ROCK CHURCH PROCLAIMS ; ISAIAH SI:3 • By Safah M. Tuttle "He gave me beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness: that we might be trees of righteousness, the planting of the Lord, that He might be glorified." At Rock Church we often sing this scripture song. Along with singing hymns and traditional songs we very often sing from (hml's Word. Isaiah 61:3 is one such song and its message is one that can reach down into your heart and bless you with the truth of God s goodness and mercy. The 61st chapter of Isaiah is " ' one that speaks of the coming of the Messiah. Verse 3 says "To appoint unto them that mourn in Zion, to give unto them beauty for ashes .. .**. Rock Church proclaims to you today that Jesus can and will give you beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mournin ’ and the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness. You might be wondering what this means — beauty — ashes etc. The figures here are drawn from the customs and traditions of that time. (Putting on sackcloth, sitting in ashes for afflicted or in gladness being crowned with garlands of wreaths > Today — because of Jesus — who He is and what He did we don’t have to be saddened with stains of sin but can exchange that for new life in Him. Jesus can take the ashes and change them, making beautiful any thing and every thing we give to Him. Oil was poured on guests (perfumed ointment* at joyous feasts and people used oil which "makes the face to shine" or a regular basis except in sickness and times of grief. Today Jesus will give you joy. the oil of joy to heal your grief. He’ll take your sadness. Joy can not be forced or pretended, not real joy and "the joy of the Lord is your strength." Praise instead of heaviness. When people learn to praise they find out for themselves the secret, which really isn’t a secret at all of how Jesus takes our heaviness away. We no longer have to be distressed when we begin to praise the Lord on all occasions in every thing. Bright-colored garments were indicative of thankfulness whereas sackcloth indicated despondency. restive days and good times brought forth I brightly colored clothes whereas troubled times found men in robes not regarding their appearance. Jesus Himself will cloth us with His righteousness and as we learn to make our life one of praise and thankfulness — our stress, heaviness, burdens of earthly life will be lifted and we will bring glory to our Heavenly Father. We can be strong as trees — trees of righteousness, when we are planted by the Lord and our lives will glorify Him. Rock Church invites you to grow in Jesus, exchange the ashes for His beauty and praise the Rock of our Salvation. (Meeting at Turkey Creek Conservation Club Sun. 9:30. 10:30 am.: Sun. & Wed. even. 7 p.m.)
