in the NLC. The junior varsity, who ended its season 9-1, defeated the Falcons 24-0, with five matches wrestled. Wawasee junior varsity winners were Brad Traviola, Ron Martin, Ned Hunsburger, Don Kauffman and Lance Lantz.
