RALLY 'ROUND THE FLAGPOLE — It was time to sing the Warriors fight song around the flagpole after the Warriors assured the school's first winning football season since 1978 with a 22-8 win over Culver Military Academy. The seniors-started
'B2 Warriors winners North Wood tonight g
By GARY LEWIS In 1976. Jimmy Carter just got into the White House, the Reds won the World Series, and the Wawasee Warriors were 7-3. A lot of things have changed since those days and the ’B2 edition of the Warriors became a part of those changes in history after last week's 22-8 stomping of Culver Military Academy. Coach Dickerson s Warriors used a fine balanced air and ground attack and relentless defensive pressure to smother the Eagles’ chances of breaking the 500 mark. And in doing that, assurred the football program s first winning season since the 1976 gridiron season ' . . . The Warriors used a balanced attack in downing the Eagles 22-8, assuring themselves the first winning season since 1976... /The history-making win was a special one for the seniors, who did it before the home folks at the last home game of the season Wawasee upped their record to 5-4 and look forward to making the mark a respectable 6-4 with a win tonight (Wednesday) against the rugged North Wood Panthers. Game time is scheduled for 7:30 at Nappanee Coach Dickerson hopes his troops will be a bit more emotional tonight, especially after the Warriors emotional letdown during the second half Maybe it should be termed the "defensive letdown." Because the offense, behind quarterback Rick Pena's 8-12 passing and Todd Reiff's 137 yards in 16 carries, was working together through most of the ball game and put some points on the scoreboard this time — the most points since the Northridge (33-0) win five weeks ago. The defensive squad seemed a bit lackadaisical to Dickerson, and because of this. Dickerson told the squad what was on his mind in the fourth quarter The on-the-field pep talk seemed to work, because the defensive line responded quickly with a quarterback sack to spoil the Eagles chances of another score during the closing minutes "They were relaxing We weren't emotionaly up," explained Dickerson "I think the offense showed more intensity than the defense did It wasn’t like the defense wasn't playing good football. They were, said Dickerson In recognition and in execution the troops were in good shape But when it came to really lowering the boom on people, the Warriors let the Eagles off the hook. “We ll have to be emotional against NorthWood.’ said Dickerson No love is lost between Wawasee and the Panthers of Nappanee so Wawasee shouldn't have too much trouble getting emotional for this contest. The Panthers were big winners against Rochester, 12-0, last week and of course upset the stubborn Bremen Lions in a 36-7 thrashing. Every concerned Warrior fan had better circle number 31 in their program tonight In order for the Warriors 6-4 dream to become a reality, the defensive squad has got to stop Darrin Bemiller —a 6-0,180-pound senior running back. Bemiller is for the Panthers what Todd Reiff is for the Warriors, a punishing fallback-linebacker “We have to be able to stop Bemiller. “ Stopping the running game has been a Wawasee trait all season long. No football team has broken the 100-yard barrier this season against the Warriors. . . . Stopping the running game has been a Wawasee trait all season long. No football team has broken the 100-yard barrier this season against the Warriors. The Panthers will be coming at Wawasee with the veer offense and the outside option. An offense Wawasee has seen
tradition was extra special for family and friends of the class of *B2 because it was the last home game of the season. The troops will try to make it 6-4 with a win tonight at Nappanee. (Photo by Gary Lewis)
before. A big key will be the Panthers left-handed senior quarterback Kurt Hand. Hand likes to throw the football out of the option and is a powerful runner. “He doesn't zip the ball like a Kennedy (Concord quarterback Brant) but he has a nice touch.” “We just have to control the passing game, we re not going to stop them from passing," said Dickerson. Os course, another important factor involves the offense. “We’ve got to move the football. We’ll need a couple of TD’s to beat them,” says the Warriors mentor. In last week’s win, the offense seemed to be back on track. Pena’s passing, coupled with Reiff’s running and an excellent performance by the offensive line, made for a good showing. Pena had plenty of protection for the most part, and Reiff had some gaping holes to run through. But on the statistics sheet, the Warriors didn't chew up the turf like they are capable of doing. Wawasee had to settle for a 35-yard field goal by Kris Cox on their first posession to take a 3-0 lead with 6:25 left in the first stanza. The Cox field goal wasn’t the highlight of the drive, however. Todd Reiff, picking up the slack for injured all-state candidate Ross Dahlstrom, scampered 57 yards on a third and two situation. Reiff made it to the Eagle 12 before a Culver Military man tripped him up. Ross Dahlstrom did not start in the contest, but went in early in the first quarter on offense as a blocking back for Reiff. Dahlstrom did manage to keep in the race for the area scoring title, taking in the ball from the five in the Warriors third quarter scoring drive. .. We just got to control their passing, we’re not going to stop them from passing,” Coach Myron Dickerson... Probably the most exciting play of the game was the receiving work of sophomore Kevin Tracy. Tracy, earning a starting role after the senior starter was cut from the roster because of a discipline problem, got two chances for a score. Quarterback Rick Pena, looking for his favorite receiver Pat Hare, did not see Tracy open long at first. That pass to Hare was incomplete, and an estatic Dickerson called the sophomore's number again. This time, Pena looked for the long man in the pattern and connected with a 40-yard touchdown strike. It wasn’t fancy, but the play worked. Dickerson heaped the praise on the young Tracy after the contest. "He has good speed. He is the fastest receiver on the team. He’s going to be a good one,’’ said Dickerson Next season, he hopes to put Tracy on the weights to increase his strength. “He’s going to have to become stronger, dedicate himself to improve his body strength. Other key players in the win were Jeff Thorn, defensive end. who Dickerson said played “by far his best game this season.” Thorn recovered from an injured shoulder he’s been suffering from most of the season. Dahlstrom played defense in the second half, picking off an interception to end a scoring threat, but Steve White played most of the game at Dahlstrom s spot. “He had one of his better games. ” Ray Pena, a spot starter, was another key. Pena is part of the defensive coaching staff's “routing personnel” plans which Dickerson praised as being a big success. “The defensive coaches have done a good job of using personnel," said Dickerson. Athlete of the Week
Quarterback Rick Pena has had some rough moments leading his team to a 5-4 record, but last week Pena’s 8 for 12 passing put the pressure off the running game and enabled the Warriors to make the history books with their 22-8 win. This week's Mail-Journal "Athlete of the Week” is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Pena of 305 W. First, Milford. Pena and the rest of the Warriors will need another fine performance to run against North Wood tonight to make their record 6-4.

WHAT DOESffine tuning" a lure mean? This is a question often asked at seminars I attend, and I can understand how it would puzzle a casual fisherman. So, let's unravel the puzzle. Fine tuning means adjusting a lure so it will run on a true centerline, especially when operated at high speeds. You do it by using a pair of pliers and bending the Line-tie the way you want the lure to run. In short, if it drifts a little left then you bend the line-tie a little right until it runs on dead center. Why should you need to do this to a quality product like a Mann lure? Well, we can make almost perfect runners but so long as lures are assembled by hand there will be a
