Economical washing
By PATRICIA M. RATHBUN Extension Agent, Home Ec Let s face it! It takes money to keep clothes clean — hot water, detergent and the electricity to ran the washer (and sometimes the dryer), and the gas or elec tricity to heat the water. Detergent and heating the water are the two major costs of dnmg the laundry. So, it seems logical to reduce costs, reduce the temperature of wash water and the amount of detergent used. Logical, yes but— The amount of energy consumed by the water heater can be reduced as much as 50 per cent by use of a warm water setting for washing and cold water for rinsing. The reduction is even more drastic when cold water is used for the wash cycle as well. However, the wanner the water for most soils and fabrics, the cleaner the clothes (the colder the water, the more difficult it is to remove some soils). Habitual use of cold water could make the fabrics look dingy. If you replace clothing more Often, because of unacceptable appearance, cold water washing probably won’t save you much in the long run. If you want to try washing with cold water, for best results: Increase the amount of detergent used. This is especially true when clothes are heavily soiled, when you are washing a large load of clothes and when the water is hard. Increase the length of the wash cycle, or use a prewash or presoak cycle to provide extra washing action. Use auxiliary laundry products if you can afford the added cost, which should be somewhat less than the cost of energy. Use of chlorine bleaches whenever possible can help lower bacteria count as well as whiten clothes. If at all possible, use softened water. Water hardness hinders cleaning action even at high temperatures. Pretreat heavily soiled areas. A detergent paste or concentrated liquid detergent can do the trick if you wish to avoid the additional cost of one of the special pre-treatment products. Use good laundry procedures. Sort clothes carefully; do not overload the washer; and don’t wait so long to wash the garments that soil becomes set in the fabric. The temperature of cold tap water varies appreciably with geographic location and season. For acceptable results, the cold water should be at least 60 No stick Clear pfastic wrap is less likely to stick to itself on the roll if you keep it in the refrigerator.

degrees Fahrenheit; at lower temperatures cleaning effectiveness is negligible. Also, powdered detergents, especially carbonate-bu.it products sokt in areas where phosphate-built detergents are banned, generally don’t dissolve well in cold water. For best results, use a liquid product, or dissolve the powdered product in warm water before it is added tn the cold wash water. Fill the washer with cold-warm wabar, add the detergent solution, agitate for a few minutes and then add the soiled laundry. _ Use a cold water rinse or every load. It not only saves the cost of heating the rinse water, but also minimizes wrinkling of fabrics made of synthetic fibers or those finished with durable press finishes. Remember, hot water may lot be necessary to clean some w;ish loads adequately. Heavily soiled laundry may become dingy looking after several washes in cold water, and the money you save by using cold water be spent replacing the dingy looking garments. LOUISA'S
Dear Louisa, When my children were small I stayed at home aad took very good care of them although I had held a very good job before I was m;irried. I am glad I did that as the girls are in college now and we are very proud of them. My problem is this. Money has gotten scarce and I decided to take a put time job. My husband seemed to think it was a good idea at the time but, here of late, he seems to resent my working outside of the home. Heavens knows I worked much harder in the home when the children were small. He is always making remarks before others about bow important I feel about my job and downgrading what 1 do. Why do you think he is acting like this? Wife-Calif.

Answer: y Your husband was born in an era when the man was judged by his ability to provide for his family and when the wife was supposed to confine her duties to the home. Standards of living and attitudes as to marital relationships have changed a great deal. Marriage is considered a partnership between a man and woman, now-a-days, and there is no reason for your husband resenting the fact that you are bearing some of the household expenses. I think you did the right thing to stay with the children when they were small but there is no reason why you shouldn’t work now if you both need the money. Louisa.
