According to monthly reports issued by the Senate disbursing office, Quayle did not utilize his full allocation of staff payroll allowances either in 1981 or 1982. In addition, he returned $28,220 in official expense allowances designated for office operations during the two-year period. Quayle returned $200,890 in fiscal year 1981 and then returned $185,977 in fiscal 1982. In the first three months of the current fiscal year, Quayle has not used $34,964. - “These are times for austerity in government,” Quayle explained, “and economies should start with the operation of a Senator's office. " “During my first two years in the Senate, I have tried to practice frugality while working to assure effective service to Indiana without wasting taxpayers’ money,” Quayle stated. “This will continue tp be my practice in the years ahead,” he concluded. Under Senate rules, unused allowances cannot be used by a senator at the close of a fiscal year and they are subsequently returned to the general fund of the US Treasury.
