For Tonda Yeager — > Forming new women's X-country teams becomingd habit

By GARY LEWIS For former Wawasee graduate Tonda Yeager, forming new women’s cross-country teams is becoming a habit. During he- days at Wawasee, she and Stacy Wall, who is attending Indiana State University on an athletic scholarship, started the first official crosscountry squad in conjunction with the boys’program. Since those early days of the Wall-Yeager combo, the crosscountry program for the girls has gotten better. And it might have reached its apex this season with a seventh place finish at the state meet. Although those days at Wawasee are behind her now, she has gotten herself into the same routine at her new home — at Winona Lake’s Grace College. Answers To Sports Quiz 1. Dave Rimington . When Tonda arrived at Grace, the college did not have much of a program for the women Tonda and coach Ken Taylor recruited nine participants, enough to field a team to run a schedule of invitationals. Much like her team at Wawasee, the girls squad traveled with the men’s team during the season and the two teams formed a strong friendship. That friendship is what Tonda says she liked the best about her season at Grace. “The feeling between the men and women... we’re all together and supporting each other, encouraging each other, ’ ’ she said. Slowed by an injury to her knees in the early part of the season, she came on strong in the second half. Although she admits that next season she ll probably run two, or two-and-a-half minutes faster, her time was good enough to make the history books at Grace. “She is the first person ever, male or female, to qualify for the nationals,'' said coach Taylor. She made the trip to the University of Wisconsin Parkside campus for the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics national meet

November 20 after finishing seventh in the district 21 (Indiana) NAIA race with a time of 20:30. Unlike her high school days, where the girls ran a 3000-meter course, at college the women run a 3.1 mile course. Out of 280 runners, Tonda finished a strong 137th at Wisconsin. After her injury, “It was like starting all over,’’ said Taylor. “With her injury, you were unable to see the improvement. You need a heavy dose of running,’’he said. Her lack of off season mileage hurt her chances of getting better times, Tonda said. “I didn't have very good mileage at all. When my knees started to hurt, I would stop.” , It would seem the transition from high school competition to college would have been a easy one for Tonda to make when one takes into consideration her history book achievements during her first season. But Tonda said the competition is a lot tougher at the small-college level. “It is a lot tougher here The nationals were a lot tougher than even the state meet,” she said. Tonda's rise to state prep prominence got better just about every year. In the first-ever girls’ cross country meet in 1979, she finished 16th in the state in a nonIHSAA sanctioned meet. In 1980, she finished 21st in another nonsanctioned meet and in the first IHSAA state meet in 1981, she finished 19th in the team scoring, 34 th overall. Her first season at Grace was a learning one for Tonda. “I learned patience with my injury and I look forward to really going JrS TONDA YEAGER

out and working harjd next season.” Being so close to home has its advantages and its disadvantages, she said. “It’s kind of different sometimes because it feels like such a convenience to go home,” she said. But her selection of Grace involved more than just geography. “I went to Grace for the academics and to provide for my spiritual needs,” she said. She kept tabs on Wawasee’s success this season, following Grace Stichter and the rest of the Lady Warriors to Indianapolis. She has a deep respect for Indiana coach-of-the-year nominee Jerry Minton's accomplishments. “He is a super coach. He is going to always keep something going there,’’ she said. When she and Stacy Wall went together to form the team at Wawasee, they concentrated on making the season special with regular devotions before each

meet. At Grace, those kinds of activities go on all the time and she really enjoys them. "In high school, not everyone was a Christian. It's kind of neat here," she said. She will be working hard on running during the off season and when spring comes around she wants to go out for the track team. There’s only one problem with Tonda’s spring plans, though. Grace currently doesn’t have a girls’ track squad. “It’s going to take a lot of motivating to get people out for the team,” she said, since a track team requires more people than a cross country team ... but even with that small problem, you can probably count on an announcement by the Grace College Athletic Department for a new athletic program this spring. That is, if Tonda has anything to say about it.

RON SPUNAR

This week’s Mail-Journal “Athlete of the Week” scored 30 points in a win against Triton and last week demonstrated his defensive prowess with a number of blocked shots in the Warriors win against Columbia City. Ron Spunar, all 6-10 of him, clogged up the middle effectively last week against the Eagles causing much frustration for any Columbia City chances for offensive access. Ron is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Ron Spunar, r 3 box 230 Syracuse.
