Summer's arrival brings changes to area churches
Summer has arrived in the Lakeland Community and many of the area’s ‘’snowbirds,” those residents who escape the burr of northern Indiana's winter, have returned from Florida and warmer climates to their summer homes and churches. Along with the snowbirds, pastors welcome the many visiting vacationers and returning summer lake residents whose bright and shiney faces cause many church attendance rasters to swell. Many area churches also notice an increase in church activities with a list that includes everything from softball games to ice cream socials. These opportunities provide fun and Christian fellowship for the young and old alike. The Boat-In Syracuse's “Boat-In” is probably one of the more unusual and increasingly popular forms of worship in the Lakeland Communities Held at Lake Wawasee’s Oakwood Park Peer, five churches belonging to the Syracuse Ministerial Association, conduct the services that bring over 100 boats together for early Sunday morning worship from 8:30 until 9 am Churches involved in the BoatIn services include: Wawasee Lakeside Chapel, Calvary United Methodist Church. Saint Andrew's United Methodist Church. Syracuse Church of God and the Syracuse Church of the Brethren The boat in services began Sunday.

Syracuse Masses at Saint Martin de Porres Catholic Church in Syracuse are at 6:30 p.m., Saturday’s Vigil Mass, and on Sunday at 7:15 a.m., 9:15 a.m. and 11:15 a.m. Dress is more casual at the early mass. Grace Lutheran Church notices an increase of attendance in the summer and Rev. Frank Barcus says, “Summer people have made a habit of coming here.” Dress is casual during summer here with some choosing to wear blue jeans. Recently the church’s youth had a “tent-out” which replaced the regularly scheduled service, taking place at the Bruce Grindle farm, located at 300E. Members of the youth group camped out and conducted the service as well as the music. Members of the church attended the service at the Grindles. Vacation Bible school runs July 12-17 from 9-11 am. Grace Lutheran supports the Boat-In service. Syracuse's Church of God participated with Syracuse's Church of the Brethren in a joint Vacation Bible School which ran recently. July is camp month and the regularly scheduled Wednesday program for youth is omitted during summer to encourage participation in the camps Enrollment goes up in youth activities and last Sunday was Children’s Day at the church Attendance just about balances out in the summer at Wawasee Heights Baptist Church with
some summer people coming and some members leaving on vacations. A camping day is planned at r- ystal Lake for the youth and several youth will be attending the Baptist Bible Conference at Clark’s Summit, Pa. Rev. Harold Barton has been at the Church of the Nazarene for about 14 years. He’s been working towards increasing attendance since he arrived and encourages lake and summer people to attend. The warmer weather brings a slight increase in activity and the church attempts to bring in more singing groups during this time. Vacation Bible School will be held in August this year Calvary United Methodist Church is one church that really notices an increase in summer attendance. The early service at 8:30 allows people to attend church before going to the lake or out-of-town. Dress for this early service is more casual. A special treat for summer included last Sunday's performance by the Sounds of Hope singing group Summer is also the time of the church's ice cream social Saint Andrew’s United Methodist Church welcomes back its snowbirds in the summer and finds it difficult to predict church attendance with many people leaving on vacations Sunday school attendance drops somewhat and the choir takes a vacation in the summer. Things at Zion Chapel United Brethren Church stay about the same in the summer as in the

winter according to Rev. Don Ross who says attendance may drop slightly in August due to vacations. The Bible Christian Church is very busy in the summer and Pastor Dean McFadden avoids taking his vacation until later in the year. Vacation Bible School is ran last week. The church has also started a special visitation program within the community. Members are visiting homes and inviting all to attend services and fellowship at the church. Wawasee Lakeside Chapel has a significant increase in summer attendance with many lake residents attending both the Boat-In service and regular morning worship. Vacation Bible

School will began on Monday for ages three through nine and will continue all week. The 10-14-year olds will go to Epworth Forest for church camp. Milford Rev. Paul Tinkel of Milford’s First Brethren Church says attendance is slightly up in June and down in vacation months of July and August. Because of the fire that recently burned some of the churches classroom area, Vacation Bible School will be held in August this year. Dress is more conservative here for the morning worship but not all wear suits and ties in the warm summer months. Sunday school is held one-half hour earlier in summer beginning at 9 a m. with

morning worship at 10 a.m. An ice cream social is planned for this month complete with homemade ice cream. Attendance at the Bethany Church of the Brethren begins to increase in the spring with church attendance reaching a summer high. There are special programs in the summer including the children’s youth camps at Camp Mack. Several youths will be attending the National Youth Conference at Estes Park, Colo., with around 3,000 other youths. Softball teams and special events keep members and visitors busy at Bethany all summer long. The Christian Church of Milford has an influx of people coming from Indianapolis and other cities who visit the lakes on the week ends and attend worship services in Milford. Many members also take vacations so that church attendance stays about the same as it was in winter. Dress tends to be conservative here but not all wear suits and ties. Summer activities planned include “Youthspiration,” a program that will feature youth coming from Ohio and Illinois for a special Christian youth conference. Milford Chapel changed its Wednesday service to 7:30. The first hour is now devoted to the
Speaking words of Wisdom — Look ahead — think ahead
By G. EDWARD GEANS Minister Watch where you are going. It could save you some trouble. Generally speaking, people who do not watch where they are going run into things. I know. It has happened to me. I ran into a police car one time while pulling a dump truck out of a parking place. I was looking in the review mirror, behind me Hie officer politely reminded me that after looking behind. 1 must then be careful to look ahead. Talk about embarrassment! Seriously, how ..many automobile accidents have been caused by drivers who have failed to watch where they were going? How many telephone poles have been toppled over through the years? Worse yet, how many lives have suffered injury or permanent damage because of a failure to both look ahead and think alertly? This little bit of wisdom applies in life as well. Looking ahead is

children and Vacation Bible School is planned this summer as well. The Milford United Church recently held a balloon launch to publicize its Vacation Bible School which ran last week. The closing program was on Friday. The church plans a picnic at Dean Cousins, School of Christian Missions at Epworth Forest, this Sunday, June 27, at 5:30. During June through August there will be Wednesday evening Bible study to replace the Tuesday morning study. Leesburg Leesburg's Grace Brethren Church recently held its Vacation Bible School with an awards program following. Summer programs will also include the trip by several youths and adults to the National Grace Brethren Conference in Palm Springs. Calif. North Webster The United Methodist Church of North Webster is planning two lake services, one on Lake Webster and the, other on one of the Barbee lakes. They support Syracuse’s Boat-In and Rev. Rex Lindemood says, "We UM's believe going to the lake is fine but you still come to church.” Dress is of course casual at lake worship services and more conservative at the church. an essential attitude for successful living. Constantly looking where you’ve been instead of watching where you are going can cause problems. You may soon start running into things; things like depression, self-pity, excessive guilt, and a host of other emotional and spiritual maladies. This month, Adeline Becht received her doctorate degree. The fact that she successfully completed her work at the age of 48 was not anything particularly noteworthy. It happens all the time. Worthy of note, however, was the fact that she lost both her sight and hearing as the result of about 20 years of drug and alcohol abuse which started in her pre-teen years. As she marched in procession with her fellow doctoral candidates, she was greeted by well-wishers who shook her hand and embraced her. Becht, whose diction is very clear despite her handicaps.

A special concert set for July 4th will feature singers Ron and Carolyn Patty. Lakeland Community Church of North Webster’s Rev. Roy Mikley says the church doesn’t plan too many extra summer actitivies because they are a small congregation. There will, however, be a summer program for the youth camping at Tippecanoe Baptist Camp. Summer means a time of change for the Rock Church which meets at the Turkey Creek Conservation Club. Rock Church is affiliated with Calvary Ministry International. There is no Sunday school and morning worship is at 10 a.m. with the Sunday evening worship at 7 p.m. Pastor Gary M. Tuttle isn’t surprised to see new faces in his congregation because there are always visitors present. Dress is very casual here with blue jeans not uncommon. Because the church must rent facilities some activities are limited. The youth will attend Camp Calvary at Angola this summer.

related that she prefers to look to the future. Ultimately, the key to successful living is to be found, not only in looking ahead, but also in looking above. The Apostle Paul wrote. “One thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and reaching forward to what lies ahead. I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus" (Phil. 3:13-14). We all have experiences in our past that we would like to completely clear from our minds. We all have failures and weaknesses that come back to haunt us. And we soon learn that we cannot always successfully deal with these things in our own strength. May we look ahead and look above. Our God is the God of a new start, of the sunrise, and of a new beginning. He specilizes in healing the past and building the future. Trust Him through faith and obedience to His word. Think ahead Look ahead It could save you a great deal of trouble, both new and in eternity!
