Wawasee's Warriors were victorious 7-2 over Bethany Christian m the baseball sec tional tournament opener held Monday, dun ng which they earned a third matchup with the North Wood Panthers Myron Dickerson is optimistic that the third time will be a charm for the Warriors, who have been defeated b\ North Wood twice this season , The Panthers defeated Fair field 5-3 m the second game played on the Goshen School diamond The Warnors will play against North Wood this Saturday at 12 30 pm following the GoshenJimtown game set for 10 a m The game promises to be close as Wawasee lost only 4-3 in 10 innings to the Panthers in their second meeting Dickerson is confident his team will be playing good ball and said the team is not conceding

TRACK AW ARD WINNERS — Members of the Wawasee High School boys* and girls' track teams were honored at an awards banquet Tuesday evening. May 25, at Wawasee High School. In addition to receiving certificates, chevrons, jackets and letters, these four students shown above received special honors. Standing in front are girls' track award winners Jill Patty, who received the most points award in field events: and Stacy Wall, who received the most valuable runner, most points in running events and the desire, determination and dedication award. Standing in back are boys' track award winners Kevin Marks, who received high point award and captain's star: and Line Perkins, who received the most valuable runner award and was named to the Northern Lakes Conference first team list in two events. Jeff Duncan received the game ball as most valuable player In the girls' league, the Sox defeated the Tigers 15-4 and the Expos blanked the Giants 16-0 in Sunday afternoon action. The Expos went on to defeat the Sox 9-2 for the championship in the final evening game. Heidi Beer was presented with the game ball for outstanding tournament contributions.
Athletic awards presented at Syracuse Junior High
The Syracuse Junior High coaches presented this year’s athletic awards in a program at the school on May 27. The coach
The girls' tournament was also the scene of the only triple play in recent league history. A line drive to the third baseman resulted in the initial out. She then threw to second base, in an unsuccessful attempt to double off the runner. The second baseman in turn reeled and threw to first base to pick off a base runner, accounting for the second out. The first baseman then completed the triple play by throwing to third base to catch the runner who had earlier narrowly missed being doubled off second

Each coach presented an award to the player in his sport who represented the best characteristics sought for in athletics, including effort, concentration and sportsmanship. Winners of the coach's awards were Ann Alford, volleyball; Becca Stiver, basketball; Stephanie Crow, gymnastics; Jeanine Gunn, track; Brad Traviola, football and wrestling; and David Kistler, basketball and track. Jeanine Gunn and Price Pounds were selected as Yellow Jackets of the Year by the coaching staff. Winners of the scholasticathletic awards in sixth grade were Stephanie Berkey and Josh Lantz. Seventh grade winners were Julie Schmahl and Tim Mangas. Winners in the eighth were Jeanine Gunn and Lance Lantz. These students maintained the highest grade point averages while participating in three sports. Special recognition was given to the junior high boys and girls track teams, which finished undefeated in dual meets. The sixth grade girls track and basketball teams and their coach, Joan Alford, were also recognized for undefeated seasons.
