1983 — the year that is to be
By DAVID M. HUDSON Syracuse Pentecostal Church “Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended: but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before.” Phillippians 4:13 Ralph Waldo Emerson echos the sentiments in the writings of Paul to the church at PhiUipi when he said, Forget what is past. Finish each day and be done with it. You have done what you could; some blunders and absurdities no doubt crept in; forget them as soon as you can. Tomorrow is a new day; begin it well and serenely.” As this year comes swiftly to a close we stare at a year that yet is to be. We cannot but help reflect over the past year with its triumphs and disappointments, gladness and sorrow, and ponder that which mysteriously lies before us. We may wish we would have acted in different manners in some situations, taken the opportunity in others, and most importantly concluded the year with a sense of satisfaction that our living this year has been worthwhile and that our life has touched other lives in a kind and positive way. Surely there are words we would recall had we the power, expressions we would have made but are unable to now. With this in mind, the year that is to be can indeed be a different year. What lies behind us and what lies before us are tiny matters compared to what lies within us. Life is a mirror: if you frown at it, it frowns back; if you smile it returns the greeting. Suppose you had a bank account whereby 5t.440 was deposited into your account each day with one stipulation. That stipulation was that all of the money had to be spent in that one day. No amount could be carried to the next day to be added to that day and any amount left unspent would be taken out. What would we do? We would make every day count as regarding the spending of the amount.urour account each day. Well, we do have a bank like that and it’s called time. Each day we are given 1.440 minutes to be used that day. No amount can oe held over for the next day for it will be gone and a fresh 1,440 minutes will be given for that day May we spend it wisely! Time is one loan which given a grateful recipient cannot repay. It makes no difference how long we live, but what we do with the days allotted to us. The best thing about the future is that it only comes one day at a time

The most utterly lost of all days, is that in which we have not laughed Life will give you no more than you give it, therefore this past year should be a guidepost and not a hitching post. We always complain that our days are few and act as though there would be no end to them. How shall I allow this year's experiences to guide me for the year that is to be? Will I say that kind word, make that expression of love, feed that hungry one, ive the thirsty drink, take this stranger in, clothe that naked one. visit this sick one, care for this widow and visit these fatherless? Some people bring happiness wherever they go and some bring happiness whenever they go. In this year what is to be our greatest glory is not in never failing but in rising every time we fall. It is better to follow the straight and narrow path than to move in the best circles. Herbert Hoover once said, “Yesterday’s records can keep us from repeating yesterday’s mistakes.” It’s too bad Sodom had no Bible to warn them of a certain judgement for their heinous acts. It was too bad that the people of Bethlehem did not have someone to make them aware of who was really born in their midst Will history record our ignorance? Will the year that is to be conclude with our dismal failure to learn? “For a man’s life,” Jesus said, “consisteth not in the abundance of the things which he possesseth ... but rather seek ye the kingdom of God; and all these things will be added unto you. ' If we get our priorities in order. 1983 will be the best year of our life. Begin at once to live, and count each day as a separate life. Live neither in the past nor in the future, but let each day’s work absorb your entire energies and satisfy your widest ambitions. Our main business is not to see what lies dimly at a distance, but to do what lies clearly at hand. God has promised forgiveness to your repentance, but he has not promised tomorrow to your procrastination. An old Pennsylvania Dutch proverb goes, “Ve get too soon oldt, undt too late smart." Wear a cheerful countenance at all times and give every creature you meet a smile The world needs a smile, that waitress needs an encouraging word, the clerk must see the understanding in your eyes, the nurse must sense your kindness, the attendant must realize your patience and surely the list is endless I’m reminded of a stanza of a song that says, “If 1 can help

REV. DAVID M. HUDSON somebody as I travel along, then my living will not be in vain." Helen Keller gave us some good advise by saying, “Keep your face to the sunshine and you cannot see the shadow." A moment misspent is a jewel lost from the treasury of time. I leave you with these two thoughts: first, yesterday is but a dream and tomorrow is only a vision. But today, well-lived makes every yesterday a dream

Doctor, heal yourself
Jesus said, "Probably you will quote me that proverb, ’Physician, heal yourself — meaning. Why don’t you do miracles here in your home town like those you did in Capernaum?' "But I solemnly declare to you that no prophet is accepted in his own home town! "For example, remember how Elijah the prophet used a miracle to help the widow of Zarephath — Widmoyers host church open house Many members and friends of Hastings Island Chapel United Methodist Church attended a Christmas open house at Rev. of happiness and every tomorrow a vision of hope. Look well, therefore, to this year that is to be. Secondly, a quote from S. E. Kiser in Saint Andrews Cross: I will start anew this morning with a higher, fairarcreed; I will cease to stand complaining of my ruthless neighbor’s greed; I will cease to sit repining while duty’s call is clear; I will waste no moment whining, and my heart shall know no fear. I will look sometimes about me for the things that merit praise; 1 will search for hidden beauties that elude the grumbler's gaze; I will try to find contentment in the paths that I must tread; I will cease to have resentment when another moves ahead. I will not be swayed by envy when my rival’s strength is shown; I will not deny his merit, but I'll strive to prove my own; 1 will try to see the beauty spread before me, rain or shine — I will cease to preach your duty and be more concerned with mine.
a foreigner from the land of Sidon. There were many Jewish widows needing help in those days of famine, for there had been no rain for three and onehalf years, and hunger stalked the land; yet Elijah was not sent to them. "Or think of the prophet Elisha, who healed Naaman, a Syrian, rather than the many Jewish lepers needing help.” These remarks stung them to fury; and jumping up they mobbed Him and took Him to the edge of the hill on which the city was built, to push Him over the cliff. But He walked away through the crowd and left them. Then he returned to Caper naum, a city in Galilee, and preached there in the synagogue every Saturday. Here, too, the people were amazed at the things He said. For He spoke as one who knew the truth, instead of merely quoting the opinions of others as His authority. Luke 4:23-32

SORROW MAY SOMETIMES INTRUDE ON A SEASON OF JOY ZSSSt some time during your life or the life of someone you know, sadness may mar the festivities of the holiday season which was intended for joyous reunions and religious observances. It may take the form of a financial setback, the loss of a job, illness, a child in trouble, or the passing of a loved one. It is hoped that nothing of this nature will ever casta shadow over your holiday; but if it should, there is no better time to seek the corpfort of faith at your House of Worship. These trials remind us that we are all the children of God, and that His love and wisdom will enable us to cope with them. They also remind us of the true / significance of the holiday we observe, and fill ' us with a spiritual reawakening that we might not otherwise have attained during this season of joy; or at any other time.

The opra ain't over
(Th* following article was taken from th* MlHord United Methodist Church's monthly newsletter for November.) The words were painted in bright red on a banner hung over the wall near the 40-yard line of Texas Stadium, home of the Dallas Cowboys football team, on Sunday afternoon. The guys in silver and blue were struggling to stay in the race for the playoffs. So a dyed-in-the-wool Cowboy fan decided he would offer some back-home encouragement straight out of his country-western repertoire. He took paint, a big brush, and a roller . . . then splashed these words on a king-size bed sheet for all America to read: “The Opra Ain’t Over Til The Fat Lady Sings." It was his way of saying, “We’re hanging in there, baby. Don’t count us out. We have three games left before anybody can say for sure ... so we’re not giving up! The opra ain’t over. ” Sure is easy to jump to conclusions, isn’t it? People who study trends make it their business to manufacture out of their imaginations the proposed and inevitable end result. Pollsters do that, too. After a sampling of three per cent of our country, vast and stunning stats were predicted. Our worry increased. We are all informed that so-and-so will, for sure, wind up doing such-and-such. At times, it’s downright scary, and discouraging. Every once in a while, it’s helpful to remember times when those folks wound up with egg on their faces. Much to our amazement, the incredible often happens . . . Like when Wellington whipped Napoleon or Truman beat Dewey . . . and Washington won the Rose Bowl.. . like that time the earthquake didn’t hit.. . and England didn’t surrender . . . and Star Wars didn’t grab a fistful of Academy Awards ... and Hitler wasn’t the anti-Christ ... and the communists didn't take over America by 1980 . . . and Muhammad Ali could get beaten ... and a nation could continue on through the disillusionments of Viet Nam. White House and senatorial scandals, assassination attempts, energy crises and nuclear mishaps Yes, at many a turn we have all been tempted to jump to so-called obvious conclusions, only to be surprised by a strange curve thrown our way. God is good at that. When He does, it really encourages His people. Can you recall a few Biblical

' examples? A wiry teenager, armed with only a sling and a stone, whipped a giant over nine feet tall. Nobody would have predicted that. With an Egyptian army fast approaching and no possible way to escape, all looked bleak. But not so! Against nature and reversing the pull of gravity, a sea opened up and allowed the Hebrews to walk across. And how about the vast, indestructible wall around Jericho? Who would have ever imagined? Or a handful of very human disciples turning the world upside down? Anybody who would have been near enough to have witnessed any one of those predicaments would certainly have said, “Curtains... the opra is over! ” A lot of you who read this page are backed up against a set of circumstances that seem to spell the end. All looks almost hopeless. Pretty well finished. Apparently over. Maybe you need to read that again, underlining these words: seem to, almost, pretty well, apparently. Your adversary would love for you to assume the worst. He’d enjoy seeing you heave a sigh and resign yourself to depressed feelings that accompany defeat, failure, maximum resentment and minimum faith. After all, it’s fairly obvious you're through. Well, since when does-“fairly obvious” draw the curtain on the last act? It’s been my experience that when God is involved, anything can happen. The One who directed that stone in between Goliath’s eyes and split the Red Sea down the middle and leveled that wall around Jericho and brought His Son back from beyond takes delight in mixing up the odds as He alters the obvious and bypasses the inevitable. The opra ain't over. Watchnight at New Salem New Salem Church of the Brethren will hold a New Year’s Eve watch night service from 8 p.m. until midnight. Each family should take a dessert for a “dessert meal" for all who attend. Other events include a program by the church’s youth; the film, “Early Warning;” and a candlelight and prayer service. On Sunday evening, Jan. 2, at 6 p.m., a slide presentation will be given by Paul and June Schermerhorn. The Schermerhorns will tell about their son’s, Doug, work in Panama. Everyone is invited to attend both events.
