Over some parts of our body it’s not very deep at all, just l/50th of an inch over our eyelids. The average person has about 18 square feet of skin weighing about six pounds. Though a thick skin is an excellent defense against sunburn, prolonged exposure to the sun may cause a number of problems. These include premature aging, a dry, coarse and leathery surface, pigmentary changes and wrinkling. Years of exposure to the sun can lead to a condition called solar keratosis, which in some cases can become malignant if untreated. This is particularly true for lightskinned people and those with red hair. Outdoor workers—fishermen, farmers —are often exposed to too much sun. Symptoms include irregular red, scaly patches, usually on the back of the hands or on the neck or face. Anyone with such symptoms should see a doctor. If not treated, sqlar keratosis may lead to skin cancer, the most common form of cancer among people. Doctors can make this diagnosis and they sometimes use a prescription medication—available i in cream or solution—made by Hoffmann-La Roche Inc. It is often applied to the skin with good results. Only a doctor can prescribe proper treatment. If you suspect you have the condition, discuss the possibility with your doctor. Moreover, when you consider that a piece of skin the size of a quarter contains a yard of blood vessels, four yards of nerves, 25 nerve ends, 100 sweat glands and more than three million cells, it’s easier to realize how important it is to protect our skin.
