(Continued from page 1) Answers to the question on what the Lakeland School Board should do with the land that boused the Milford Junior High School varied. Twelve of those answering the question said a park should be built there and 10 said they should sell it. Both sell it and build a park were also given by persons who added reasons behind their answers. One said, “sell it to help pay their debt.” Another said, “sell it and use the money for future repairs.” Still another wants the school board to give it to the park board “It would make a nice park for the kids.” -jays one man. Dr Howard Hull and Lakeland School Board President Bill Little received votes as did Superintendent Don H Arnold. Comments on these ballots noted these men had power because of the hiring and firing of teachers
who mold the minds of the young people. Two said State Senator John B. Augsburger. One reader says, “No one — we are desperate for strong leadership!” A woman says her husband and a man says his wife. Another says Bud and Leonard Kline and their snowplows! The guy who runs the new Milford “gym,” says one. Another says Mike McConnell (body builder in Milford). And another says Nub Niles — he really “digs” in. We are happy to report that 48 of the 50 persons completing the form said yes to the question on belief in God. Only one said no and another said perhaps. Sincere A non-snoring person* They could improve the Mermaid Festival by holding It on Yom Kippurl "How can North Webster improve the Mermaid Festival?” was the question with 10 "smart” persons saying "stop having it!” Others commented on the carnival, the queen and the parade, with several adding good ideas. Readers want the carnival to be run for lesser prices. It should be bigger. Less expenisve and have more for kids, according to an 18-year-old. They should have larger arts and crafts show and sale. A cleaner carnival. And, the two 16-yearolds feel they should
hire a different carnival company. One female feels the queen shouldn't be so “fakey." One thinks they should have real mermaids. And, one thinks they should add talent to the pageant competition. A reader feels the parade should be closer together. Another thinks it should be shortened. Items on a positive note say the marching band festival should be bigger, the festival should have “real” hot air balloon rides; they should have big sports names or a big name entertainer. One woman thinks they should hold it in the winter for a change and another says, “it’s fine, as long as it stays in Webster it's great!” “They do such a good job I don't see how they could improve it,” says a woman and a bright male thinks they should hold it during Yom Kippur! Twenty-seven readers think Reaganomics is working with one adding, "since I still have a job Twenty said no, one said I'm not sure, one said partly yes and another said some What should the government do to get the country moving again? Forty-seven people gave 47 different answers. One person wanted to sell it. One wants to raise taxes and another wants to reduce taxes. Several want to get people back to work, each adding his or her suggestion on how it should be done. Mortgage and interest rates were the topic of some notes, one even wants long term loans. great. A formal ball. More fireworks. North Webster. More skating events. More people — more booths. A cross country skiing course. A snow sculpture contest. Water skiing. The above ideas were among the additions people would like to see at the Syracuse-Wawasee Winter Carnival. The weather was in the answer of many people in this contest. Warm weather said one, it’s a bore — dislike the cold, says another. Sun. Snow. 70 degree weather. Summer. Better weather — lots of snow. Heat. Warmth — palm trees. 90 degree weather and blue skies. You’ll have to flip a coin if you want to find the best place in the Lakeland area to get a hamburger. The Maryann received six votes and so did Three Flags. At home and Bud’s Bar each received four votes. Other places receiving more than one vote were the Syracuse Dairy Queen, South Shore, Louie’s Bar. Terry Iden’s and J. W.’s. Larry Harkleroad of Syracuse is the friendliest bartender in the Lakeland area He received seven votes. Bud and Sue Campbell of Milford received five votes between them and the only other bartender receiving more than one vote was Scrappy Graff of Syracuse. A lot of people did not answer this question. Os those who did one said, “I'm too young to know!” Another said he wasn't qualified to judge. A woman said, “Not acquainted with any Thank God!” And, a man said he had never been in a bar. One reader said her brother-in-law, another said they are all friendly as long as you are spending money and still another said it depends on the place of the party. An obviously funny reader wants to change the Flotilla by serving it with hashbrowns! Others think they should hold it in the winter, add ice skating and have it on land. Positive answers include more boats and a “Miss Flotilla” pageant. Add the North Webster Dixie Boat. Add sailboats. Make bigger and add queens. Have the boats go closer to shore. Add power boat races According to one reader school officials should consider adding basket weaving to the classes now offered at Wawasee High School. Three people want a class in Bible taught and three want Russian taught. A woman wants a cosmetology class at Wawasee (not Fairfield), another wants marine biology added with a field trip to the Florida reefs. The 3 R’s is the choice of one man. “How to set up a budget, write checks, etc. . . preparation for the ‘real world.’ says a reader. A man who’s over 65 says a course in respectfulness would be a good idea. A woman wants a class just for gifted students. Food businesses topped the list when readers were asked what business they would bring to the area if they had the power do bring one new business to the Lakeland community. A family restaurant. A nice restaurant with bar in Milford. Roller rink and Duff's. An outstanding restaurant. A 24-hour restaurant. Spanish’ restaurant. Donut shop with 27 flavors. Pizza Hut. Red Lobster. Taco Bell. McDonald's. Bakery. Arby’s. McDonald’s topped the list with four votes. A laundry received two votes. Other answers included one that would put people to work; a new medical clinic, new doctors; some productive business, not a service business; and more industries that stay. The average estimated amount to be spend this winter on heating a home is $137.54. The high is S4OO and the low is “SSO hopefully.” Eight people estimated it would cost them $l5O per month, with another saying between $l5O and S3OO. Two people said, “too much.” Our Florida participant said. “Very little — it’s warm here.” Two people said $l3O and came the closest to the average. Four people said S3OO. Other answers included: too, too much $50460 (wonder if this person wants to trade); “Mom says around S6O per month.” was written on the form of a 16-year old. I have no idea. One said “hope not. ” Ch* said, “no idea." And one bright man said, “depends on the weather.” All of the people who wanted to britM a new restaurant to the area said the best way to lose weight is to stop eating! Twenty people want to starve the dieters. Nineteen of the 23 answers from other people concerned eating less. Five said exercise. Five readers said to eat less, three of them added exercise. Two readers said proper dtet. One even suggested the dieter put a splint on his or her elbow. One wanted us to give her the answer and another said will power and prayer. Eggs came out on top of the favorite breakfast food with five persons listing eggs alone and 13 others naming eggs in one form or another or having then with something else Answers included: Poached egg on whole wheat toast. Bacon, eggs, toast. Omelets. Fried eggs. Eggs and toast. Ham and eggs. Eggs and sausage. Pancakes, hashbrowns, eggs and sausage. Only two women failed to answer this question. The most unusual was a woman who likes turnips for breakfast. One woman said, "anything as long as I don’t have to fix.” And. a man said, “anything that isn’t moving.” Wish I had time to fish noted one woman answering the question on the area lake that offers the best fishing. receiving more than one vote were Dewart, Waubee, Syarcuse and Webster. Crazy Corners, with nine, and Chicago Street and SR 13, with eight, both in Syracuse, led the voting for the area’s worst intersection. Other locations with more than one vote included Syracuse, SR 13 at Dairy Queen; 1250 N and SR 15 MUford; CR 33 and US 6 north of Syracuse; 1350 N and SR 15 by Purina ; 15 and 30 bypass; Pickwick Road — Side Street at DQ. Syracuse. Twenty people said blue was their favorite color — actually 19 said blue and one said pastel blue. Red was second with nine votes.
Other colors receiving more than one vote were orange, burgundy, lavendar. pink and brown. One male cast a vote for green and gold, proving himself a true Wawasee High School fan Rick and Melinda Pinney. received a total of eight votes between them to lead the list of friendly real estate agents. Right behind them were Phil Beer and Ernie Rogers. Others receiving more than one vote were OA Lambert, Tom Prickett, Sandi Beaty and Ivan Rineholt. Several people answered the question on being mayor for a day at Milford. Syracuse and North Webster with the same answer for all three towns. Those answers follow: One woman said, “I like all of these towns and am unfamiliar with their problems. I do think r snow removal can always be improved.”
“I’m not that conceited,” said an elderly gentleman. Another woman said, “Have a great big let bygones be bygones party and forget about power trips and who’s name is most popular.” “It’s OK” was written three times on one form. “One day couldn’t improve any of the three towns," said a woman. “Give me a year to try,” she concluded. The old junior high school was the subject of the most people who wanted to be mayor of MUford. They can — build a park on the old school site; make their new school for the entire corporation; or level the town or move the new school to the center of the corporation for all. Three people made good comments on the town. One said, “It’s perfect.” Another said, “I’d sleep all day! I like Milford.” And, yet another said, “It doesn’t need improving.” Two noted the water. One wants to burn it down. Positive comments included having garbage pick-up; ban the burning of leaves; make the Upper Crust bigger — it’s always full; Put on new store fronts; start a K-Mart; Encourage more business to locate (like restaurant); get rid of the old buddings; re-evaluate industrial needs of community; have a dance in the street; get new business; and build a McDonald's on SR 15. Four people think North Webster needs to be cleaned up and three want to change the theme of the town One thinks they should pave more streets and encourage industry. One wants to create a park for everyone Another wants to add manufacturing firms and a community center. Six people commented on the town hall at Syracuse. “Scrap the town hall issue and improve streets, etc. around town,” said one. “Put unemployed to work to build town hall — keep $600,000 in our town,” said another. “Decide
