Ida. jLk MEMORIAL DAY PROGRAM — Gray Mills, pastor of First United Methodist Church. Warsaw, was guest speaker for Kiwanis Club of La keto nd. North Webster on Memorial Day morning. May 31. In his address to the. local Kiwanians, Rev. Mills gave a history of Memorial Day. He explained that Egyptians honored their dead with pyramids, Israelites plants trees as their tribute. Mexico takes food and places it on the graves of their dead and Russians remembers those lost at Stalingrad by a special memorial. In the United States our national observance is conducted at Arlington cemetery on Memorial Day. It was pointed out that the United States Memorial Day was first observed in 1868 in the south to honor those who had lost their lives in the Civil War. Our national government established a uniform date for Memorial Day in 1971. but in some states there are variations from this. Today Memorial Day is observed not only for those who have lost their lives in military action, but for the goodness of the lives of all who have died. A.C.-Underwood, chairman of spiritual aims committee, led in the presentation of “A Litney for Memorial Day” and the quartet of Robert Miller. Chris Koher, George Switzer and Chester Smith sang "Battle Hymn Os The Republic," and "God Bless Our Native Land." Shown seated at the table are Underwood, Rev. Mills and Charles Taylor, accompanist for the quartet. Standing in back are Miller, Koher. Switzer and Smith.
