Warrior girls undefeated

North Wood for granted. No Wawasee girls' varsity basketball team had won a ball game at the Panther gym. Wawasee came away with the victory 61-38. The contest was close until the final period when Wawasee blew the game open and the Lady Warriors* fine defensive game began to pay off. In the third and fourth periods Wawasee had some excellent defensive plays. Maude Packer played a fine fourth quarter for the Lady Warriors, even though

she was playing with four personal fouls. Grace Stichter led Wawasee’s scoring efforts, with 14 points. Carol Walker came across with 12 points for Wawasee and the game was sparked in the final quarter with the addition of sophomores Anita Swope and Sandy Payne from the Warrior bench. The North Wood girls scored well in the first quarter and the score see-sawed until midway through the first period when Carol Walker and Grace Stichter gave Wawasee the lead which they retained throughout the game. In a physical first quarter, Wawasee cpme out with the 14-9 lead and ended the second quarter with a seven-point lead, 24-17. Cindi Schwartz and Tammy Gessinger from North Wood each scored a field goal in the third period to cut the Wawasee lead to three. Packer was called for a , foul and Tammy Shepherd brought North Wood within one. Sellers scored two consecutive field goals for Wawasee and the Lady Warriors again took a fivepoint lead. At the end of the third quarter Wawasee led 33-25. Wawasee quickly pulled ahead in the final period and gained a steady lead. Several of the Lady Warriors from the bench saw action in the fourth quarter. North Wood now has a 2-5 record overall, with Wawasee 16 0 for the season. Wawasee shot only 11 from the charity stripe, all in the second half, and hit seven of those attempts. The Panther girls shot .20 free throws, hitting 10. Wawasee's junior varsity team was also able to retain its undefeated status. The game, however, was much closer than the varsity contest, with Wawasee winning 26-25. The final points of the game for Wawasee were scored by Sandy Payne. The Lady Squires were the first team this season to obtain a third quarter lead over the Warrior girls but Wawasee recovered and came away with a 54-45 victory. Turnovers were a problem for Wawasee in the first half and several of the Lady Warriors spent time on the bench because of foul trouble. According to Coach Brannock, who had previously realized that Manchester was a tough ball club, “These (Wawasee girls) are class players, they were down and fought back. *' Grace Stichter led Warrior scoring, with 17 points and Barb Orpurt had 17 for the Manchester girls. Wawasee was called for 13 fouls in the first half, with Manchester committing only four. Wawasee took an early lead in the first quarter and led throughout the period. At the end of the first quarter they led. 16-11. Wawasee's girls got into foul trouble in the second quarter and Rhonda Hidy put Manchester in the lead, with two free throws. The Lady Squires gained a fivepoint edge, but Christy Speicher scored one and Anita Swope and Grace Stichter each made a field goal, and the first half ended with the score tied at 25. Orpurt and Linda Sittier led the Manchester girls’ efforts in the third quarter, as they scored six quick points to put the Squires in the lead 31-25. Three consecutive field goals by Grace Stichter tied the score at 31. A long field goal by Cindy Grossnickle put Manchester back in the lead. Wawasee lost the ball, but Marcia Sorensen stole it back and another field goal by Stichter again gave the Lady Warriors a two point lead. Dee Stump tied up Orpurt. Wawasee got the tip. Hidy fouled Carol Walker, who hit two free throws, and Wawasee went into the fourth quarter leading 35-33 Manchester never regained the lead, and at one time in the final period the Ladv Warriors led by 11. Maude Packer led Wawasee’s rebounding efforts, with 10. Strong Warrior defense in the final quarter may have been the turning point of the game, as the

girls shut Manchester out under the boards, and walked away with the nine point victory. The junior varsity Warriors also came away from Manchester undefeated, after facing a determined team of Lady Squires. At halftime the Lady Warriors led 28-13, but in the final period Manchester rallied and came within five points. Wawasee hung on to win the game by a score of 30-22 and retain its undefeated status. Olympics bowling team representing the Cardinal had 14 participants in the Indiana ’ Bowling Tourney where they won six first place awards out of 1,741 contestants. Mrs. Burcham pointed out that Special Olympics emphasises teaching participants what they can do, not what they cannot do. "X During the next year, Kiwanis Clubs throughout the world will assist with the Special Olympics in any way possible. Anyone wishing to help with the program in Kosciusko County may contribute funds, assist with transportation, coach teams, help with local events, or provide T-shirts for the teams.
