Russ White, district plant supervisor for United Telephone Company presented a program describing competition in long distance telephone service for Kiwanis Club of Lakeland. North Webster, on Monday morning. Sept. 27. The telephone supervisor compared the specialized common carrier service first developed by MCI with the regular telephone company long distance service. Specialized common carrier service required dialing of 21 digits from North Webster to another area code and 34 digits if redialing is necessary Only 11 digits are required for such a call or redialing through United Telephone System. The specialized service has an error rate of 30 per cent compared with two to five per cent for UTS un long distance calls

Lower costs are possible through the specialized service only if toll calls are over $25 per month between metropolitan ardhs, and in small local areas, such as North Webster, tolls would need to exceed SSO per month to realize savings. The fees for the specialized common carrier service offset the savings on rates on long distance calls In considering this specialized service customers need to think of: number of calls per month, time calls are made, place of origin and destination of calls, and how to get into this type of long distance service. For their part in the rate competition telephone companies must consider transmission standards, line availability and 1934 legislative requirement for universal service within an area under their jurisdiction.
Dieting: aiding a new you
SECOND IN A SERIES By GAIL WIDMOYER In a survey of three major drug store chains, an average of 39 products are available “over-the-counter” for anyone with a desire to “Lose weight fast. ” Even more diet promises are available through mail-order houses, private individuals and local bookstores. Diet aides can be divided into four basic categories, each readily available to the overweight masses who can afford the products. Supplements Dietary supplements are almost as varied as diet products in general. There are pills, candies and powders which should be taken once a day or as often as with every meal. A dietary supplement is any product taken in addition to three balanced meals the majority of which can be obtained from local businesses or through mail-order houses. Each of the supplements, like “Dexatrim” and "Ayds,” have a basic menu plan encouraging three balanced meals for a total intake of 1,200 calories per day. Basically, the supplements are appetite suppressants geared to help curb a dieting individual’s hunger drive and thus help him lose weight. Also included in the separate programs is an optional

Cold weather coining
By Patricia Rathbun Extension Home Economist In a few months cold weather will be with us again. Now is the time to caulk windows and doors and add weather stripping. The cost is minimal and will save many times over the initial cost next winter in reduced energy bills Start by making a thorough examination of your home for air leaks Older homes have many cracks around doors and windows Masonry exteriors — stone, stucco and brick — often develop cracks which should be sealed. But old or new, frame or masonry, insulated or not, all homes suffer some heat loss through air leaks. Once found the cracks should be filled with a caulking compound and drafts sealed with a durable weather stripping material. Before sealing with a caulking compound, all cracks should first be filled with caulking cotton, sponge rubber, or mineral wool. Then each crack should be thoroughly filled with a good quality caulking compound. Lead-base compounds are toxic and should not be used. Oil or resin base is the least expensive type of caulking compound, but also the least durable. Latex, silicone, and butyl are all good but have unique properties — so check the use for you job. Be sure you don’t caulk your windows so they can ’t be opened Windows, doors, and all movable joints in a home should be checked and a durable weather-stripping material added wherever air leaks are found. Be especially watchful in the following areas: Around loose fitting windowsash and casings .Around loose-fitting entrance doors Around doors or any openings between heated and unheated spaces Weather stripping is available in felt, foam rubber, flexible vinyl and metal strips and can be purchased by the running foot or in packages that contain enough
exercise program which is highly encouraged and an increase in the amount of water digested daily. The important thing to remember when following such a program is in order to remain at the desired weight, a dieting person cannot return to previous eating habits or the lost weight will be rediscovered. Programs There are two types of diet programs, straight diet and exercise. In a straight diet program, like “Weight Watchers” or “Conway,” people interested in joining the dub pay an entrance fee and periodic dues after the initial membership charge. Goals of the diet clubs are to help members change their eating habits, teach a nutritional food plan and off a- group support with optional exercise programs available. Membership in these dubs is extensive with 6,500 current members in Weight Watchers of Central Indiana alone. The second type of program available to interested persons is exercise dasses or more commonly called aerobics. This type of program was made popular by soap opera star, Richard Simmons, who also originated his own exercise show, book and cook book. While aerobics concentrates on exercise to music without the use
material and tacks to weather strip an average-size doublehung window or a door. Remedies for air leaks — caulking, weather-stripping and sealing — are among the least expensive of energy savers and, in most cases, are do-it-yourself jobs. If you need additional help in deciding on energy reduction improvements, you may be interested in a “Home Insulation Analysis.” It’s a computer program designed to help you decide if you need more insulation in your home. The computer program performs a winter heat loss analysis, calculating how much heat is being lost through ceilings, windows and other parts of your house. It then identifies the major heat loss areas. Next, the program estimates the annual savings in full costs through various insulation improvements. This helps you decide where your insulation dollar will do the most good. If you are interested in having the program run for your home, contact the Extension Office, 2674444 for the proper brochure. It’s free. “Working Together’’ will be the theme of the first Kosciusko County Service Forum to be held Thursday. of machines such as weight lifting devices, if weight loss is the ultimate goal, the exercise program must be accompanied by a reduced calorie diet. Replacements Dietary replacements are any products designed for use instead of regular meals such as “Cambridge International,” a dietary replacement sweeping the surrounding areas. The Cambridge diet is a “nutritional, lifetime plan,” according to C. Carroll Parmerlee, distributor. People under the Cambridge diet pay $17.50 for a 21-meal supply or approximately enough powder for one week’s worth of food. The powder is mixed with water and taken three times a day in place of regular meals. Cambridge dieters stay on the liquid diet for four weeks before gradually adding solid food. If by that time, the desired weight has not been obtained, after one week on the alternate food plan, the dieter returns to the liquid diet for four more weeks or until the desired weight is achieved. The Cambridge powder provides a person with a total caloric intake of 330 calories per day and provides the daily recommended amounts of vitamins and minerals. Parmeriee stressed in order to stay at the desired weight, a person must remain on the “lifetime nutrition program” which is adapted after the ideal weight is achieved. Other diet replacements are available through mail-order houses, however, complete information can be obtained only if the items are purchased. Gadgets “Gadgets” are also available through mail-order houses and range from “earclips” to waist wraps. These devices are publicized as away to lose weight without drugs and are merely another way for a weight conscious person to occupy himself with something besides eating. The gadgets, like supplements, are accompanied by a reduced calorie diet and there is no evidence as to which results in the weight loss, the gadget or the low calorie diet. Understandably weight concious people searching for a uick, easy way to lose weight an be totally confused by the variety of products on the market. After examining available products and programs, evidence shows in order for the various programs to be successful, dieters must fallow the program directions exactly, be willing to remain on the program or develop new eating habits and pay good money for the chosen product or program. Aiding him are his best friends, Dick and Linda Christie, played by Dale Regnier, Hobart and Kristine M. Griffiths, Zionsville.
