Pilgrim journey tothe Holy Land Our feet shall stand within thy gates,O Jerusalem': Psalm 122:2

Second in a series By BCD AND JERI SEELY There appears to be no love lost between the Moslem nation of Jordan and the Jewish nation of Israel. Both our guide and our bus driver told us they had relatives in Jerusalem and Hebron but had not seen them for several years as they were not allowed to cross the border for a visit and then return to Jordan. The Jordanians, in fact, had nothing good to say about the Israelies We would soon find the reverse true in Israel with the West Bank still being the point of contention We left our hotel at 7:15 a m for the border but found we needed to fall back on the fruits of the spirit found in Galations 5:22. one in particular, patience! Our drive .took us through the mountains of Giliad We saw the Dead Sea and Mount Nebo in the distance as we traveled to the Allenby Bridge and our tnp across the Jordan River to Israel Even though it is only a short distance between Amman and the Israelie border, it was 11:50 a m before we finally found ourselves boarding a bus in Israel, having passed four checkpoints and Israelie customs The sycamore tree that Zacchaeus climbed still stands in Jericho Our first stop, Jencho for lunch and a drive past an old sycamore tree said to be the very one that Zacchaeus climbed to see Jesus i Luke 19.1 10 ). Our guide, Yehuda Guy, told us we were on our way to Tiberias and the Sea of Galilee but would return to Jericho later Jencho is 60 miles by land from the Sea of Galilee The Jordan River travels 160 miles along the same route as it twists and turns its way from the Sea of Galilee to the Dead Sea Enoute we passed the Mount of Temptation Matthew 4' In many areas of the valley they are now using irrigation to "make the desert bloom “ Crops grown here are harvested in mid winter and the fruits, vegetables and flowers are sent to Europe. Yehuda, who was born in England and moved to Israel 30

years ago, told us the area we were traveling in had been returned to Israel after the War of 1967. Between 1954 and 1967 the West Bank had been part of Jordan. It is now under the Israelie Army control. He also told us that no peace treaty has been signed and, in fact, Israel and Jordan are still at war. While the border is patrolled daily, no shots have been fired since 1970. Many of the people living there are Jordanian citizens. Soon we left what is called the West Bank and entered Israel proper. In front of us the hills of the mountains of Gilboa where Gideon, following God's instructions, narrowed his men down to 300 as they' drank from the water (Judges?). We drove through recently harvested cotton fields with some areas still in need of harvest before the coming rains of winter. Israel. Yehuda told us. is about the size of New Jersey We stopped at the Jordan River where it is said Christ w’as baptized < Matthew 3). This is the one area that proved to be a big disappointment during our travels as it has become very commercialized during the past few years It was here we had our first lesson on looking beyond what is there .’. looking back into the Bible to get a complete picture By looking down stream one could see the natural beauty of the river The traditional spot where Jesus was baptized is located five miles east of Jericho. Somewhere near the site of the baptism, the Israelites under Joshua, crossed the river and invaded the land (Joshua 3:13-17 1 and somewhere near here the prophet Elijah was taken by a chariot of fire into heaven (11 Kings2:U> We quickly realized this is a very special river as it winds its way through the deepest valleyon earth It rises in a valley between Mount Lebanon and Mount Hermon and ends at the Dead Sea Its name means the descender The course of the river is almost directly south to the lowest point on the face of the earth Many things happened on its shores and as we read our Bibles in the future we ll see not the commercialization but the river itself with its green waters and the beauty of the trees and shrubs along its banks We passed through Tibenas, a village at the time of Jesus, now a

IN ISRAEL — Carl Shearer of Milford, is shown by the Sea of Galilee in Israel. The sea was the setting for much of Christ s ministry.

resort town on the Sea of Galilee. Across the sea we could see the Golan Heights, sight of the war of 1967-1973 W’e were told Lebanon lies on the other side of the Golan Heights We drove past Magdala, a village on the Sea of Galilee mentioned in Matthew 15:39 as a place where Christ went. It is three miles north-northwest of Tiberias All that remain now are ruins Then on to the Mount of Beautitudes where it is believed Christ preached the Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5, 6 and 7). Here in the 1930 s a Catholic Church was built. On the porch of the church, which overlooks the Sea of Galilee. Max Beer read a portion of the Sermon on the Mount. Capernaum was an important center in the ministry of Jesus. It was from here we crossed the Sea of Galilee for our return to Tiberias. Capernaum, located on the northwest shore of the Sea of Galilee, had its own synagogue at the time of Christ and was probably a military post (Matthew 8:5:13: Luke 7:1-10) When Jesus was rejected at Nazareth he made this his headquarters •(Matthew 4:4 > Mark 2; U. man sick with palsey, a nobleman's son and others were healed here. Capernaum is no longer a town, only a few ruins remain Excavation begun at the village of Tell Hum in 1905 identified it with Capernaum. After a quick tour of the town, which included the sites of Peter’s house and the synagogue, we crossed the Sea of Galilee on a boat to Tiberias where we would spend the night The Sea of Galilee is 13 miles long and seven miles wide with a depth of between 130 and 157 feet. It lies 686 feet below sea level It is also called the Sea of Chinnereth (Numbers 34:11), the Sea of Kinnereth, the Sea of Gennesaret (Luke 5:1) and the Sea of Tiberias (John 6:1 and 21:D. § We spent a delightful evening at Ron Beach on the shores of the sea Lea trice Rapp and Janice Pippenger went on a short swim, others collected stones from the sea. some took photographs and still others enjoyed the quiet, peaceful setting of the evening sun over the lake in the semitropical climate as they sat on the patio overlooking the lake. Truly this is a place we will long remember. On our fifth day we would see the sunrise over the Sea of Galilee and the sunset on the Mediterranean Sea on our way to Jerusalem. Leaving Tiberias our guide told us that Israel has an “Ins&pt Citizenship" law for returning Jews. A Jew's lineage comes from his mother.

We drove through the village of Cana, now an Arab village, where Jesus turned the water into wine (John 2). Then on to Nazareth, in lower Galilee, north of the Plain of Jezrael (Matthew 4:13; Mark I:9).This is the boyhood home of Jesus The fountain of the Virgin supplied the town with water until 25 years ago. It was the home of Joseph and Mary and Jesus until he entered the public ministry at the age of 30 (Matthew 2:23; Luke2:39 and 4:16). Today Nazareth is a center of population with 70,000 people. Because Nazareth lies in a valley from which the surrounding hills rise it was bypassed by traffic of ancient times. Today it is a center with a population of 70,000; its meaning to Christianity has provided it

BY THE SEA OF GALILEE — Carl and Florence Duncan and Dennis Replogle talk over events of the day as they look out over the Sea of Galilee. On Wednesday. Oct. 20, the group crossed the border between Jordan and Israel, traveled along the Jordan River’s West Bank to the Sea of Galilee where we spent the night at Ron Beach, on the shore of the sea.

with significance. As strange as it may seein, the village is not mentioned in the Old Testament. We stopped at a Greek Orthadox Church where the spring is now located. It was by the spring the angel is said to have told Mary that God had chosen her to become the mother of the Christ child. Our guide told us 25.000 Jews and 40,000 Arabs live in Nazareth with the mayor of the city being a Communist. He said there were 11 parties in all in the Israelie parliament with 120 seats We crossed the plain of Jezrael (the Armagadden of Revelation 16:16). The valley cuts across the country from east to west. The width of the country there is 50 miles. The valley proper is 20 miles across and 15 miles at the widest point. One half of the valley is below sea level. Today is is very productive and is known as the bread basket.

The Way- Step #4 Jesus said: Also I say unto you, Whosoever shall confess me before men, him shall the Son of man also confess before the angels of God: Luke 12:8 That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.
