Robin Hoodism in reverse
Dear Editor: I get really upset when I hear that Senator Lugar s family business evaded $23,000 in taxes last year because Lugar had a hand in protecting a particular tax loophole in Congress' It is sheer hypocrisy to hear politicians like Lugar talk about cutting taxes for everybody, and then find out that what they mean is cutting taxes for the rich and for themselves That’s Robin Hood-ism in reverse — and it

makes me angry! My taxes didn’t go down last year! I think every decent, honest, taxpaying citizen of this state owes Congressman Fithian a word of thanks for showing us the Lugar voting record on these loopholes Fithian’s got my vote in November, and he should have the vote of every Other voter who pays his taxes Tom Feeney Indianapolis Junior High teacher
not be privileged to sign up for the draft They would have been forced into military For those who served, and gave their lives so all the people of American could be free in a free world certainly deserve the respect and love of our country. They gave so much > And for Mr Wey bright to make a statement that he thinks the older, stable and dependable man
should be drafted, is an insult. Do you think Mr. Weybright that these men who fought WWII, should go back again? Were you in the service during WWII? or any of your sons? If so would you have him or yourself ordered to go back and serve again. I think not. I know so many in my own family served and died, as a result of diseases and injuries received in New Guinea and Korea. My husband also suffers from his serving. Now I think it’s time our south show some courage and quit trying to hide behind the apron of religion or other excuses which they hope will keep them home. The gutless wonders who ran to Canada and ports unknown during Viet Nam were given the nght to return to their home after that war was ended, only due to the fact that Mr. Nixon and his hunchmen were pardoned for their atrocities, will those same resisters be required to sign for registration? I suppose not. but if I had any say. they would be the first ones to go. and right to the front. There is a saying “America, love it or leave it’” that is just what so many did to keep from going to Viet Nam But when the war was over, they loved America enough to want to return, and they got jobs that returning veterans should have had. So my thoughts are take these criminals who commit a crime to keep from going into military, the cos and. the cowards and draft thenxtet them earn the freedom America has to offer. Sincerely, Laura McClintic Moral issues warning Dear Editor. I hope and pray voters will become much more informed on candidates' beliefs and representatives’ voting records on the moral issues, before voting this year. Please, a liberal politician is a liberal whether he s a Democrat. Republican or whatever. I had the opportunity to discuss personally, moral issues with candidate Maxwell He is running against US. Terry West, riding in place of his daughter, Teresa, who was ill; and Denise Bender, age 7, and her sister Am. Bender, age 9. both from Benton, but raised $422 for the hospital. Connie Bender, Lynn Cannon, and Judy Rollins, and her son.
He informed me that he supported the Equal Rights Amendement, supports homosexual rights, suports abortion, supports teaching evolution as fact in our public schools. He believes tax exemption is federal subsidy (the IRS and most federal judges share this belief also), if so. this gives the government the right to ..exhort authority over Christian schools, other religious and nonprofit organizations, etc. He informed me. he was a history teacher, and our fore fathers didn't strive to write Biblical morals and principals into our constitutions. Also. Christians and or traditional moral people are trying to force their values upon the minority. Please be informed I believe you will be amazed at the many liberal candidates and representatives, who share most of Candidate Maxwell's moral views. May I ask you. can we possibly retain a free, orderly, prosperous nation, if we continue to deteriorate morally? Please remember, this leads to lack of scruples in character, integrity, honesty, respect, etc. 1 believe we would find that government could do everything right concerning the economy, taxes, defense, communism, etc. This all would be in vain, unless our beloved country returns to higher morals God’s Word says. come from higher-up. Instead of complaining in the paper, why not go to someone higher with your complaints? Sure the post office has cut backs, what company hasn't in these times. Most postal employees don’t get paid for the holidays. If we have a snowstorm, you can cease work and send home your people. The mail carriers deliver in the lousy snow and ice. Even if you don’t shovel your walk, they deliver. I’ve seen mail-carriers get chased by dogs that should be tied up. We are suppose to have an ordinance against dogs running loose, but it doesn't work. Instead of complaining about the mail service, why not complain about all the dogs that run loose? By GARY LEWIS The Democratic candidate for US Senator. Floyd Fithian, said he wanted this campaign to be a campaign based on the issues, rather than personalities. But with the upcoming election for the US Senate seat only a few weeks away, things don’t look good for an issue-based campaign. Incumbent Richard Lugar and his Republican party have been bombarding the media with ads questioning, among other things. Fithian's attendance record for votes in Congress. The Republicans are trying to pretend the problems aren’t there that things are getting better, said Fithian. "That is the most incredible phenomenon I've .seen in my lifetime. ” said the Congressman. “I’ve never run against anyone who so casually misuses the facts as Senator Lugar and his people." Fithian was in Warsaw Wednesday for a brief press conference at the newly opened democratic headquarters on Eaist Winona Avenue. “I think everyone here knows something about my commitment to the job I have." he said. Fithian said he has had a 90 per cent voting record in Congress.
“I’ve never run against anyone who so casually misuses the facts as Senator Lugar and his people,” — Congressman Floyd Fithian, Democratic candidate for Senator.
Another matter “tossed on the air" is Lugar’s recent ads concerning the number of Fithiansponsored bills put into law. “This is the most ludicrous I’ve seen. I have not heard the ad. but it goes something like this During the 10 years he’s been in Congress. Congressman Fithian has introduced 303 bols and only one Fithian bill went into law.* That’s just not true.”

usually involves various amendments to the bill before it becomes law. Most of the time, when the proposed bill reaches full committee, the committee members will vote to rewrite the bill. This usually means the committee chairman will get his name on the bill as author. “1 may have put in a year or two work on it. or may have written almost all myself, but it does not carry my name when it went into law. Fithian outlined “A Jobs Alternative’’ plan to the Republican policies at the conference. attended by only a handful of media representatives. Fithian proposes stimulating the private sector with a $3,000 tax rebate every time a business created a private sector job. He would target this tax break to small businesses by limiting the number of rebates any one company may take. He also supports fair trade laws to force foreign automakers to include certain percentages of American made parts in their products. Fithian believes this would create more jobs for American auto workers because this domestic content would make the foreign auto companies build in the United States the cars they sell in the United States. Fithian said he supports a vast modernization of the couatry’s transportation system. He wants to increase the mile-per-hour standard on the nation’s railways with government welfare recipients providing the labor force. Fithian said the revitalization program would be directed by the railroad companies. litis would employ persons already being paid by the government. “To do moreless what the Japanese has done and the Europeans have done.” said Fithian.
