'Cuties' have been a tradition since 1949

Since 1949. many people have donated backstage time for the “Cutie Queen’ contest to make it a successful tradition at the annual Mermaid Festival. "Cutie King' has also been a tradition, however, the first king. Larry Teghtmeyer. was not elected until a year after the queen in 1950 Charles and Susanne Parker, new festival chairman and festival secretary respectively, worked extremely hard with many others preparing for this year's kiddie parade and pageant The kiddie parade judges perform their duty first in the evening of events and certainly have their work cut out for them They must decide on the top three entries in two categories: walking or pulled units and motor driven units This year, the parade judges responsible for these decisions were Mr and Mrs. Howard Kiser, Syracuse; Mr. and Mrs. Robert Long, Leesburg; Peg Lawrance. North Webster; and

Ginger Packer, also of North Webster After the parade, gazers were entertained by Max Shively, Leesburg, as they collected in the North Webster school gym awaiting the start of the pageant. Shively is the official musician for the 1982 pageants, including the “Queen of Lakes" contest. His talent was evident as he skillfully played many organ pieces and accompanied himself with the cornet After Shively's introduction, the children began their walks across the beautiful runway giving the pageant judges a chance to work. This year, Jeanette Keim of North Webster, Judy Marker and Vicki Price, both of Selma, had the difficult task of choosing the “ ‘cutiest . *’ Other hard workers in the cutie contest include: Rosy Mort, Alice Rinker. Lori Davis, Dixie Pryor, Ginger Packer, Peg Lawrance, Lynn Stalter, Cinda Culver, Susie Williams, Sandy Walgamuth, Phyliss Mullett and Mr. and Mrs. Steve Kiser.
