The Christian church: mainstreams of faith
"In my Father's house are many mansions’’ (John 14:2). These words spoken by Jesus on the welcome the disciples would find in heaven also can be used to describe the many branches of the Christian church on earth Many early branches of the church developed at or nearly at the same time in various regions The first major schism occurred in the fifth century when the Copts broke away followed by other separations. But even in the diversity of the church, Christianity flourished. During the Reformation, the seeds of further division were spread across the Atlantic to America. Each major denominational group numbers nearly a halfmillion members or more in the United States Some of these are independent churches, some families (the Methodists*, and some organizations formed by recent mergers (the United Church of Christ). Like the branches of a great tree, all spring forth from a single source, the advent of Jesus, whose life and sacrifice and resurrection provided a third of the people in the world with a creed The Branches The following is a list of the major churches in America and an approximate membership count Adventist — U.S. 14 million, two million world; Baptist — U.S 27 million. 31 million world; Christian Church (Disciples of Vhrist > 14 million, one and' three-quarter million world; Churches of Christ — U.S. 24 million, three million world; Church of Jesus Citrist of LatterDay Saints — U.S. two million, three million world; Church of Christ Scientist — Bylaws forbid the publication of membership

The first church building, started in 1857 by Phillip Gigler, was destroyed by lightning. At one point in the church’s history dissension broke out among members of the congregation. The resulting split brought about the founding of North Webster Church of the Brethren and North Winona Church of the Brethren. The church has had two women preachers. Mrs. Matti Vandeveer, an itinerant minister, served as pastor during 1895 and 1896 In 1901 Mrs Mary S. Rhubottom preached at the church, twice a month, for a

The Copts do not accept Christ's humanity, but call him totally divine The Roman Catholic Church traces its beginnings to Peter, leader of the apostles, and his heir, the pope, who heads a hierarchial organization that manages church affairs down to® the smallest parish The Eastern Orthodox branches away somewhere between the early Christian church and the organization of the Roman Catholic church. The protestant limb of the tree first grew out with Martin Luther "95 Theses Upon Indulgences" and his reformation act. Many of the protestant churches from there on out sprang up or separated at the same time or within a short period of one another But the first major branches of theprotestant churches were Anglican, later becoming Church . of England, from which" 1 Episcopal. United Church of Christ, and Methodist branched from.
