First in a series By BUD AND JERI SEELY A special excitement filled the air on Sunday, Oct. 17, as we left Milford enroute to Chicago's O'Hare International Airport and the first leg of a journey that would take us to the land where Christ and the prophets of old had once walked. In our party of 14 were Carl and Grace Shearer, Leatrice Rapp, Max Beer, Dennis Replogle, Carl and Florence Duncan and the two of us, all of Milford; Janice (Rapp) Pippenger of Warsaw; Ruth Guttenburg. of Phoenix. Ariz., mother of Carl Shearer; Marjorie Duncan of Fort Wayne, sister of Carl Duncan; Rhetta Sturtevant of Tecumseh. Mich., Bud's sister; and Nancy Kimmel of Mesa, Ariz., another of Bud's sisters At 12 midnight the sun came up over Belfast, Ireland, and we were served breakfast. It was 6 a m in Europe. We landed at Amsterdam. Holland, at 7:10 a m. (1:10 a m r Indiana time) and were greeted by a delightful young woman by the name of Elizabeth An employee of KLM, she proved most helpful in arranging a two-hour tour of her city during our\fivehour layover. Landing here we could not help but think of the English Puri*.ins who had lived in Holland .">r a time before coming to America in 1620 to form Plymouth Colony as they searched for a place where they could have freedom of religion. Amsterdam, founded in 12701275. is a seaport, capital and principal city of the Netherlands, located in the province of North Holland It is divided by a series of semicircular canals into about 90 islands connected by about 400 bridges Almost the entire city rests on a foundation of piles dnven 40 to 50 feet through soft peat and sand to a firm substratum of clay. During a five-hour layover in Holland we enjoyed a delightful tour of the city of Amsterdam, vowing one day to return. Our tour took us past the Rijksmuseum which contains one of the largest collections of Dutch and Flemish paintings in the world We were also dnven past

the New Church (Nieuwe Kerk) built in the 15th century. It is here that Rembrant was buried and the present queen was married. And, the royal palace, originally built in the 17th century as the town hall. The building is old and the royal family no longer lives there. It is located on a large, square in the center of the city. Beautiful white lace curtains, each with a different design, hang at almost every* window. Most of the older buildings in the city are of brick. We learned there were 10,000 windmills in Holland at one time. Now there are 900 with only 350 still working They are being replaced by hydro plants. All too soon we were back at the airport with a renewed understanding of Holland and a promise to return one day. We could not leave this ever so charming country without taking something to remind us of our short visit so purchased a small porcelain vase decorated with blue flowers and windmills Shortly thereafter we were in the air once again winging our way to Amman. Jordan We stopped briefly in Athens, Greece, then on to the Amman airport where we found security high It was 8 pm and we had officially arrived in the lands of the Bible Amman is the Biblical Rabba Ammon, called “city of many springs" in II Samuel. David destroyed the city 1.000 years BC. It was here that David sent Uriah, husband of Bathsheba, to be killed It is the capital of Jordan and is 40 miles eastnortheast of Jerusalem Amman is the commercial, industrial and administrative center of Jordan As Rabba Ammon, the city was probably in existance as early as the fifth or fourth century BC Ip* the third century BC the Egyptian King Ptolemy captured it and renamed it Philadelphia, a fact we thought unusual since our passports were issued «at Philadelphia. Pa It remained Philadelphia throughout the Roman and Byzantine empires The city was the leading city of the Roman province of Arabia in the first century and after the fall of the Byzantine Empire in the seventh century and the conquest of the city by the Muslim Arabs, it was re-named Rabba Ammon and fell into decline It wasn't

revived until the 20th century. Because of the problems in Lebanon Ammon is fast becoming the trading center of the Mid East. Ammon became the capital of newly independent Jordan in 1946. Because of the problems in Lebanon investors are now coming to Ammon. Ten years ago the population of the city was 1,500. now it has a population of 1,125.000 and is fast becoming the trading center of the Mid East. Early the next morning we were up and on our way for what was to become the first of many very busy days. As we traveled Naiam. our very able guide, told us Jordan is 89 per cent desert. Mining phosphate is the number one industry with Jordan having the largest reserve of phosphate in the world. He said there are 2.7 million people in the country with 94 per cent of them being Moslem and the other six per cent

Christians. Education, Naiam told us, is a must in his country for youngsters from the age of six through the ninth grade. Boys and girls, however, go to separate schools. Naiam knew many books of the Bible by heart and spoke English fluently He told us he spent three months each year as a professor at the university, three months as a tour guide in England and six months as a tour guide in Jordan. He said he has taught both at Brigham Young University in Utah and at the University of California at Los Angeles. From the top of Mount Nebo we looked into the promised land as Moses had done so many years before. Our group spent the day retracing the exodus of the Israelites and visiting other

Biblical sites in Jordan. We pissed through Madaba (Medeba) in the land of Moab, the hometown of Ruth, on our way to Mount Nebo. It was from Mount Nebo that Moses viewed the promised land. (Deuteronomy 32:49; 34:1). On a clear day all of Palestine can be seen from this peak. Jericho, 20 miles from Mount Nebo, appears as a green patch in a land of desert. In Bible days all of the land Moses saw was green. However, when the Turks came, our guide related, they build railroads and cut down the trees for rails and for firing the engines. The land has also been overgrazed. Currently the government is trying to ref or rest the land and has set aside special holidays for planting trees. Then we returned to Madaba and a vist to Saint George Church, built in 1896. Here is the oldest mosaic in the world. It is a map of the known world and is 1,400 years old. We passed through the land of Gilead (Numbers 32) where Reuben and the sons of Gad

sought to live. At Petra, the rose red city carved from solid rock and forgotten for 500 years, we stood in awe as we looked at the beauty of the rocks and the carvings there. Petra is the Mount Seir and the Selah of the Old Testament. It is 166 miles south of Ammon and 61 miles straight south of Jerusalem. Naiam told us the mountains in Deuteronomy 2:4 are Petra. Petra, the classical name, and Sela, the early name, both mean “rock.” There are only two ways back to the dwellings and caves, where Bedwins still live —by jeep or by horse. Most of the people who visit the area travel by horseback. Entering the ravine, which is about a mile long and called the siq, one finds sheer cliffs on either side that rise higher and higher as the path penetrates deeper into the heart of the mountain. No sound is heard except the pebbles under the horses hooves and an occasional comment from the guide who accompanies each horesman. The road twists and turns and one can seldom see more than a few yards ahead. Then, suddenly, ahead of you, framed in the cleft is part of the rock-cut facade of a great tomb. This tomb is called the Khazneh or Treasury. An urn at the top carries the marks of many bullets which have been fired at it in hopes of shattering it and releasing the treasure which tradition says is hidden there. The Treasury is the best preserved of all the monuments since it is sheltered from winds and rains and the soft sandstone has not weathered like it has on most of the others. It is 92 feet wide and 130 feet high. Beyond this clearing the gorge narrows again. Great tombs are found on either side. We walked down the gorge to find a theatre cut out of the rock. Then we mounted our horses again, finding it surprisingly easier the second time around, for the return trip. Not far from where we were is the city which was extensively

occupied from about the fifth century BC to the fifth century AD. Little is known of the early history of the Nabataeans but they probably started as a wandering Arab tribe that grew rich on the plunder of caravans coming from Arabia. They are sometimes identified with the Nabaioth of the Old Testament and may perhaps be referred to by Obadiah in his tirade against the Edomites. The Nabataeans ruled the country as far north as Damascus when they were in the heighth of their power. We wish we had had time to see more but there is a total of nine miles of tombs and buildings at Petra and one day does not allow time to See everything.

Leaving Petra we stopped at the Spring of Moses (Numbers 20:8) believed to be the place where Moses struck his cane ahd the water gushed from the Rocks. It is only a short distance from ' Petra. On the way back to our hotel we passed the El Der Monastery where the tomb of Aaron, Moses' brother, is located. Aaron’s family was selected for the priesthood and the office was made hereditary. Thus Aaron, the first high priest, became the head of the priestly order (Exodus 28). Tomorrow we would be up early again for our crossing of the Jordan River and our journey into Israel.
