Pilgrim journey tothe Holy Land Our feet shall stand within thy gates, O Jerusalem':Psalm 122:2
Fourth in a series By BUD AND JERI SEELY Saturday, Oct. 23, the Jewish sabbath, we started the day on foot, walking to the old city. Yuhuda. our guide, told us the walls around the old city are 400 years old. We entered through Herodes Gate or the Flower Gate which was only a few blocks from our hotel. Our first stop was at the Pool of Bethesda which lay not far from the temple courtyard. It was here that Jesus healed a paralytic on the sabbath (John 5:1-18). Near the pool is Saint Anne’s Church, built by the Crusaders on a site which one tradition holds was the home of Joachim and Anne, parents of Jesus’ mother, Mary At another church we saw games on stones in the floor. They date to the time of Christ and are believed to have been made by the soldiers who entertained themselves as they waited This is the Church of Condemnation and is built on the place where it is believed Jesus took up his cross Walking down the Via Dolorosa, we viewed some of the stations of the cross, on our way to Calvary. Entering the old temple area, we saw for the first time up close the beauty of the Dome of the Rock which is built on the area where the temple had stood This is the land David purchased. This is where Solomon built his temple This is Mount Moriah It is here Abraham brought his son. Isaac, to offer him as a sacrifice i Genesis 212:2) The Western Wall, or wailing wall, was the next stop on our journey This wall is the only remaining wall of the temple and is a place of worship for the Jews who will not go into the old temple area for fear of entering the Holy of Holies, a place which has been lost through the ages Because it was the sabbath we were not allowed to take photos Some of us did walk up to the walls and see. the thousands upon thousands of prayers which have been written on paper, rolled as tight as possible and placed in the cracks between the stones 1 So they took Jesus, and he went out, bearing his own cross, to the place called the place of a skull, which Is called in Hebrew Golgotha — John 19:17.

Golgotha, Hebrew. Calvary, Latin. Both mean skull. There are different views relative to the location of Calvary. One is that the site is marked by the Church of the Holy Sepulchre which is within the walls of the city, the other is Gordon s Calvary. We were to visit both while in Jerusalem and when we think of the resurrection our memories will be of Gordon’s Calvary as the site better meets the conditions set forth in the Bible. Gordon's Calvary is a hill on the north side of the city about 250 yards north of the Damascus Gate and is outside the wall. If the Church of the Holy Sepulchre is the place where Christ was crucified it will be necessary to prove that it was outside the walls of Jerusalem in the time of Christ —a task which apparently is impossible. In 1883 an English general by the name of Gordon saw the skull. Excavation reveiled a garden and a tomb nearby. Today the area is maintained much the u ay it would have looked 2,000 years ago. Here in the quietness, overlooking the tomb, our small group sang. “Up From the Grave He Arose ' Leaving the tomb area we boarded our bus for a visit to the Shrine of the Book where many of the Dead Sea Scrolls are on display These scrolls were written between 100 BC and AD 100 and contain many Old Testament books which confirmed Bible accuracy. Later in the afternoon we stopped at a model of the city of Jerusalem, built on a one-fiftieth scale Our next stop: Hebron, called Kinath arba in Genesis 23:2 and Joshua 14:15. For a long time Abraham lived here (Genesis 13:18) and David made it his capital until taking Jerusalem (11 Samuel 2:1-4; 5:5; and I Kings 2:ID. Soon we found ourselves at the Cave of Machpelah where Abraham. Isaac and Jacob are buried with their wives. Sarah, Rebecca and :,Leah. Rachael, Jacob's favorite wife, is said to have been buried near Bethlehem The walls surrounding the area are 2,000 years old Because it belongs to the Moslems and it was their time for prayer, we were not allowed to go into the area which has been built over the cave. This is tKe largest ciTy in the south and is famous for glass We visited a small shop and watched

We could not leave without purchasing a sample of his work and could not make up our minds whether to purchase a green vase or a blue one so we purchased one of each! Upstairs a group of boys about 10 to 12 years old were painting pottery with speed and skill almost unbelievable. On the return to Jerusalem the bus passed through Bethany, home of Mary and Martha and

A PLACE CALLED GOLGOTHA — This is the hill seen by Gordon and does indeed have the look of a skull. It is outside the walls, of old Jerusalem and was on a main road, thus fits all of the descriptions given in the Bible for Golgotha or Calvary.

Lazarus. It was frequently visited by Jesus (Mark 14:3, Matthew 21:17) and it was here Jesus restored to life his friend Lazareth who had been dead for some days (John 11:43). “ Sunday was a special day in the Holy Land as we gathered for services at the Inn of the Good Samaritan.

Because we were scheduled for tours on Sunday we did not have a chance to attend a new church we had hoped to visit in Jerusalem. Instead we found ourselves boarding the bus at 8 a.m. and heading for the Dead Sea. At the place where the Inn of the Good Samaritan once stood (a point where travelers from Jerusalem to Jericho rested) we stopped for a time of worship. Sitting on rocks, looking towards Jerusalem in the distance, we listened to the same lesson that would be taught later in the morning in thousands of Sunday School classes in the United States and then held what has become a very special communion service. Our worship over, we continued, driving past the monestry of John the Baptist which is located in the area where John baptized people in the Jordon River. We were on our way to Qumran. It was at Qumran that the Dead Sea Scrolls were found. Here once again, looking across the Dead Sea. we could see Mount Nebo. A short time later we found ourselves on a cable car going up the mountain to Masada. While Masada is not mentioned in the Bible, it is here one finds magnificent ruins of the fortress that would prove to be the last stand of the Judean revolt against Rome in 70-73 AD. Masada's remoteness from human habitation and difficult approach made it an excellent fortress. We did not realize before our visit that Josephus Flavius, a Jewish historian who changed his name from Joseph ben Matitahu. was one of the leaders of the revolt. He later surrendered to the Romans, changed his name and witnessed the events at Masada. His account of these events are.found in his “Jewish Wars’’ and are used in the booklet published by the National Parks Authority. We ll not say what we paid for our copy of “Josephus" which was purchased in Indiana several years ago and contains not only the “Jewish Wars" but the "History of the Jews,’’ but we purchased a copy of the Masada booklet, complete with map, for 20 cents. The well-appointed fortress contained just about everything a city of that day would need. Masada had a Northern Palace and a Western Palace. It had its own water system and 15 long store-rooms. There were public

Roman .baths and swimming pools. Masada had a synagogue and many other buildings, the remains of which are being restored. Until the fourth or fifth century Masada lay waste, then Christian monks visited the ruins. A Byzantine church was built, then the fortress was vacated and it was lost. It was the 19th century before it was discovered again. In 1807 it was identified as Zif mistakenly. It wasn't until 1838 it was seen from Engeddi and identified correctly. It was not climbed until 1842 and while digs were held, nothing serious was done until 1955-56 when a map was made. In the early 1960 s a very thorough excavation took place, lasting 11 months. Excavations are still underway. Leaving Masada we journeyed to Engeddi for’ lunch at an area overlooking the Dead Sea. It was at Engeddi that David hid from Saul. Following lunch many in our group took off their shoes and socks and went wading in the sea. Others manned cameras and still others collected stones. In the Bible the Dead Sea is called the Salt Sea and the Sea of the Plain (Genesis 14:3; Deuteronomy 3:17; Joshua 3:16). It is nearly 50 miles long and nine to 10 miles wide and has a level of about 1.300 feet below the Mediterranean Sea. Its saltiness is about four times that of the ocean.

The Dead Sea forms part of the Great Rift Valley and is the lowest water surface on earth. It is fed by the Jordan River and . has no outlet. Magnesium chloride gives the sea its bitter taste and calcium chloride gives people entering the water an oily feeling. The Dead Sea is’ important to the economy of both Jordan and Israel as a source of potash, bromine, gypsum, salt and other chemical products, which are extracted inexpensively. The Dead Sea is also fast becoming a winter health resort area. Jericho is a place of green in the middle of the desert. It is remembered for its tumbling walls and its sycamore tree. Leaving Engeddi we're soon in Jericho, the city of palm trees (Joshua 3:13). Every Sunday School child can relate the story of how the walls of Jericho came tumbling down. (Joshua 5:13-6:26) and the story of Zacchaeus and the sycamore he climbed (Luke 19:1-10). We visited the archaeological excavations of the old city and viewed a tower between 7,000 and 9.000 years old. Monday was a free day, the events of which many of us found to be just as memorable as those which had been planned for us. Women the world over like to shop and those in our group are no different. Yuhuda told us if we were looking for a department store we should go to Hamashbir where we would find everything from clothing to groceries. He further instructed when asking directions to pronounce it, "too much beer.” This we did and found ourselves at one of

Jerusalem’s leading department stores minutes before it opened Monday morning. Returning to our hotel with our purchases, many of them Christmas gifts, (the men in our group spent time drinking coffee in the store’s restaurant), we set off on foot for the Tomb of the Kings. Here are well preserved old tombs. However, it is believed that only one rich woman, and no kings, was ever buried in the tombs. It was here we met and made friends with a group of Israeli soldiers on a holiday. Several in our group had photos taken with members of their unit and we promised to send them a copy. They were a happy group and showed no signs of the events underway in Lebanon. Many did not speak English but we soon learned smiles and handshakes are universal. That afternoon while some rested for the coming trip to Egypt others of us set out for the old city again. We sought to retrace the steps of Jesus, visit the market place and the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. We returned too to the wailing wall for the photos we were not allowed to take on the sabbath. It was in the old city we added another memory to dur trip — we were caught in the first rain of the winter. On foot and several blocks from our hotel, with umbrellas still in our suitcases, we had no choice but to wait in the small shops of the marketplace until the rain stopped. All to soon it was time to pack, time to say goodbye .to Jerusalem. But many of us had already decided we would return one day for another visit to this very special city!
