Four Warriors selected for all-conference team

Four Wawasee football players were selected for the all Northern Lakes Conference first-team at the annual NLC coaches’ meeting last week. All-state candidate Ross Daltistroai at luateag back and Joel Bales at end were offensive choices; Mike Patty, an interior lineman and linebacker Eric Beer were first-team defense detections

state race. Five out of the seven runners breezed through the 3000 meter course at personal best times, prompting Minton to say “everything turned out the way we wanted.” Wawasee went up against the most powerful teams in the state and coach Minton was not surprised by his team’s finish. “Everyone ran well through the top seven, eight or nine teams,” he said. Carmel won the meet, despite the Greyhounds top runner finishing eight places

MIKE PATTY

i

ERIC BEER

Other Wawasee mentions were Beer, who played guard on offense, as second-team offense; running back Todd Reiff, also a second-team selection. Honorable mention were tight end Pat Hare and lineman Mart West The Warriors closed out 1982 as the winningest team at Wawasee since the 1976 squad went 7-3.

behind Stichter, with 118 team points. Rival Northrop finished ahead of Wawasee at sixth with 178 and Michigan City Elston, a team Minton’s squad has faced before, finished fourth with 143 points. Wawasee accumulated 216 for the seventh spot. Like most cross-country meets, it was a time for personal accomplishments. For Wawasee’s Stichter. it was the end of a season-long pursuit of last season's Wawasee star Stacy Wall, who is now running for the Indiana State University Sycamores, record time. Stichter broke Wall’s record by a full second with a 10:45.8 finish. Wall made the record books last year at 10:47. “She’s been toying around with it all season long,” Minton said. “I figured she had a good chance down there." Stichter finished eighth in the team scoring, 21st overall, and did it with a strong finish at the tape. Behind Stichter at 10:59 was consistent Sonya Melendez. She finished 18th in the team scoring and 38th as an individual. Carla Clouse was next for Wawasee, finishing 44th in the team scheme and 67th as an individual with a 11:24 time. Following her was Sheila Kleinrichert (11:49) who finish 70th in the team scoring and 93rd as an individual. Dee Stump and Amy Clouse were side-by-side for the fifth and sixth spot on the squad. Stump finished 76th for the team and 99th as an individual (11:57) and Clouse was 100th individually and 77th in the team race. Finishing out the Warriorette march to the finish line was senior Carol Walker (12:04) who finished 83rd for the team and 106th as an individual. Minton said last year’s state race featured Tonda Yeager behind Wall at 11:06. For 1982, Sonya Melendez may have established herself as the thirdbest all-time runner in Wawasee history with her 10:59 time. Both Stichter and Yeager are through as cross-country runners at Wawasee, but Melendez will have another chance to improve upon her standing in the record books. In fact, practically the entire squad, Carla Clouse, Kleinrichert, Stump, and Amy Clouse all return next season. “Everyone returns except our number one and number seven runners,” Minton said. In addition, there will be some freshman who could make it into the team scoring next season. These freshmen, as always, will be a big key. "We expect big things from our freshmen, ” said Minton. The only disappointment about Saturday’s afternoon meet at the South Grove Golf Course was Fort Wayne Northrop’s sixthplace finish. "I thought we had a better team than Northrop,” said Minton. “They really ran weD.” The only other big surprise in the "sweet 16” field for Minton was Bloomington North's 131 point, second-place finish. Besides those two minor disappointments, everything went as expected for the now state-wide known cross-country elites. “We had five of seven girls peak at the right time. That's what you shoot for... and that's what we did.”
