Storybook finish in Tournament of Knights .

By GARY LEWIS It had all the ingredients of a storybook finish. An unheralded, hometown resident and last-minute entrant, Mike Kissinger, won the 1982 Mermaid Festival’s Tournament of Knights competition Saturday morning at the North Webster Junior High School. Kissinger compiled 70 points in nine different events to win Sir Lancelot du Lac and a ride in the Mermaid Festival's parade. Competing against six all-state and seven all-conference performers. Kissinger felt his chances, by his own admission, were slim to win the tournament. A 1979 graduate of Wawasee High School, Kissinger participated in only two varsity sports — basketball for four years and track his senior year. He was the 11th man on a 12-man basketball team and almost ended his athletic career when he shattered his wrist in a backward running race during class competition his senior year at WHS. With a cheering crowd behind him. the North Webster native won both games of the one-on-one basketball competition. He needed eight points to win the tournament and by winning both games got 10. Asked if he would call himself an unlikely winner, he replied “definitely ... I'm too old, not good at nothing. 1 always like to sit up on the bank vault uptown to watch the parade. I'm glad to be in that (the parade) now." At 21, Kissinger feared his years would be a hindrance in competing against the mostly 18 and 19-year-old field. Bobi Schopf, executive director of the International Palace of Sports, accepted his application at the last minute Thursday evening. “He was worried about being too old," she said. Actually, there is no age requirement to enter the tournament. Bobi Schopf said the only requirement is to be a high school graduate and to be sponsored by a not-for-profit organization. Kissinger’s reaction to his firstplace finish was as low-key as his own self-appraisal of his chances towin: “It’s no big deal.”

For his sponsor, the Wawasee High School girls' basketball team, and head coach Dale Brannock, it was a big deal Kissinger's win amounted to SSOO for the basketball squad. This award will more than double the S3OO budget Brannock usually gets to work with. Eve Payne, president of the WHS Booster Club, asked a friend of Kissinger's to enter the tournament as the basketball squad's entrant. When he declined to enter, Kissinger' decided he would enter the competition. “I didn’t really think about winning it when 1 entered. " he said. Finishing second in the tournament was Grace College athlete Kent Denlinger He was three-points behind Kissinger
