Summer

Coming of fall will close swimming season

With fall rapidly approaching, the swimming season in the Lakeland commuiutwns coming to a close. Three public swimming beaches in the area provide local swimmers clean beaches and lifeguards for the remaining warmer days. With the change in seasons, it may be a good time to evaluate the benefits of swimming. Recreational swimming provides unlimited opportunities for fun and enjoyment in the water. A skilled swimmer can begin to master other water sports such as surfing, water skiing ,and scuba diving. The Lakeland community is especially adapted for the active swimmer with its many lakes. Lakeland swimmers can choose to swim at Hoys Landing at the east end of Henry Street in Syracuse; Waubee Lakeside Park near Milford; and the Syracuse Lakeside Park, two blocks from downtown Syracuse. One form of swimming which is beginning to catch on nationwide is swimming for fitness. All over

'South Pacific' enjoyable

By WHITNEY SPURGEON And THOMAS SPURGEON Entertainment at a calm, enjoyable pace is provided by the current Enchanted Hills Playhouse production of “South Pacific." Although the play lacks the magic of the 1980 barn theatre production of the same musical, this year’s version has a talented and versatile cast and is good theatre for all ages. “South Pacific," with music by Richard Rodgers, lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II and book by Hammerstein and Joshua Logan, is based on one of the James Michener’s novelettes about the effect of World War II on the South Pacific islands As Ensign Nellie Forbush, the Navy nurse from Arkansas. Myrona DeLaney combines stage presence and a beautiful singing voice m her accurate portrayal of a difficult part Although her exhuberance appears a bit overdone at times, her performance is an admirable one French planter Emile de Beque is played quite adequately by Bruce Paulsen, a keystone in this summer’s EHP company.’ and both his acting and singing complement that of Miss DeLaney. The subtle role of Marine Lt. Joseph Cable is handled quite well by Mark Willis, and Lynn Perry, playing Liat, the native girl with whom Cable becomes involved, shows promising acting and binging talent Michele Bucher, playing Liat's mother. Bloody Mary, does an admirable job. too. but falls into the occasional trap of overacting as she portrays this relentless souvenir saleswoman of the South Seas But surely the most spectacular performance of th? show is that given by David Harris, as Luther Billis He keeps the

the nation, physical fitness is becoming more and more important. The major benefit swimming provides in exercising is that it does not place any added pressure on one part of the body. Running, for example, could lead to foot, ankle, and knee problems. The weightlessness of swimming makes it the choice for recuperating athletes. Ln the Lakeland area, a new class offered by Wawasee High School's Adult education program provides access to the oiympic-size pool at the high school. For 10 weeks, noninstructional lap swimming is provided from 6:30-7:30 a.m. Called the “Early Bird Swim,” the program is excellent for those interested in swimming for fitness. Wawasee girls* swimming coach, Cindy Peterson, is an advocate of swimming as a form of exercise. She said swimming is especially helpful for the cardiovascular system. Just like any other form of exercise, it is important to start out with a slow

audience laughing when he sings, when he dances, and when he just stands still, and he does it in such away that he does not upstage the other players or distort the focus of the action from them This is a tough assignment and Harris handles it well. Persons cast m other supporting roles do a fine job, and the male chorus needs a special bit of applause for its solid and amusing support of the other players. Good male voices are hard to come by, and this type of talent is an EHP plus this year. The orchestra provides a perfect balance to the show’s mood, never too loud, never too soft — and once again reflecting the wisdom of its relocation backstage at the beginning of this season The simple set and simple lighting are most effective in setting the mood and atmosphere of the beautiful eoral atolls where the action takes place. Although the show lags a bit at times (the script provides for a first act of more than an hour's length, so moving right along is important >, Artistic Director Jeffrey Keep has produced a "South Pacific" that looks good and sounds good, and should leave any audience satisfied "South Pacific” continues this week at 8 tonight through Friday, 8:30 Saturday and 7:30 p.m. Sunday. Final show of the season at the barn theater east of Wawasee will be William Shakespeare’s “Twelfth Night,” which opens a one-week run next week • • • Editor's note: Subbing for regular M-J reviewer Bill Spurgeon this week are two of his sons, Whitney Spurgeon and Thomas Spurgeon. Although both are in their ‘teens, they have nearly 20 years theatre experience between them.

pare “It is just like running, you have to start out slow,” she said. The free-style is the best way to swim and gain the most benefits physically, she added. Other strokes, such as the back and breast stroke, are “rest” strokes and enables the swimmer to better handle their swimming pace. “Anybody, with any ability at all, will benefit,” she said. It is important, though, to set a realistic goal to reach for and training with someone else also helps, said Peterson. Activity has been proven to curb appetite and she said swimming is a good way to lose weight. “It is just fantastic for weight reduction.” she said. If interested in the “Early Bird Swim” program, contact the Vocational Education office before August 30.

The exhibition in Cincinnati will mark the only time the armour will appear in the United States. It is the first time an exhibition has been wholly lent by the 900-year-oid Tower of London.

Cincinnati Art Museum to display London treasures

Preparations for a “royal” visit are underway at the Cincinnati Art Museum as carpenters and paint crews transform an entire series of galleries into castle walls and forests of old England to display the magnificent arms and armour, some of which belonged to British kings, in the only United States showing of Treasures from the Tower of London. October 9. 1982 through January 9.1983 Tickets for specific dates and time slots are already available by writing to the Cincinnati Art Museum. Eden Park, Cincinnati.

It is now the only great collection of armour in the world still housed in its own ancient armoury. Juicy lemons Store whole lemons in a tightly sealed jar of water in the refrigerator. They will yield much more juice than when they were first purchased. Rust-free Stop a partially used steel wool soap pad from rusting by wrapping it very tightly in aluminum foil and stashing it in the freezer No shrink When baking apples, remove a horizontal slice of peel from around the middle to prevent shrinking while baking.

Dewart Lake has charm

A prominent ridge juts upward along the rock-strewn northeastern shore of Dewart Lake offering a panoramic view of Kosciusko County’s fifth largest, and perhaps most serene, natural lake. From atop this ridge, the scene across extensive stands of cattail marsh and gently rippling waves, against a backdrop of autumn orange sunset, reveals this quiet charm possessed by hundreds of natural lakes throughout northern Indiana. While local residents and visitors enjoy Dewart Lake's picturesque quality, many fishermen also enjoy the relaxing fun of a successful fishing trip on its clear, fish-filled waters. Bluegills are the favorite among Dewart Lake fishermen. Abundant bluegills, many up to eight inches long, provide little disappointment to those who seek a day's catch for a tasty evening fish fry. For the really lucky ones, an occasional nine or 10 inch bluegill adds an extra bonus. For good bluegill fishing, try the lake’s northeast corner along scattered beds of milfoil plants. Crappies, too, congregate in the northeast corner, although slightly deeper and in more open areas, than bluegills. Most Roast wrap Wrap a roast in a double thickness of foil or 10 or more layers of newspaper to keep it hot for up to an hour. Food can be transported this way too. Defreeze To defrost bread loaves, place loaf in a clean, brown paper bag and put in 325 degree oven for five minutes to thaw completely. Clean cutter To clean blades or cutter on your electric can opener, run a paper towel through the cutting board.

Dewart Lake crappies are eight inches long but some up to 12 inches long are present. Dewart Lake supports an excellent yellow perch population. Many are in the eight to 10 inch range, while several are over a foot long and weigh up to a pound apiece. Unlike bluegills and crappies, Dewart's perch gather more along sandy, rocky contours in the open areas of the lake. The 10-15 foot contours projecting around the central island, as well as dropoffs along the north shore, offer more dense concentrations of perch. An occasional northern pike can be found, among the schools of perch, near the western slope of the central island. Unlike some other area lakes, Dewart Lake does not contain a large rough fish population, although gar are fairly comm®. Lake Chubsucker is the major nongame forage fish. For several years, DNR biologists and other fishermen have thought Dewart Lake could provide good walleye fishing, if only an experimental walleye stocking could be made. Lots of room, lots of rocky areas, and lots of little perch to eat, blend together to make Dewart Lake well suited for walleyes. Because of its large size, good fish habitat, ample cover and food, Dewart Lake was placed on a DNR list of lakes to be stocked with walleye as long ago as 1976. Recent advancements in Indiana's walleye program led to a

Mock-N-Mobel at Wagon Wheel Continuing in the tradition of the finest in American musical theatre, Wagon Wheel Playhouse presents as it’s fifth production in their 1982 season, the Indiana premier of “Mack-N-Mabel,” running from August 11 through 22. The book was written by Michael Stewart and<the music for the show was written by Jerry Herman. In the true to life story, Mack is the legendary film director, Mack Sennett. and Mabel is his star, Mabel Normand. Together they had America rolling in the aisles during the poineering days of silent movies. Keystone Kops, the Sennett Bathing Beauties, the banana peels and other pie-in-the-face fun of the golden age are blended together in this musical. Brendan Williams stars as the silent film pioneer. He played previously in “Tintypes” and “1776.” Stevie Rivers stars opposite him with Tom Roland playing the older more reflective Mack. Ticket information is available by calling the box office.
