and holds school, pool and conference records for his diving expertise. Between the four of them, they own seven school records. Wysong. Crum and Boyer were members of the 400 free relay team that finished 12th in the state meet. The school record list begins with Crum’s 100 backstroke, Wy so ng's 200 and 500 freestyle and includes Boyer's 50 and 100 freestyle efforts. Wysong finished as the conference and sectional champion in the 200 freestyle. “They have all been lettermen since they were freshman. They will carry the load for the team, " said Caldwell Caldwell believes a realistic goal for his club, taking into account a rugged northern Indiana schedule, would be 14-2. “Against Goshen and South Bend Riley, we'll be looking for an upset. " said Caldwell Swimming can be a predictable sport, since everyone is aware of the times. Against some teams, even a club's best time will result in a loss. That doesn’t bother Caldwell, who believes in getting his team to do their very best at each meet “We re going to shoot to win the conference meet, we’re going to go for it" “M.T.X.E. is our motto." said Caldwell. M T.X.E is a phrase Caldwell picked up from the Memphis State basketball team which stands for mental toughness and extra effort. “We meet a half-hour before the meet as a team in a dark room for a visualization exercise.” said Caldwell This progressive relaxation program has been well received by the team members. It involves going through every step of their particular stroke, trying to imagine how their entire body will be responding. Knowing what the team can do before a meet can be a handicap for Caldwell at times. “I tell the kids, (to) make them beat your
best times," said Caldwell. Other team goals, like being a good sportsman at all times, are also important. “We want to come out of every meet with something out of it.” Every meet, though, presents a challenge to someone on the team, he said. "There’s always one good swimmer on a team.” Other returnees Caldwell will be counting on this season are juniors Brad Overmeyer at breast stroke; Brett Hite at butterfly; Benji Reed at backstroke; and diver Phil Zachery. Reed finished sixth in the NLC at his backstroke event and Zachery was sixth at diving in the conference clash. Several seniors who have never lettered wall return this winter Bob Green, Rob Green, Kenny Homing and Bill Dixon will be vying for a letter sweater this season. Bob Galloway and Todd

Smith, both juniors should also figure in the scoring along with Jon Shoemaker and Rob Jenson. Caldwell will have two freshmen. John Morgan and Carl Roush, coming up from the swim club program. Roush holds an age-group record. Sophomore Gary Miller will be a returning diver this season. “We have a talented bunch of kids,” says Caldwell. “They are a nice bunch of boys. Nobody’s an outsider on the team,” he added. Swimmers are special athletes, said Caldwell. With two practices after school, one “optional” in the morning, and another when the Warriorette swimmers finish practice, the swimmers have to make a big sacrifice to compete. These sacrifices breed special friendships. “Because swimming is so hard, they tend to stick together ... it's kind of like war, when they come out of swimming they come out lifetime buddies.”
