or thousands of dollars. In the Lakeland area. Ben Waldbeser has to get the nod for the most innovative energysaver. He took a look at last year's energy bill for his gaspowered com-dryer and reading reports about the rising cost of natural gas, decided something had to be done. So he went to work on coming up with another means of fueling his drying operation. After looking at different kinds of stoves, he decided the easiest and energy-efficient system would be a wood burning model. “I’ve been thinking about howto do it for awhile," he said. And last December, he started to put the pieces together. Using an old water barrel obtained from a friend he knew, he went to the scrapyards and put together the wood-burning outfit. The stove has been used all summer long, and Waldbeser said he feels the unit has saved him 85 per cent in fuel costs. “It will use just about anything. Railroad ties, corn cobs, anything,” he said. Waldbeser figures the gas method would have costed him $1,500 for fuel. This method is practically free, except for the minima] cost of gasoline to pick the wood up. The electricity rates for the fan run around SSOO. This stove is just about the same as the wood-burning outfits now popular in homes. “It’s just about the same thing.” Another feature about this outfit is its mobile. Waldbeser built the entire unit on a trailer which he may move to his house or his (erring house to use as the primary heating source. “It weighs about three tons, but it can be moved,” said Waldbeser. Newspaper data In 1981, newspapers in the United States received about 57 per cent of their newsprint from Canada, about 42 per cent from the United States and less than 1 per cent from overseas. More than 2.6 million tons of newspapers are recycled annually in the United States. Newsprint accounts for approximately 16 per cent of the publishing costs for small daily newspapers, and about 32 per cent for larger newspapers.
