Apostolic Christian elder's duties are scripturally based
By GAIL WIDMOYER According to the Apostolic Christian Church's mhkpretation of the Bible, the term|/elder and bishop can be used' interchangeably, said Jesse Beer, church member who is currently the elder at the Milford church. Definition of elder, like the deacon post, can be interpreted differently by various churches, but at the Apostolic Christian Church the elder is head minister of the church m literal terms Elders are chosen from each local congregation upon approval of the whole body of elders within church structure "across the land," since elders of all congregations sen e together 4 as a body in denominational gover nance matters and meet semiannually Progression Before a member becomes the elder of his respective church, he must first become a minister Ministers within the Apostohc Christian Church sene without salary or seminary training and Beer himself (first became a minister on October 13. 1974 Current ministers at the church are Walter Steffen and Dale

'Trail of Truth'
(FOURTH IN SERIES) By DALE W. PARKER Who is the source to determine what writings, among many spurious ones, were worthy to be deemed holy scripture? To understand the answer to that question, a discussion of the word canon is in order. The word canon means a measuring-rod or rule. As a metaphor, it means, something that serves to regulate or determine other things. The term was applied in ancient times to the principles of art, fixing the proper length of the finger of a statue, the height of the face, the proportions of the limbs. When applied to the scriptures, the “canon” is the measuringrod, the testing rule, or critical standard by which each book of the Bible must be tested before it may be admitted as a part of the sacred scriptures. It is the name given to the particular books which came up to the standard that God designed. The word canon was first used tp describe the scriptures in the fourth century A.D. by Athanasius of Alexandria (296373 A.D.) Therefore, it is the name given to those authentic, genuine and inspired books which taken together, form the holy scriptures. A book or manuscript is canonical when its contents agree with a particular rule or standard. The books of our Bible have proven to be in conformity with a required standard and to possess divine authority as containing the God given rules of faith and practice for man.
COUNCILS- / ’
Four tests may be applied when references are made to canonicity: First, divine authorship; was it given by God through the Spirit or through men? Second, human authorship; was it written by a true prophet or a legitimate spokesman for God? Third, genuiness; did the manuscript go back to the time and writer from whom it professes to have originated?

Fourth, authenticity; is it true? Is it a record of actual facts? Vital to this issue is the testimony of the Jewish congregation before Christ and after, the early Christian church and the judgments of the church councils of earlier times. The Apostolic Fathers referred to all of the New Testament books within about a century of the time they were written. Early Christian writers called apologists defended the truthfulness of the books of the Bible. During a period of history when the growing church was facing ever-increasing opposition in every sphere of public life, these men verbally upheld the Christian ethic and the truthfulness of holy scripture. Quadratus, Aristides, Justin, Tatian, Theophilus, Minudus Felix and Tertullian were noted apologists. They sought to defend Christianity from misrepresentation and attack. Sincerely and fervently they proclaimed the ethical standards of Christian before magistrates and anyone who would listen to them. The doctrinal purity spawned in the primitive era of the church was unmercifully assaulted by heresies of every kind. Motivated by the threat of heretical pollutions, the church systematically hammered out the great doctrines of the Christian faith. With the ascendancy of the bishop of Rome, the clarity and simplicity of the scriptures over the centuries was lost. During the Medieval ages, accurately known as the “dark simplicity of the Gospel was hidden behind the
church's tradition and additions to what was in truth, God’s revelation. The greatest loss was confusing the clear teaching of the doctrine of justification by faith. Along with this crucial problem, millions of petpie for centuries had no Bible they were able to read. Ignorance and superstition reigned supreme. It was in the merciful providence of God that after a thousand years of control by the Roman
Baker's
church, a reformation was being kindled that would shake the foundations of Europe and the world. The Reformation of the sixteenth century is considered by many one of the greatest events in history. Along the trail of truth it stands as a prestigious hallmark never to be forgotten. This century was to see the light of the Holy Bible shine more lucidly and effectively than it had been able to do in many centuries. The corruption and unbiblical practices of the Latin church had been the burden of many conscientious souls. Papal morals were at a low ebb and not hidden from the public's eye. It appeared that Leo X took keen interest in the revival of heathen literature, not in the trail and promotion of the truth of the gospel of Jesus Christ.

The monastic orders jyere immersed in ignorance, superstition, idleness and wantoness. Due to contempt and ridicule they left little witness to the saving grace of a holy God. Men have observed that every true progress in church history is stimulated by a new and deeper study of the scriptures. Humanists, going back to the ancient classics, revived paganism. With the renewed interest in learning however, reformers, using their skills of intellect, searched the original languages in which the Bible had been penned. In doing so they revived the clarity and spirit of apostolic Christianity. Enthusiasm for the Gospel was rekindled into a fire that organized "religion” could not exterminate!
W J DR. GRAYDON SNYDER Rev. Paul Shrider states that during the noon hour a carry-in dinner will be served at the church to member families and visiting friends, who look forward annually to this opportunity for inspiration and Christian fellowship. He that hath ears to hear, let him hear.
