Julet J. Hoke A Retired Penn Controls Employee Mrs. Julet J. Hoke, 89, 812 S. >l4th St., Goshen, mother of Mrs. Rodney (Maxine) McCreary, Milford, died at 2:20 p.m. Saturday, June 5, in Goshen Hospital. She had been a patient for one day. She was bom on February 1, 1893, to William and Sarah (Grant) Evans in Owen County. She was first married to Gus Snooks in 1915. He died on January 23, 1936, and in 1952 she married Laurence Hoke, who died in 1955 Mrs Hoke retired in 1967 from Penn Controls and was a member of First Baptist Church. In addition to her daughter, survivors include two sons, Emerson Snooks. Colona. Mich., and Ivan Snooks, Goshen; six grandchildren; four stepgrand children. three greatgrandchildren; and eight stepgreat-grandchildren funeral services will be conducted at 1 pm. today Wed nesday) in Chambersville Christian Church. Spencer Rev Edwin Mercer will officiate and burial will be in Chambersville cemetery An earlier funeral service was held at 11 a m Tuesday. June 8. in the Yoder - Culp Funeral Home. Hazel Walker Governess At Soldiers' And Sailors' Children's Home Mrs. Hazel Walker, 91, r 2 Leesburg, died at 3 p.m. Saturday, June 5. in Miller’s Merry Manor. Warsaw. She had been ill for more than a year. She was bom on December 30, 1890, to Elisah and Mary Ann (Johns) Burris in Shirley. She married Henry Miller in 1920 He died in 1935 and she later married Owen Walker, who died in 1969 Mrs. Walker was a licensed practical nurse, a former governess at the Soldiers' and Sailors' Children's Home in Knightstown and a member of the First Christian Church. Warsaw. Survivors’ include one daughter, Mrs Charles <Ann> Richards. Oswego; one stepson. George Walker, California; two grandchildren, Bill Richards, Illinois; and Jeanne Roberts. Oswego. four stepgrandchildren; and one greatgrandchild Mrs Walker was the last of 13 children Funeral services were held at 10 a m Tuesday. Earl Lemna Veteran Os World War II Funeral services for Earl Lemna, 87, 451 South Elm St., Nappanee, will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, June 10, in the Wright-Yoder Funeral Home, Nappanee, and burial will be in the Leesburg cemetery. Lemna died of complications at 7:45 am. Tuesday,- June 8, in Elkhart Hospital. He had been a patient for nine days. , He was born on August 31,1894, in Danville. 111., to Lee William and Mary (Brenner) Lemna. Lemna was a retired employee of the former Uline Manufacturing Co., Nappanee, a member of the United Methodist Church, Nappanee, and a veteran of World War II Survivors include 10 nieces and 10 nephews He was preceded in death by one sister and four brothers. Rev. Donald Kime, associate pastor of the Nappanee United Methodist Church, will officiate and military graveside rites will be conducted by the Nappanee American Legion. Friends may call between 2-5 and 7-9 p.m Wednesday in the funeral home. John W. Darr Litethno Resident Os The Syracuse Area John W Darr, 91, a lifetime resident of the Syracuse area and a patient at Lakeland Loving Care Nursing Home. Milford, died at 9:15 a m Sunday. June 6. at the nursing home. He was bom in Elkhart County on August 25, 1890, to Albert and Alice (Witmer) Darr. On January 14. 1914, he married Stella Alwine. who died in 1917. He then married Bertha Hapner, who also preceded him in death On November 12, 1946. he married Edna Tom Brown, who survives and lives in Milford. Darr was a retired farmer and gardener and a member of Solomon Creek United Methodist Church, north of Syracuse. Survivors include one daughter. Mrs Miriam Mishler. Syracuse; two stepsons. Chester Brown, North Webster and Jack Brown. Livermore. Calif.; and three grandchildren. Funeral services were held at 1:30 pm Tuesday, June 8. in the Solomon Creek United Methodist Church Rev. He had been a patient for one day. He was bom on September 26, 1900, in LaGrange County to Clark F and Amanda (Mishler) Chiddister On September 25. 1926. he marned Caroline R Lung who survives. Chiddister, who moved to Papakeechie Lake three years ago from Goshen, retired in 1969 from Smith Auto Supply Co., after 27 years and formerly was employed by Perfect’s Wholesale Cash and Carry In addition to his wife, survivors include two sons. Jim R Chiddister. Tippecanoe Lake and Jerry L Chiddister, Fraser. Mich ; four grandchildren; four stepgrandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. One daughter. Joan, died in June 1960. She was born August 7,1930, at South Charlston, W. Va. Her father was Oran B. Chapman and her mother was Pearl (Lowers) Chapman. , Coming from West Virginia, she resided in the Syracuse area for 13 years. On December 6, 1947, she married Bernard H. Solina. who preceded her in death in 1973. She was a homemaker and a member of the Syracuse American Legion Auxiliary. Survivors include one daughter, Lisa Solina, and two sons,. Rod and Steve Solina, all of Syracuse; three grandchildren; two sisters, Barbara Nunn, South Charlston, W. Va., Alma Chandler, Spring Hill, W. Va.; three brothers, Oran Chapman. South Charlston. W. Va., Phillip Chapman, Cross Lanes. W. Va. and Morris Chapman, Sissonville. W Va. Services were held Wednesday, June 9, at 11 a m. at Harris Funeral Home, Syracuse, with Rev. David Strickler Track Driver ForM.E.T. David Strickler, 46, 1311 W. Franklin St., Elkhart, brother of Thomas Strickler, Syracuse, died at 2 p.m. Sunday, June 6, in Elkhart Hospital where he had been a patient for nine days. Strickler had been ill since January. He was bom on September 1, 1935, in Elkhart and on August 31, 1956, he t married the former Beverly JjCahell. She survives. He was a driver for ME T. and a member of the Augustana Lutheran Church. Additional survivors include a daughter. Mrs. Richard (Marla) Sharp, Elkhart; two sons, Lance Cpl. Scott Strickler, Charleston, S.C., and Kevin Strickler, at home; two grandchikiren; his S other. Noble Cable Television, Kendallville, has hired Cable Constructors. Iron Mountain. Mich., to do this work. According to one of the workers they have been in Syracuse since May and have run into several problems but everything has been worked out. Gary, was transported to Goshen Hospital by the EMS after she became ill at the Oakwood Hotel at3:l3p.m.on May 5. On May 5 at 9:34 p.m. the ambulance was dispatched to 210 Carroll Street, where Timothy D. Donat, 28.57057 West Lake Drive, Middlebury, had been injured getting out of a boat. The patient obtained his own transportation to the hospital At 1:30 a m. on May 6 the EMS transported Georiga Btfeter. 77. Apartment '62, Greenimus Apartments, Syracuse, to the Goshen Hospital. Leonard Kline, 35. r 3 box 647 Syracuse, came to the Syracuse Police Station, at 12:35 p.m. on May 6 to request treatment for an injury. The EMTs treated the injury and advised the patient to keep the cut clean. At 2:22 p.m. on June 8 the Syracuse EMS was called to the home of Gladys Morris, 74. r_2 box 71 Syracuse. She had fallen in her home. The EMS transported her to Goshen Hospital. Milford EMS The following emergency runs were made last week by the Milford Emergency Medical Service: June 3 — Transported a 19-year-old woman in labor from Maple Leaf to Kosciusko Community Hospital June 6 — A 61-year-old Milford woman was taken to Goshen Hospital suffering from chest pains June 8 — Transported an 81-year-old woman from Milford to Goshen with pnuemonia Births OUSLEY. Mrs Stanley briefly traced the 21 -year history of the center, then turned attention to the present and future of the center , Although located in Syracuse, the youth center senes North Webster and Milford also, and serves many adults as well as youth. Last year the Lakeland Youth Center served more than 1.000 children and almost 500 adults The activities include programs in almost every sport, in cheerleading, coin and art interest groups, drama. 4-H. The director was complimentary of the many adults who work with her in the activities All functions are supervised by adults, without 4 exception -Goal of the center is to have a safe, secure and morally upright. environment, where children can come with or without their parents, and where the parents can feel secure regarding the total well being of their children. The center is sponsored in part by the United Way. but secures funding from other sources also. Some activities dd require monies from participants, but Mrs. Stanley emphasized that no child is excluded from any event, program or benefit because of finances In athletics and other competitive activities the focus is learning fundamentals and fair play, not on being number one. Throughout her presentation Mrs. Stanley praised the cooperation of the Lakeland School administration and staff. School coaches assist and advise on sport fundamentals.
