ON THE MOVE — All-state candidate Ros* Dahlstrom makes the move while carrying the ball in action against Concord last week. Warriors do everything except win

By GARY LEWIS Wawasee took away everything but a win last week, as a powerful Concord squad was held to one touchdown by a stingy Warrior defense Wawasee outrushed and outplayed the mighty Minutemen for three-fourths of the contest, but the Warriors failure to put the ball into the end zone came back to haunt them Wawasee had plenty of chances to put the Minutemen away early. On their first possession. Wawaee drove 50 yards with ease to the Concord 18 yard-line before all hopes for an early lead ended when Rick Pena's pass was intercepted by the Minutemen s Paul Bond. That drive seem to break the Warriors morale for the rest of the contest. “Things just aren’t clicking.'' said head coach Myron Dickerson. “The slant pass was wide open, Rick (Pena) just didn't get the baU to the man Another breaking point in the contest was a big fourth-and-one sitution on the Concord 34 in the fourth quarter. Wawasee elected to go for the first down. A running play to Ross Dahlstrom was headed off by a ferocious pile-up on the tine of scrimmage. “We had a break-down Their defensive end got through without anyone touching him,” said Dickerson. Those two plays spelled defeat for the Warriors because the Minutemen's only real threat came when it counted. The Minutemen capitalized on a 25-yard scamper by quarterback Brant Kennedy and a pass interference penalty before taking it in from the one-yard marker during the 80-yard second quarter scoring drive. Concord ended the evening with 182 yards in total offense — 63 on the ground and 119 in the air — and their playoff hopes alive after across-town rival Goshen was whipped 36-7 by Plymouth. The wild, whacky Northern Lakes Conference was clinched by Warsaw who beat North Wood 21-0. Wawasee’s 4-< mark overall, and 3-3 in the NLC. virtually eliminates them from any post-season action. Other than their inability to score a touchdown, Dickerson said he was pleased by his team's efforts. “Other than that, it was a good football game.” “You’ve got to put the ball into the end zone, though. That’s what it is all about," said Dickerson. Putting the ball into the fnd zone is something Wawasee hasn't been able to do in recent weeks. A major reason for that is the offensive line which has gone under some changes during the season. A line that looked disciplined, strong and together seemed a little out of sync against the Minutemen “When we get down to the 17 or 18 yard-line, we have to be at the point when we’re going to say they are not going to stop us, " said Dickerson. “We just did not maintain the blocks with the

<"We have a good football team ... we played with everybody this season. We know we can play against anybody on the foot bal 1 field ” The interior line had to contend with an injury to center Jay Glon during the season and sophomore Kevin Tracey started at tight end last week due to some discipline problems with the starting tight end. Against Culver, also 4-4 on the season, the Warriors will be . facing a near carbon-copy of themselves. As far as the offensive styles of the two football teams goes, the Culver Military Academy rebes on their running game — headed by senior running backs Dennis French (6-1.200). and Jeff Pempcrton (5-6 144) — to set up their passing game, headed by senior quarterback Dan Sullivan (5-11,175). Culver defeated Danville and Knox High school for two of their wins Dickerson plans to work his offensive line hard all week long on maintaining their blocks. He said if the Warriors can get some “touches” early, fans could see the Warriors bounce back. _ A big kink in the Warriors* armor this Friday will be the absence of all-state candidate Ross Dahlstrom. Dahlstrom injured his hand again, something the doctors called a "spiral fracture." As of press time, Dahlstrom still had a cast on the hand and will probably set this week’s game out. That means Steve Yoder, who showed some signs of greatness against Goshen, and Ron Schwartz will be getting some playing time. Todd Reiff, who ended the game with 64 yards on 17 carries last week, will have to pick up the slack for Dahlstrom “We've got good people on this football team. 1 know . the offensive bne will come through for us," said Dickerson.

Volleyball season ends on winning note

Wawasee’s varsity volleyball team ended the regular season on a winning note Tuesday night, with a 15-4, 15-3 victory over Tippecanoe Valley. It was the end of a frustrating final portion of the season, as coach Barb Brouwer’s squad struggled to recover from the sudden Joss of star Dawn Young who severely injured her knee. The junior varsity beat Valley 15-3,15-9. Wawasee’s spiking efforts were led by Christy Speicher, who had nine kills for the team. Tona Sellers and Penny Hoover, along with Maude Packer, were also Wysong has first neeters meeting Wawasee varsity basketball coach John Wysong had his first corporation basketball coaches meeting October 13. The main topic of the meeting was season organization and practice drills. Wysong said this is the first of several meetings he hopes to have with his coaches to better coordinate the program. Attending were Rob Staley, assistant varsity coach, Gayland Hershberger, Tony Vermillion, Rich Bender, Tom Jones, Casimir Szynal, Worth Packer, Bob Sylvester and Tony Clouse. The next meeting is scheduled for October 20. Easy cleanup To make cleanups easier, coat the grill with vegetable oil before cooking. Begin cleaning as soon as the grill is cool to the touch. Too salty? The ideal solution for too much salt is to make a second batch, omit the salt, then combine the two batches and freeze for later use.
