Wysong's new faces show promise

By GARY LEWIS There's been some new faces playing the roundball at Wawasee High School laMy and the new-look has already won the respect of many of uie home folks in this still young boys basketball season' With three games under their belts, the Warriors have carved a satisfying 2-1 mark. “We’ve got a group of fighters so far.’ says coach John Wysong. “It’s fun to play when you fight." The Warriors have done their fair share of fighting in their first three outings. Last week, Wawasee went down to a strong Mishawaka squad. The final difference gave no indication of bow clo*e the game really was. Wawasee had the Cavemen down by six In quarter before yielding to Mishawaka’s home stretch scoring spree. (See related article beiow Wawasee’s next two upcoming contests this week end will be a big test for the Warriors. Wysong believes his squad learned a lot against Mishawaka... but the Warriors won't have the luxury of facing two weak sisters to try some of their new knowledge on this week end Wysong's crew will travel to Concord for a 7:30 p.m. game against the Minutemen (J.V. game is slated for 6.15) Friday and the following night will play in the first contest of a scheduled basketball doubleheader at Elkhart's Northside gymnasium. (Concord will battle Central in the second game.) The J.V. game is to begin at 5 p.m. with the varsity contest immediately following. Quick Teams Both Concord and Memorial feature quick, pressing teams with Memorial probably being the quicker of the two. So for Wysong. handling this pressure will be the big key this week end What we re going to need to do is handle pressure. Both teams press the whole game and really press well, with Elkhart Memorial being one of the quickest teams, if not the quickest ’ team, in the state." For NLC-foe Concord, 6-3 senior Brant Kennedy and 6-3 senior Mark Staggs will probably be the mainstays of an otherwise balanced scoring attack. Look for 5-8 senior Wayne Barranca and 5-10 Dick DeLeon as the floor generate. Wysong and a few of his players got a look at Concord Saturday at Warsaw where the Minutemen dropped a 64-60 suzler Concord s really a fine basketball team. They’ve got a lot of people who can do things for them," he said. The Warriors will even have a tougher test against Memorial Saturday. The Crimson Chargers were 2C 5 a year ago. becoming one of Plymouth's victims during the Pilgrims storybook march to the state championship in the Elkhart Regional finale. A 5-11 senior guard. Walter Lewis, had some great reviews last season. The quick Lewis will be joined by another quick sharpshooter in the backcourt. 5-9 senior Tommy Jones. “We've got to take good care of the ball. We need to keep them to one shot if we can." Wysong explained /The Warriors seemed a little cautious last week and Wysong wants the offense to be more aggressive this week end.

MISHAWAKA - Mishawaka played extremely well in the last six minutes of the ball game and managed to pull away from the Warriors 69-59 in the Cavemen s homeopener Friday, Nov. 26. Mishawaka had streaks of eight and 10 points ina row in the fourth stanza, outscoring Wawasee 20-8. The Cavemen simply hit some crucial shots that the Warriors couldn’t in the final minutes. Wawasee owned a six-point lead early in the fourth but when Jon Vitaniemi fouled out with 6:41 to play, the Warriors margin quickly disappeared. Wawasee’s Kevin Smith made one of his twisting, turning lay-ups with 6:18 to go for a 55-49 lead when Mishawaka’s first eight point scoring flurry began. The Warriors were led by Brian Waite with 16. Vitaniemi and Smith had 15 and senior

center Ron Spunar netted 10. Mishawaka’s Tom Gady led the winners with 22. followed by Gary Hixenbaugh and Tom Magnuson’s 10 tallies. Magnuson hit three consecutive baskets in the final 1:37 after the Warriors tied the score at 59. Wysong went with the press in an attempt to get back in the game The press never worked as Mishawaka connected on eight unanswered points to assure the deceiving 10-point winning margin In addition to Vitaniemi’s foul problems, Spunar played yrith four fouls most of the second half. The timid Spunar had a poor showing in the rebound department with only six boards. The Cavemen took a 22-12 lead early in the second quarter after the Warriors took command early. Smith

But one thing the Warriors cannot afford to do. however, is to become too reckless. “You can’t be reckless... you can’t be careless. They’ll destroy us if we pass the ball carelessly." A big dent in Wysong's offensive plans has been the ailing Kim Zurcher. The 5-9 junior showed some promise during prese«Hou practice drills and Wysong hoped to move him into his guard rotation as either a starter or strong reliever. Zurcher’s future has been an off-and-on again proposition all season long. Three doctors have examined him and given him two diagnoses — one a hamstring pull, and another a back problem. "It takes away a clever player from us,” said Wysong. Zurcher has been dressing with the varsity and played some but has not been at full strength. “It really has hurt us. ” Wysong added. "It would help if we knew if we do or don’t have him .. it's been hard on him and hard onus." . f The latest doctor prescribed a week’s rest for Zurcher and Wysong won’t dress the junior this week end. / So the Lewis-Jones combo.could give Wawasee fits without a healthy Zurcher to take up the slack. “They are all quick. All they do is switch on you like crazy." Against both teams. Wysong expects a more physical game - / with the battle under the boards being especially crucial. ; Wysong’s second battle cry this week end will be defensive rebounds. Improvement Needed Ron Spunar has showed some vast improvement from last season but Wysong is counting on his 6-10 pivotman to continue improving. Spunar managed only six rebounds against the Cavemen and he'll need to at least double that total if the Warriors are to be effective. • Wysong hopes his team will be getting more movement inside on offense and he plans on packing his man-to-man defense inside. As always. Wysong will continue to stress the fundamentals of the game knowing full well his team will not be in mid-season form “We've got to improve on our passing fundamentals. We need to know when we do have the opportunity to go (with the break) and when we don't have the opportunity, we need to play our offense and make them play defense." . Jon Vitaniemi has played extremely well in the last three contests. In fact, when the 6-2 junior fouled out late in the contest last week, the roof started to cave-dn for the Warriors. He led all of the Wawasee rebounders last week with nine boards. Starter Jeff Atwood had a calf injury and may not have been at full strength. The starting five — Smijh. Walls, Spunar, Vitaniemi and Atwood — have logged the most playing time in the first three outings But Wysong has used his bench considerably. For example, Joel Rhoades came in for Vitaniemi against Mishawaka. “Rhoades gained a lot of experience against Mishawaka,” said Wysong “With many individuals. I'm impressed,” said Wysong. But with many others, improvement is still needed. Four starters have been doing most of the scoring for Wysong He would like to spread the scoring burden to five or sjx. “Our balance is pretty decent. We need to get that fifth guy to score. ”

led the comeback, scoring six of his 15 points. Wawasee never trailed by more than four points the rest of the way until the fateful fourth quarter. The third stanza featured Spunar connecting on a three point play and another basket inside to put Wawasee on top 40-39 Smith led the way again for the Warriors second comeback effort, scoring seven points to lead the rally which ended with Wawasee on top 5549 Mishawaka made the evening a two-game sweep against the Warriors, winning the junior varsity contest 4140. Jim Evans was high man for Wawasee with 11 Both Wawasee teams own a 2-1 record going into their con-ference-opener at Concord this Friday. WAWASEE <»> -Smith 6-8
