Boat-in Worship — a beautiful service

Living in the lakes area of Syracuse-Wawasee has many benefits and one of those may be the beautiful service held each Sunday at 8:30 am., known as Boat-in Worship. Boat-in Worship actually began in 1969 at Waco Beach, in conjunction with a youth group program there. The group had a coffee house at Waco and began the idea of Sunday morning worship service outside. A few weeks later a couple of boats came to the shore at Waco for the service and it moved to the pier. In 1970 four area churches. sponsoring the program: Wawasee Lakeside Chapel; Syracuse Church of the Brethren; Calvary United Methodist; and the Saint Andrew’s United Methodist Church, got permission to hold services at Oakwood Park.

Twelve services were scheduled for this season at the piers at Oakwood Park and everyone is welcome. The service is held on a boat with speakers mounted on it, shown above in the center of the photo. < Photo by Sharon Stockman ) 1 mB WORSHIP IN THE SUN — A group gather on the shore at Oakwood Park to enjoy the morning boat-in worship service heard from a boat near the pier. Coffee is provided for worshipers near the hotel and many casually attired people share the early inspiration each Sunday.

Services began in a boat near the Oakwood Piers and at times as many as 30 boats came to the service and a few people gathered on shore. Current attendance has grown to as many as 100 boats and a large congregation in the hotel yard. Five churches of the SyracuseWawasee Ministerial Association now sponsor the program, plan services and provide needed financial support. They are: Syracuse Church of the Brethren; Calvary United Methodist Church; Saint Andrew’s United Methodist Church; Syracuse Church of God; and Wawasee Lakeside Chapel. Rev. Harlan Steffen of Wawasee Lakeside Chapel, the only remaining minister of the originators of the program, coordinates the special music each week. Members of various

churches pass out bulletins and free coffee from a raft on the lake and on the shore each Sunday morning. In the 13 years Boat-in Worship has been in existence it has become a church away from home for some summer residents and providesnot only a worship service for many year-round and part-time residents, but a fellowship period as well. Everyone is invited to attend this service, which will continue each Sunday morning through September 5, at 8:30 to 9 a.m. People are invited to come by boat or enjoy the service from the shore near Oakwood Park Hotel and attire of your choice is encouraged Many people who have attended these services have found it to be a very inspiring experience

Speaking Words of Wisdom— Born to lose

By G. EDWARD GEANS Minister “A loser is a wood pecker in a petrified forest.”, “A loser is a man who plays hide-and-seek and nobody goes to look for him.” “The Born Loser” is a comic strip featured in most major newspapers. It reflects the thinking of the time. We grow up convinced that losing or winning at life is a matter of chance or Kind fate. The difference between winning and losing, however, is much more a matter of choice than we want to admit. Winning or losing in life is not determined by what happens to us as much as by how we react to what happens to us. Deciding to react to life in a certain way can easily become such a strong pattern that it will appear as though things happen as a part of destiny, as if we have no control over our lot in life. The “loser” begins by deciding to believe or react negatively to life. Soon a pattern of negative attitudes and behavior becomes a part of the “loser’s” unconscious life style. On the other hand, the “winner” begins by deciding to react to life in positive ways. With successive decisions, a built-in pattern of positive living develops which becomes second nature with the “winner.” Here are some of the qualities of a winning approach to life: First, a winning person is genuine. He is not a phony and does not put on an artificial pretense. He believes in himself. He is not a carbon copy of someone else. He is authentically positive about his own selfhood. Second, a winning person is in control. He makes his own decisions and accepts personal responsibility for his own life. He does not follow the crowd He makes autonomous decisions about the situations of life. Third, a winning person is sensitive. The world is hungering for compassion, kindness and personal concern. In an increasingly automated society, we need real people who can express real feelings

Fourth, a winning person is opportunity-oriented. Most people are problem-oriented. They can only see obstacles. They can only see how it will not work. The winning person sees the obstacles, but sees them as opportunities for challenge, growth and ultimate success. Fifth, a winning person is future-oriented. He does not fight battles that no longer exist. He does not blame his past for his present. He does not live in the past, in terms of either its successes or failures. He presses on to the future. A real winner is not the person who always has the greatest score, or gets to the top first, or has the most money in the bank. Winning is an attitude and sometimes even in losing, the “born winner” wins. The Mountains Are Monuments To The Lord's Creation all the visible examples of the wonder of creation, the most awesome are the mountains; appearing in a wide variety of form and elevation: the glacier-carved horns of the Alps, the stately grandeur of the Rockies, the jagged pinnacles of the Tetons, the saw-toothed escarpment of the Sierra Nevada, the towering Himalayas and the rolling, tree-covered folds of the Appalachians; among many others. They channel our life-giving water supply, modify our climate to provide the right conditions for every need, and offer many recreational opportunities. Mountains have played a vital role throughout history, and some of the most famous Biblical episodes were enacted on their slopes or summits. Whatever your creed, you need look no farther to appreciate God’s handiwork than these breath-taking high points of the earth’s horizon.
