New Treatment Although it has been estimated that from one-fifth to one-third of all women in the United States have the condition known as vaginitis (and a number of men have contracted it too), not many people know much about it or its seriousness. In the last decade it has become one of the most common and recurrent disorders in women of all ages. It can be caused by bacteria, protozoa or a fungus. The fungus infection—called monilia—is the most common of the vaginal infections. The fungus is normally present in small and harmless quantities in the mouth, bowel, and vagina. When susceptibility to infections increases, the fungus grows very quickly in the vagina, most frequently in those women who are pregnant, diabetic, or who are taking antibiotics or hormones. The most common symptoms are itching, discharge, a burning sensation or pain. And the first thing for a woman to do is to see her doctor. Fortunately, a new treatment has been developed that many doctors are recommending. Called mon IST AT 7 Vaginal Cream and manufactured by Ortho Pharmaceutical Corporation, it can cure in seven days instead of two weeks, and it provides rapid symptomatic relief. When you see your doctor, you are likely to be told to avoid tight or synthetic fabric underwear, eat properly, try to avoid scratching, not wear wet bathing suits, wear clean and dry clothing, and be sure to complete the seven days of treatment.
