Jackets defeat Cougars
The Syracuse Yellow Jackets seventh and eighth grade boys' basketball teams entertained the Central Noble Cougers last
Tuesday. Nov. 23. and ended up with twc wins. The games, however, were entirely different in style The seventh grade won
Freshmen topped by Manchester Coach Galen Hershberger’s freshman basketball team lost its second game in a row toa strong Manchester squad 48-35. Leading scorers for the 1-2 Warriors were David Kistler (10) and Jeff Taylor (8). Kistler was also the leading rebounder with 10 boards. A frustrated Hershberger said his team "didn’t play with intensity.” In the first half, Manchester beat the Warriors to the boards to take an early lead. The rebounding picked up in the second half, but it was too late. "Defense and rebounding was our biggest problems” the coach said. But the squad still has 16 games to go on their schedule and if the Warriors can find some success before Christmas they could have a winner. "We have a good chance to be .500 by Christmas.” said Hershberger. Meanwhile, he plans "to keep going with what we have.” The freshman "B” team was a 27-13 loser to Manchester. Leading scorers for the Warriors were Craig Cobbum with six and Travis Reiff with five. Cobbum was the leading rebounder with four. The “B” team has yet to dent the win column, dropping their third straight. The next game for the Warriors is Tuesday, Dec. 7, when they host Fairfield.
35-16 and the eighth grade 35. The seventh grade team jumped to an early lead and enlarged it during each quarter. By halftime, eight Syracuse players had entered the game and scored. Coach Caz Szynal emptied his bench in the second half and still the Yellow Jackets increased their lead. Mike Cannon led all scorers with 15 points. Mike Meek and Jack Bond played well and led the defense which held the Cougers under 20 points for the game. The final score was 35-16. Eighth Grade The eighth grade game was a seesaw affair from start to finish. Syracuse was never behind more than one point but could not pull away. Tim Mangas again led the Yellow Jackets with 15 points. Todd Roberts added 11 points and he and Mangas snared 21 rebounds between them. Either team could have won the game at the free throw line as the Cougers hit only four of 14 while Syracuse made three of 15. The players were treated to excellent officiating with Marion Acton and John Elliott working the game. Both Yellow Jacket teams have a 2-0 season with the next contest at West Noble. Tuesday. pfcriNTS FOR [ | OMEOWNER.S Protecting Yourself From Burglars You can reduce the chance of your home becoming one of the 500,000 suburban property crimes that occur each year. Here, from the experts at ADT, a leading manufacturer of home protection systems, are some helpful tips: • To discourage burglars, make your home appear to be occupied all the time. When you’re away, be sure your grass will be cut or the snow shoveled. • Cut off delivery of mail and newspapers. • Leave a car in the driveway, if you can. Or scatter a few inexpensive children’s toys around your place. • Let trusted neighbors and your local police know about vacations and other long absences. An interesting 20-page booklet on how to keep your home safe has been prepared with the assistance of a reformed burglar. It outlines some simple steps you can take to reduce the chance of your home being burglarized. Called “Safe At Home,” it’s available free by writing to: Richard Simonetti, Manager, Residential Security, ADT, One World Trade Center, New York, N.Y. 10048.
