Fall trials at Tri-County
Bright and early August 28,250 dogs and their handlers from all over the US and Canada will converge on Tri-Cotmty Fish and Wildlife Area near North Webster for the annual Michiana Retriever Club Fall Trial, one of the major field trials in the fourstate area. Field trials are competitions for any breed of retriever to test their trained and natural abilities on land and water. The sport had its origins in Scotland and England and was imported to these shores in the early 1900 s. Now carefully controlled by the American Kennel Club, field trials are held in all parts of this country and Canada. A trial consists of four stakes of graduated difficulty: derby, qualifying, open and amateur, each stake having as many as 65 entrants competing for four placements. Two judges, men and women selected for their experience in dog training and handling, set up retrieving tests in a variety of field and lake conditions. A land test may have as many as three birds thrown for the dog to mark and remember in rough, heavy cover. Dog and handler come to a given line with the dog off lead and completely under control At a given signal, birds are thrown, one at a time, for the dog to watch and remember, a simulation of hunting. When the judge so indicates, the handler releases the dog with a verbal command and the dog retrieves the birds in order, delivering each gently to hand, in no way damaging the game. Dogs are judged on their ability and style. The derby stake is for dogs two years of age and under, and tests only the ability to retrieve. The other three levels of competition add “handling." Dogs come to the line and see only an empty field or expanse of swamp in

which a bird has been planted 75 to 100 yards out. The handler lines the dog the direction be wants him to run and sends him with a command. If the animal deviates from the proper line, the handler gives a sharp blow on a whistle and the dog must immediately sit and watch his handler who will give him a new direction to move using a hand signal. The dog will be “handled" to the bird. The dogs taking the straightest lines and responding sharply to directions will be among the contenders. Winning dogs accumulate points, 15 points making a Field Champion and 15 an Amateur Field Champion in the record books of the AKC. The amateur champion will have won his points being handled in competition only by an amateur as opposed to dogs competing with a professional handler. It often takes dogs years to attain a championship because of the intense competition. Anyone interested in being among the gallery at a field trial should be aware there are certain rules of etiquette to be followed. Spectators must remain as quiet as possible because dogs can easily be distracted at crucial moments. The gallery must remain in areas designated by the marshal of each stake. Catalogs are available at Field Trial Headquarters at Tri-County the days of the trial. Wawasee Football Team To Benefit Members of the Wawasee High School football team will be donating their considerable energies to work at the trial and in return will receive a SSOO donation to the athletic fund from the Michiana Retriever Club.
