DALE MENDENHALL I lay there alone in bed; my insides churning. My wife of just a few weeks had been there in bed, but she was there no longer As she later admitted, she was angry and knew she would not go to sleep She also knew I was tired. Therefore, she had gotten up to go downstairs for awhile to read, to calm herself and to let me sleep Neither one of us had intended for this to happen We love each other very much and so want the other to be happy. Frankly, we believe God was at work providentially to bring us together Yet, all does not go smoothly. With each of us bringing two children from a previous marriage into our new marriage, there are difficulties and sensitivities which might not otherwise emerge But they do surface as the two of us adjust to our wedded life together and as six of us adapt to being one family. Tonight had been one of those

times when the going had become rough As the evening had progressed, each of us could sense the other walled up behind a silent anger. Neither was understanding quite why. Having put the children to bed. we settled down for the evening with our bedroom television providing background noise as we attempted to discuss what this * barrier was between us But instead of dismantling that barrier, we strengthened our individual walls and shot bolts of anger at each other Now she was alone downstairs with her anger, and I was alone upstairs with mine. Sleep was impossible. 1, who had earlier spumed her attempt to smooth out our feelings, realized I loved her too much to allow this situation to continue and possibly worsen Besides, hadn't we promised each other that we would not go to sleep angry with each other’ So. I went downstairs Our protective walls were still up More angry bolts were fired. Then, silence set in. Eyes were quietly meeting Each confessed, “I love you.” The walls began coming down as we sat together and revealed

to each other how we had been hurt earlier in the evening. Neither one of us had earlier realized by what and how the other had been hurt unintentionally. We had each sensed the other constructing a wall of defense Now, as we poured our hurts out and confessed our fears and sensitivities, we came to know each other better and to love each other more. The relationship became stronger, the caring deeper. What does this have to do with Christmas? It’s a story of alienation and reconciliation. Through this experience we came to see and better understand Christmas as the story of alienation and reconciliation. As we’ve prepared during this Advent season for the coming of Christ in our lives, hopefully we have been recognizing and confessing the ways in which we have been separating ourselves from God and from each other. We can afford to do this and to ask God to overcome our alienation from him and from others because He is the great Reconciler. His love for us is so deep and His desire for reconciliation so strong that He dared

to be bom among us, to become as we are, to live before us, and to die for us. The reconciling love that comes down at Christmas can tear down the barriers we have erected between God and ourselves. He can free us from the need to build protective walls behind which we hide from others. He can liberate us from disguising our wounds behind volleys of anger He does this by healing our wounds and by making us whole. This wholeness, this salvation, means being reconciled to God and to each other. It means being freed to love. This Christmas is going to be special at our home. It’s the first Christmas together for my wife and me. It will be the first Christmas for the six of us as a family. And we are looking forward to it. It’s going to be a special Christmas, also, because through our new life together, God is teaching us about the reconciling work of Christ in our lives. Our prayer is that each of us this Christmas will experience the reconciliation made possible by Christ coming among us.

The program was the work of over 85 church members with the tree reaching 174 feet high from the floor of the platform and stretching to 174 feet at its widest point. It weighs about one ton. Close to 3.000 tiny lights and boughs from 12 fifteen-foot live Scott Pine trees tipped with artificial snow made up the beauty of the tree. Featured in the program were the secular sights and sounds of Christmas, the sacred sights and sounds of Christmas and the 35-voice choir singing from the tree. The tree is planned as an annual event and the reception to the presentation was so great that consideration is already being given to adding additional presentations next year to allow more people an opportunity to attend the program.
