Power bills topic for Rotary A representative of the Northern Indiana Public Service Company spoke to the SyracuseWawasee Rotary Club this week on the subject of why the NIPSCo power bills continue to go up. Michael Dillman, a member of the NIPSCo safety and claims division, spoke as a guest of Jay Peffley, program chairman. Historical facts were heard by the audience and many questions were asked. The regional electric and gas utility was founded in 1912. Although all NIPSCo gas is purchased for resale to its customers, the utility does manufacture 74 per cent of its own electricity. This is produced in its four fossil fuel and two hydroelectric plants. The company's 6,500 employees and 2,000 vehicles serve 30 counties in northern Indiana and a population of some 2.2 million people. Dillman noted that their 519,000 customers experience inflation anxiety generally. The questions focused upon the anxiety of paying the largest utility rates in the region. Although coal as a major fossil fuel has increased from $7 to $44 per ton since 1970, the major factor of the NIPSCo increases have been caused by the cost of money, the cost of building, the cost of employee wages and benefits, as well as the cost of fuels. Clean air regulations currently consume 18 per cent of the budget not spent for the fossil fuels and the recently concluded efforts of the company to construct the Bailey Nuclear Plant have contributed significantly to the increased customer charges It could not be anticipated that the costs of electricity and gas sold by NI PSCo will go down in an economy which will, hopefully, become more stable. It could be expected that the recent escalations will moderate, a reasonable but not satisfying anticipation. To the regional economy, the clean air scrubbers now being installed will enable NIPSCo to purchase more midwest coal, which does contain more pollutants than the western coal purchased in recent years. Accolades were given to Dillman for his preparation and wide knowledge of his subject and his incisive response tothe Rotarians presenting questions Vinegar'noil Prevent leather furniture from cracking by polishing regularly with a cream made of 1 part vinegar and 2 parts linseed oil Fresh fish Thaw frozen fish in milk. The milk draws out the froxen taste and provides a fresh-caught flavor. Parsley fresh Parsley lends its freshness to other herbs. Try mincing equal , amounts of fresh parsley with such spices as dried dill, basil, marjoram, or rosemary. You’ll taste the difference.
