He had been badly abused and mistreated and was about to be shot when Mrs. Stucko rescued him. it was more than two months before he would allow anyone to come near or touch him or even come into the house. It took plenty of loving care and understanding to turn him into the healthy, gentel. trusting creature he is todav.

felines should be brushed with the grain. Use short, quick strokes. Cats catch cold rather easily and should have protective shots for distemper, etc A susseptibility to colds is one reason they will naturally avoid getting wet. If you feel kitty must have a bath use cornstarch Rub it in and brush it out If it must be a soap and water bath it's best to let a veterinarian handle the situation if at all possible — Never try to clean the inside of a cat's ears If you see a dark, waxy substance m the ears it’s probably ear mites Medication can be purchased from your veterinanlan to get nd of the mites The application of a few drops each week will keep the cat’s ears clear, healthy and pain free It's not necessary to brush a cat’s teeth If you do the poor animal will think you’ve overdosed on catnip Dry. crunchy food and a proper diet will take care of any problems It’s hard on a cat to be outdoors

during very cold weather. Any food or water they might find will be frozen and unusable. Some kind of suitable shelter should be provided to keep them dry and protected. A cat can be taught good manners. Usually a firm, “No” is enough, along with shooing them away from the area of undesirable behaviour. Be consistant. A rolled up. rattling newspaper will also get their attention — maybe. Remember, cats are very independent critters. When your cat isn’t feeling well it will let you know. Watch for: listlessness, a drooping tail, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, dull-looking eyes or fur or a discharge from the eyes or nose. A cat that is upset (physically or emotionally) may suddenly become unhousebroken. It may be a sign of bladder infection or kitty just may need a bit more attention or reassurance for some reason Cats are clean and so much licking and washing may cause fur balls The problem is easily corrected Just rub some good old fashioned petroleum jelly (not carbolated) on top of the cats paws or on its chin. It will promptly lick the jelly off providing lubrication for the digestive tract Sometimes, in difficult cases, medication should be obtained from your veterinarian. A kitten should receive its first protective innoculations at about four weeks of age. The first shots will be for distemper, followed by protection against feline respiratory diseases and rabies Booster shots should be a yearly ritual. A cat's normal temperature is about 101 5 degrees Apply a thin coating of petroleum jelly to a rectal thermometer and insert it about an inch or two into the cat’s rectum If you do decide to take your cat s temperature this reporter can only say, “Lots of luck'” The only cat we’ve ever had that cooperated with this procedure was a dead one Os course our veterinarian is a pro and can accomplish the task with no problems. Like all pets, cats should be wormed now and again by a veterinarian Felines can pick up internal parasites from fleas, catching mice and other wild game or associating with infected cats and dogs

When bringing a new cat or kitten into the family be considerate of your other pets. While everyone is getting acquainted and accustomed to each other, your older pets may need some extra attention and reassurance. The new kitten will need time to adjust to strange surrounding and to be accepted by all members of the household. A cat can produce its first litter of kittens at about six months of age Please don’t neglect having vour kitty spayed or neutered. Dumping animals along a country road or in front of a school is cruel, cowardly and a dangerous thing to do. In most cases the poor creatures starve to death or are hit by a car. They may become sick and diseased or injured. Those unwanted kittens or puppies can easily be prevented by a trip to the veterinarian. If you ever find a stray, sick or injured animal please call the humane shelter. If you have decided to adopt a cat let us know We’re always delighted to share happy endings. -NW3 on dean's list at Manchester Three area students are among those on the dean's list of honor students for the spring term at Manchester College The dean’s list is composed of those completing 12 semester hours or more and whose grades are in the upper 10 per cent of their respective classes Leesburg honor students are: Michael Calobrace. freshman pre-med major; and Christine Spencer, sophomore accounting major Warsaw is the home of Michele Zurakowski. senior speech and drama major Manchester College is a fouryear liberal arts college affiliated with the Church of

Understanding shoes

While many shoe manufacturers and retailers seem reluctant to discuss comfort when promoting their products, due to a supposed negative connotation in regards to fashion, surveys consistently show that comfort holds top priority with over four-fifths of American shoe buyers Shoe buyers are interested in comfort in a specific rather than general sense. If the shoe has a cushion insole, the customer wants to feel it. If the uppers are soft and supple, the would-be buyer will want to touch the material
