Taxpayers who do not have copies of their previous years’ tax returns and need to request them from the Internal Revenue Service can expect a six-week wait to receive a copy of forms, the Internal Revenue Service said. This wait is due principally to the large number, approximately 1.8 million, of copy requests expected by the IRS this year. Some of the reasons why taxpayers may need to request copiesof previous years’ returns are for income averaging, student loans and mortgage purposes. Taxpayers needing previous years’ tax returns should prepare a Form 4506. "Request for Copy of Tax Form," for each return requested. The forms should be sent to the service center where the return was filed. With the increasing demand for past tax records, the best way to avoid delays in the future, the IRS said, is keep previous years' tax return as part of permanent tax records.
